MYSTERY WRITING 101 This class is intended to give students a firm base in the genre of mystery writing. Principles of creative writing like character, setting, plot, and theme will be examined and practiced using the mystery genre as a lens. Ideas like suspense, tension, and narration essential to the genre will be heavily discussed. Finally, adding mystery to other genres like horror, science-fiction, or thriller will be practiced. Readings will range from the genres roots in Poe and Doyle to the mid-century craze of Agatha Christie and PD James, and into the modern day with writers like Stephen King and Janet Evanovich. Students will write every week and have several longer pieces to be workshopped as a part of class, which will supplement instructor feedback. Instructor: Daniel Arndt.
