Spring Conference Committee Report March 2016
Name of Committee: Northern Region
Committee Major Goals:
Meet bi-monthly to address common issues/needs of the Regional membership and complete
Regional assignments.
DPHN Representatives:
Directors of Public Health Nursing in the Northern Region
Cindy Watson, DPHN Executive Committee Representative for North
Summary of Activities/Updates:
DPHN-North met bi-monthly as scheduled. In addition to sharing information/resources and addressing
issues affecting and of interest to Northern jurisdictions, we began planning for the fall 2016 Conference,
scheduled at the Lake Natoma Inn in Folsom, with the theme Leadership and Change: the Future of Public
Health Nursing. In our October 2015 meeting, Michael Ungeheuer gave a presentation and led discussion
on CCS Redesign and Foster Care Legislation.
During each meeting, we also continued our work on our Strategic Plan - Priority Area 4 (Leadership) to
build DPHN membership with strong leadership. This included the following specific activities:
1) Drafted a letter to send to potential DPHN associate members describing the organization,
highlighting some of the benefits of membership, and encouragement to consider taking an active role as a
DPHN member. Letter shared with the EC for review in February, but postponed to review in March
meeting.
2) Identify mentors from each region to welcome and support new members – the group established that
regional representatives on EC will be the first mentor to new DPHNs. Agreed rather than having North
identify a second mentor in each region, that each region will have responsibility to identify additional
mentor(s) and a structure for mentoring new DPHNs in their region. North began featuring one county at
each meeting, becoming familiar with county characteristics and role of the DPHN (structure of
organization, where DPHN sits on org chart, assigned programs, areas of interest/expertise, etc.). This will
help identify appropriate mentors when new DPHNs come into the region, as they can be assigned
experienced mentors with similarities in size, demographics, programs, etc.
