Erik Ingolf TvedtSecretary-General of DSNAME

Introducing DSNAME Foundation’s firstspring season 2017 is a new beginning

This introduction to the spring 2017 seasoncarries with it some mixed emotions. An erahas ended, but to you as a participant in ourevents or as a contributor, either by speak-ing or by financial contributions, everythingshould be as usual. We still plan to carry outour free meetings at the Engineering Asso-ciation meeting center, and the Foundationwill carry on its work to support studentsand post grads in the maritime field.

What is new then? The Danish Society for Naval Architectureand Marine Engineering (DSNAME) was created in July 1971 as an umbrella organi-sation for, at that time, four societies or or-ganisations all addressing maritimetechnical issues by arranging a number ofdifferent events. In reality, more or less thesame people took part in the planning, exe-cution and even participating in the eventsand this was “calling for coordination”.Some of the founding organisations havemerged, left the community or shut downcompletely, and by this coming January 1st,there will only be one left, which is“Søfartsteknisk Forening”.In order to achieve a simplification of theorganization and a reduction of cost, theboard of DSNAME on November 2nd decidedto merge DSNAME into the DSNAME Founda-tion. This decision was accepted by the DS-NAME Foundation board, and therefore ouractivities from now on will be in the nane ofthe DSNAME Foundation.

This also means that I personally have step-ped down as Secretary-General as of 2ndNovember, but I am continuing as Sec-GenEmeritus until the formalities of the mergerhas been finalised. That is also why I amwriting this introduction to the new 2017spring season. The planning group, now under the auspicesof the Foundation, has again managed toput together an inspiring series of eventsfor the spring season. Please refer to thesection of this folder where the program isdescribed in detail, and join us for ourevents and go home with new knowledge, inspiration, answers and new contacts. All events are executed in cooperation with our partner IDA Maritim, who sponsors the meeting venue and the refreshments. The planning group meets biannually, andconsists of the board of DSNAME Foundationand IDA Maritime, augmented by indepen-dent representatives from the whole of theBlue Denmark. All work for free in theirspare time, not only at the meetings, butalso taking on the task of actually arrangingthe events, and we are grateful for theircontribution. The group is open to other in-terested parties, subscribing to the valuesand ideas of DSNAME Foundation. If you are interested in participating in thework, please contact the secretariat.

Without support no societyWe would like to extend our appreciation toour contributors, the companies who sup-port our society financially – through ads inthis publication, on our website or throughthe company contribution – thanks! For many years a contribution to DSNAMEhas been a fixed amount of DKK 1,500 excl. VAT, but with declining revenues onconferences and ads in this publication, DSNAME has been forced to rely on yourcontribu-tions in order to be able to carry out our activities. The Board has

Page 4: Spring Leaflet

S p r i n g 2 0 1 7 D a n i s h S o c i e t y f o r N a v a l A r c h i t e c t u r e a n d M a r i n e E n g i n e e r i n g

therefore deemed it necessary to ask for increased contributions.Consequently, as of January 1st 2017, wewill introduce the terms Contributor andMain Contributor.

Contributors will be minor companies wherethe contribution will stay at todays’ level,i.e. DKK 1,500 excl. VAT.

Main Contributors will be companies with50 employees or more and the contributionwill be DKK 10,000 excl. VAT. The Main Con-tributors will be mentioned on our websiteand in this publication (off cause you mayopt-out of the mentioning). I hope we will have your understanding forthe increase, and will continue to supportour activities.

With the new organisational basis, and hopefully an enhanced financial basis, it isour commitment to spearhead communi-cation about development and researchwithin the field of Navel Architecture andMarine Engineering – from your feedback weknow that the events are well received, pro-fessionally performed and relevant. We ap-preciate your feedback and through ourwork we commit ourselves to continue deli-vering a first class program for the springseason!

Good speed to DSNAME FoundationI will leave this work, which has taken up adecent amount of hours for the five years I have had the honor of being Secretary-General of DSNAME, with a sense of pride forwhat we have achieved on a very limitedbudget, and I wish the people taking up thebaton in the Foundation good luck and goodspeed on the oceans to be crossed in thefuture.

NewsletterSign up for DSNAME’s newsletter at www.skibstekniskselskab.dk/nyhedsbrev toreceive the latest news and information onupcoming events. Events will also be announced at the web-page of IDA Maritim (The Maritime Societyof Denmark). Presentations from the various lectures will, pending the permission of the individualpresenters, also be available at DSNAME’swebsite in PDF format.

Registration and meeting venueParticipation in meetings of the DSNAME isusually free.Meetings are held at IDA's conference centeron Kalvebod Brygge 31-33, DK-1780 Køben-havn V, in collaboration with IDA Maritim. During the evening events refreshments(sandwiches and drinks) will be served cour-tesy of IDA Maritim, usually at 18:00.On account of refreshments and the size ofthe room, we kindly ask you to sign-up forthe individual arrangements throughwww.ida.dk

Spring Program 2016Monday 16 January from 1600 to 2000 hours - event no. 321141DIGITALISATIONDigitalisation has hit us - big time. And it will also hit us in the shipping industry. We will take youon a journey where we look at the overall trends with a focus on shipping. • What is the technology outlook for 2025? • What standards will arise on e.g. automation? Then we will dive into a number of specific cases • A look at the Efficiensea2 project and its potential impact on shipping • Then we will switch to another industry: the automotive industry where we will look at some

specific examples from Denmark with driverless transportation • Finally, we will close the evening with 3D printing - what is hype - and what is the practical rea-

lity and its potential – with focus on shipping

Monday 30 January from 1600 to 2000 hours – event no. 321142BALLAST WATERThe Ballast Water Convention enters into force in September 2017. Short sea operators as well asOwners operating worldwide are affected. This meeting will explain the Same Risk Area methodologyas an enabler for possible bilateral agreements. How to ensure compliance and enable continuedworldwide operation will be explained and different technical options and solutions will be presen-ted and discussed.

Monday 20 February from 1600 to 2000 hours – event no. 321143SAFER AND GREENER EQUIPMENT ON EU FLAGGED SHIPS – THE MARINE EQUIPMENT DIRECTIVE (2014/90/EU) This evening will present an introduction to, and an attempt to, provide some clarity of, a ratherunclear and complex subject – the new the Marine Equipment Directive (MED) 2014/90/EU - the‘wheel mark’ standard. While safety standards for marine equipment installed on board ships areset internationally, this European legislation has been established to ensure these requirements areapplied uniformly on board ships flying the flag of any European Union (EU) country. The significant changes to the Marine Equipment Directive will be presented, including which extraconditions will be imposed on the national authorities responsible for certifying equipment on shipsflying their flag when issuing, endorsing or renewing certificates, and what impacts this has for ma-nufacturers of marine equipment. Come learn about how the Directive improves safety at sea, prevents marine pollution, and ensuresinternational safety standards for equipment on EU ships are interpreted in the same way across theEU.

Monday 27 February from 1600 to 2000 hours - event no. 321144BATTERY POWERED FERRIESSeveral battery powered ferry projects have been introduced in recent years. Not only in Norway, but also in Denmark Ferries are completely powered by batteries planned and under construction. In addition hybrid solutions have been and will be implemented in the nearest future. Some ofthese projects will be presented at the meeting by relevant experts involved in the completions.

Monday 20 March from 1600 to 2000 hours – event no. 321145SHIPS AND OTHER METHODS FOR SURVEILLANCE OF THE ARCTIC REGIONSThe climate of the Arctic regions is changeable which thereby also applies to the interest in theArctic Regions. Due to the size of the country, Greenland is a very important factor, and consequ-ently, presence in the Arctic regions is important.Currently, the Danish Navy is building new tonnage, increasing activities within sea measurementsand holds a strategy for their presence.Simultaneously, research on other surveillance systems to perform part of the task is being carriedout. The Technical University of Denmark and the Danish Navy report on their strategies, equipment andresearch in the area.

Monday 27 March from 1600 to 2000 hours – event no. 321146THE HISTORY OF THE KAPPEL PROPELLER – AND THE FUTURE OF THE KAPPEL PROPELLERMore than 30 years ago, the development of the so-called Kappel propeller started. The originatorof this propeller, Jens Julius Kappel, has devoted a large part of his life to the project. Today thepropeller is produced by MAN Diesel & Turbo, which has bought the rights from Mr. Kappel. The story of this unique engineering work has now been written by the well-known author BrucePeter, who has written several books about ships and shipbuilding history. The book describes thedevelopment of the Kappel propeller, as told by the key people involved. Thanks to grants from DS-NAME Foundation, the book will be available to the participants of the meeting free of charge. At the meeting Jens Kappel, Bruce Peter, Poul Andersen from DTU Maritime and Jens Ring Nielsenfrom MAN Diesel & Turbo will give the complete history of this unique propeller development.

ATTENTION! Please check the Danish Society for Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering’s web-site regarding the final date of the events. Funds distribution 2016The Foundation’s distribution usually takesplace twice a year, in April and November. Here the Board of Directors consider inco-ming applications and processes for pos-sible support in cases based on ownoperations. In autumn 2016, the Founda-tion received three applications for finan-cial support, and out of these, the Boarddesired to support two applicants.

Danish Society for Naval Architectureand Marine Engineering Foundation wasfounded by Danish Society for Naval Archi-tecture and Marine Engineering on January6th 1994. The Foundation’s objective is todisseminate vessel’s technical knowledge, including providing support to individualswho are wishing to be trained in the ma-rine engineering discipline, and also to sci-entific researchers or other developmentswithin the marine engineering. In addi-tion, the foundation aims to provide sup-port for the society and other purposesrelated to shipbuilding and shipping.

The Foundation’s resources are providedfrom conference profits, returns of invest-ment and contributions, which are grantedfrom different sources. The Foundationwelcomes any applications for financial assistance for purposes falling under theFoundation’s act.

Honorary Award overview 2016The Foundation’s Honorary Award isawarded to students, who have madethemselves particularly deserved to receive the award for their work. This year the Honorary Award winnerwas not one, but four students. TheFoundation’s Board agreed that allfour students’ projects were excep-tionally good and all deserved theHonorary Award, as it was not fair to choose one over the other. Therefore, it was decided, that bothprojects should be honored. In the first award winning Bachelorproject, Michael Jacobsen and Kristian Hartmann Bruhn, Ship Officer Students at SIMAC, workedwith energy optimization on boardMV Sea Challenger, a Jack-up vessel

specially designed for installing offshore wind turbines. They had access to performance data from MV Sea Challenger though BlueINNO+ project WP 6 performanceand monitoring. They found that MV Sea Challenger during Jack up periods produce more powerthan the vessel could consume due to size of the generators. Thisdiscrepancy led them to think of alternatives. Inspired by the Electrical driven Ferry project on Aeroe they decided to investigatewhether retrofitting of batteriescould be a solution during jack up periods. The work was awarded with thegrade 12.

In the second award winning Masterthesis, Henrik Mikkelsen and Mads L.Steffensen, students at DTU Mecha-nical Engineering, defined on theirown initiative an ambitious projectwith the goal of testing the accuracyof full scale CFD simulations for theprediction of the performance ofship design. Their studies were performed abroad at DNV-GL in Oslo, Norway, and through this contact also attended sea trials in Japan. Their CFD simulationswere performed meticulously and involved large scale parallelsimulations of self-propulsion ofthe ship in both model and fullscale. The propeller was modelled

in full detail allowing it to rotaterelative to the ship hull. They carefully validated every aspect of the physical model and theresults clearly demonstrate thatthe CFD simulations of the actualship (full scale) are in betteragreement with the sea trials than the current state-of-the-art results obtained using towing tank experiments. Hence, their work has the potential of changingthe design procedure of ships, and therefore present a significant contribution to the maritime sector. The thesis received the highest grade, 12.
