Outpost. Twenty Five Years.
It’s a milestone. Outpost was founded in March of 1988 when we started doing concerts around town at the KiMo, the Living Batch Bookstore, El Rey and other venues. The Outpost Performance Space, on Morningside, opened in the fall of 1989. Since then there have been more than 2000 performances in venues of all sizes, thousands of classes for youth and adults, hundreds of visual art exhibits, 8 years of New Mexico Jazz Festival offerings, a move to and subsequent purchase (12 years later) of the present Outpost Performance Space on Yale. It’s been a great run and we look forward to another exciting 25 years! As we move into this 25th year we’ll be doing a bunch of exciting and fun events to celebrate. On May 2, at Outpost, I will sit down with KUNM DJ and jazz scholar, Mark Weber (who was present at Outpost almost from the start, having moved to Albuquerque with his wife, Janet Simon in 1991) to talk about Outpost then, now and into the future. It should be fun and it will be filmed by the crew from AAlive who’ve done some great jazz shows on Public Access TV Channel 26 over the last year. Then on Friday, May 24 at the Albuquerque Museum, we’ll really kick it off with a Gala Fundraiser featuring a catered meal by Slate Street Cafe, a silent auction, and a fantastic concert by soul music and gospel legend Mavis Staples (with blues great, MacArthur “Genius” Award recipient, Corey Harris opening it up). Presenting Mavis Staples is a dream come true for me. I remember, in my early teen years, seeing breathtaking performances by the Staple Singers at Club 47 in Cambridge. And then when I founded Outpost, one of my earliest Outpost concerts (and still one of my all time favorite presenting experiences) was that of Pops Staples at the KiMo (along with Johnny Shines and John Hammond!). Now 24 years later, Mavis joins us for a great night at the Albuquerque Museum. There’ll be much more as we celebrate these 25 years. In the meantime, it’s a great Spring season coming up as we kick it off with a Member Only Concert on Sunday, February 17 by Ron Miles, Bill Frisell & Brian Blade (check it all out in these pages!) and another great Jazz Festival whose lineup will be announced in its entirety any day now. All of us here at Outpost thank all of you out there— audiences, members, funders, sponsors, artists, and so on— for supporting us in our efforts to do what we do for you. You ARE the Outpost Family. Here’s to another glorious 25 Outpost years!

Jazz Improvisation & Latin Music Classes for Youth are open to all young musicians
(instrumentalists & vocalists)— elementary through high school levels— who want to have
fun learning more about improvising and playing jazz & Latin music in a small ensemble.
Classes are taught by the Outpost team comprising saxophonist, Kanoa Kaluhiwa;
drummer, Sharon Eldridge; trumpeter, Paul Gonzales; and our most recent addition to
the teaching staff, trombonist & percussionist, César Bauvallet. All classes aim to build
positive attitudes, trust, teamwork, cooperation, confidence, compassion, and a sense
of humor—skills and values which will serve participants well beyond the workshop and
throughout their entire educations and lives. Fun will be had by all!
Monday and Tuesday afternoon Jazz Improvisation classes taught by Paul Gonzales, and
Sharon Eldridge focus on the rudiments of music and improvisation including rhythmic
training, scale work, form in music, and musical improvisation. Students are invited
to express themselves freely on their respective instruments as well as on percussion
instruments. The emphasis is on musical expression as an individual in a group setting.
EDUCATIONSpring 2013
the Outpost Jazz education Program is the centerpiece of Outpost’s educational offerings. founded in the Spring of 1996, with seed money provided by a concert the previous year by “arlen asher & friends,” the program now takes place year-round with over 30 weeks of classes, three instructors, and yearly scholarships offered to worthy students. Since its inception, approximately 2000 students have moved through the program.

Each teacher has a slightly different approach and our goal is to place together, students
of similar levels as well as to form a balanced ensemble in terms of instrumentation.
Advanced Classes (Wednesday) taught by Kanoa Kaluhiwa focus more specifically on
the jazz repertoire, covering music theory, ear training, solo development, song forms,
and various rhythm section approaches. The NEW Latin Music class (Tuesday Evening)
is taught by César Bauvallet. It is open to youth and adults. Participants must have at
least an intermediate knowledge and skill level (minor & major scales) and a willingness
to practice what they are learning outside of the class. The class will focus on learning to
understand and play Latin music and rhythms.

NPR, Village Voice, and many others. Incorporating the culture of his Indian ancestry with
myriad musical influences, he has created a truly groundbreaking artistic vision. Gamak

musical concepts. As he describes it, “I’m working with quarter-tones and melodic
ornamentation in ways that I have not before, especially with regard to composition. It’s
not a through-composed piece, but a template for improvisation, exploration.” Gamak

Pianist, Fred Sturm specializes in the piano
music of Latin America, with a special emphasis
on Heitor Villa-Lobos. He has performed
regularly at Outpost over the years and in the
Albuquerque area and beyond for the past three decades. He has recorded six CDs to date,
most recently Federico Ibarra, Music for Piano. For this concert, Sturm takes the audience to
Rio in the years just before 1920, when there was a vibrant popular musical tradition called
choro, which featured a mixture of European and African influences. At the center of that
tradition was pianist/composer Ernesto Nazareth, whose 150th birthday we celebrate this year.
He left a rich legacy of pieces he called Tangos Brasileiros, which captured the essence of the
choro style. This concert will feature several of Nazareth’s Tangos Brasileiros, as well as Darius

kaMaLini MukHERJi presented in partnership with Padmini
Kamalini Mukherji is one of the most
popular faces in the younger generation of
Rabindrasangeet singers. Rabindrasangeet,
also known as Tagore Songs, are songs
composed by Rabindranath Tagore, a Bengali
writer, composer and Renaissance man, who wrote more than 2,000 songs derived from
Indian classical music and traditional folk music sources. Mukherji’s smart, distinctive style
of singing, marked by a deep understanding of the lyrics and a clear diction, has been
widely praised. Trained in Bharatanatyam, an Indian classical dance form, she also holds a
degree in English Literature and is an actress who performs regularly for film, on television,
and on the stage. Mukherji has successfully instilled a fresh enthusiasm for Tagore songs in
the younger generation while at the same time endearing herself to traditional and learned
listeners. $20/$15 members & Students

that big bands are “nerdy” when in fact they can be “ultra cool.” It’s Asher Barreras, bass;

aaRon dixon:readings from My People Are Rising. a founder’s memoir of the Seattle Chapter of the black Panther Party
In an era of stark racial injustice, activist and
author Aaron Dixon dedicated his life to the revolution, founding the
Seattle chapter of the Black Panther Party in 1968 at age nineteen.
In his new memoir, he traces the course of his own radicalization
and that of a generation. Through his eyes, we witness the courage
and commitment of the young men and women who rose up in
rebellion, risking their lives in the name of freedom. My People Are
Rising is an unforgettable tale of their triumphs and tragedies, and
the enduring legacy of Black Power. Dr. Cornel West said “Aaron
Dixon is a courageous, compassionate and wise freedom fighter whose story of his pioneering
work in the Black Panther Party is powerful and poignant. Don’t miss it!”. Aaron Dixon and local
poets will read excerpts from the book. A Question and Answer session will follow. $5

Founder & Director, Tom Guralnick and

of Outpost’s 25th Anniversary Celebrations. Founded in 1988, Outpost was a dream of
saxophonist and composer Tom Guralnick to create an informally-respectful performance
space (similar to spaces he had performed in from Amsterdam to Los Angeles) where
audiences, performers, students, visual artists of all ages could come together to enjoy the
best in jazz, experimental music, international music, visual arts and more. 25 years later, in
a space all its own, Outpost continues to flourish. We’ll talk about the glorious past and the
dreams and visions for an exciting future. Tonight’s conversation will be filmed by the crew of
AAlive, a local Jazz television program. Q&A session will follow the conversation. Space will

What We are
Outpost has been a non-profit arts organization since 1988. In 1990, we moved to our
own place — the Outpost Performance Space — a unique and intimate, non-smoking,
non-alcohol, alternative performance venue.
Where We are
In the Summer of 2000, Outpost moved to 210 Yale SE just two blocks south of Central
in the heart of the University district. The Space is an elegant, nonprofit, no-nonsense,
community-based, performing arts center which we purchased in 2011.
What We do
We present a wide variety of music and more — over 100 shows a year plus classes and
educational programs — all kinds of jazz (dixie to bop to modern to the avant-garde);
folk, blues & roots music; experimental music; classical music; international music; kid’s
programs; poetry & spoken word; theater and performance art; puppets; visual arts
exhibits; and many other unique events. WE’RE PROUD to present and support the work
of local, as well as touring artists — recognized, as well as emerging artists.
How We do it
Outpost is a member-supported organization, also funded by grants (government &
foundation), donations, corporate sponsorships, and advertising, as well as by ticket
sales and countless hours of volunteer help. IT’S A TEAM EFFORT!
Why We do it
We do it because we love it. And because we believe that performers and audiences
deserve a place to meet and experience each other, up close, in a casual, but mutually
respectful environment.
