Creating a Sensory-Friendly, Inclusive Classroom Description: Children with a number of diagnosed special needs, including Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, and Down syndrome – as well as
children who have experienced early trauma, those born prematurely and the highly gifted – are likely to have sensory processing challenges.
In early childhood classrooms, most will not (yet) have a diagnosis of Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), but It’s safe to say that nearly all
classrooms will include children whose sensory needs define a learning style and necessitate environmental accommodations. These children
would benefit from the expertise of an Occupational Therapist (OT), but all teachers can make their classrooms as accessible as possible to
students with SPD using strategies for the classroom that will benefit all children. This training will focus on low-tech environmental strate-
gies that will benefit all children and will increase the likelihood of success for children with different learning styles that include sensory, so-
cial and communication challenges.

Upcycle for Exploration in the Early Childhood Classroom Description: STEM is fun, and in ECE it is everywhere. Come play and discover ways to help foster your students’ play into learning that connects their
excitement to your goals. In this workshop participants will look at materials in a new way focusing on what their students can do with them much
more than what they are. We will then go into how to help the students add some rigor to their play so they can become early scientists and engi-
neers while still having a blast. Our time will be split into 3 main parts: how to look at materials in terms of their attributes and some functions for
which they can be used, how to pick and design “building projects” that connect student play to content, and how to steer students into investigation,
as opposed to just exploration.
Dates: Tuesday, April 13, 2016 Time: 6:00 p.m. —8:00 p.m. Location: RAFT (Resource Area for Teaching), 3827 Steele St #C, Denver, CO 80205 Cost: $0.00 Audience: All Trainers: Chris DeKay
Safe Sleep Description: Did you know that, according to new Colorado Child Care Reg-
ulations, all staff who care for infants in child care homes and centers
must be trained in Safe Sleep practices prior to working with infants? The
Colorado child care safe sleep licensing rules became effective in April
2015. These rules will reduce the risk of sleep related infant deaths across
the state. All staff who care for infants in child care homes and centers
must complete a Safe Sleep Training by December 31, 2015 and then on
an annual basis. Participants in this training will gain an understanding of
infant safe sleep best practices to better protect the children in their care.

The ‘E’ in STEM Description: We will demystify engineering by clarifying what it is and identify
ways engineering is already happening everyday in the classroom. Partici-
pants will learn how to broaden and deepen children’s learning, to inten-
tionally facilitate children’s investigation to promote the engineering mind-
set and skills in children through play and investigation. Participants will
play with materials and experience the power of provocations. They will
examine how to create a learning culture where mistakes and constraints
are a normal part of learning and the design process used by engineers to
solve problems.
