Terry Lightheart who passed away in September 2016, left us 84 pieces from his personal collection. “Terry Lightheart was a businessman, collector and artist. His passion for art was practiced through painting. The donation to Artists for Kids was a perfect fit, aligning Terry’s beliefs in art, that art should be enjoyed by as many people as possible and used to inspire and excite emotions,” says Kiyokazu Godo, Managing Director, Lightheart Properties. “It was important for Terry that the community have the opportunity to see his collection,” says Yolande Martinello, Director of AFK. “We’re grateful for Terry’s generousity. His long-time support of AFK and our programs contributed to what we could offer during his lifetime, and will continue to do in the future.” Art School High, the Smith Foundation’s Summer exhibition to be curated by ECUAD’s Patrik Andersson, will feature works by Karin Bubaš, John Collins, Rodney Graham, Sco Livingstone, Ken Lum, Kyla Malle, Jean MacRae, Shannon Oksanen, Kathy Slade, Ron Terada, Neil Wedman and David Wisdom— all artists who have made significant work that reflect on the high school experience. “When asked to curate this exhibition, I took the opportunity to reflect on my own experience of going to high school in North Vancouver in the 1980s. For Art School High I have chosen artists from different generations who are all based in and around Vancouver who have made work over the years that explore and exploit different aspects of their high school experience. I chose the title based on the potential ways the three words could be re-arranged to make us re- think high school and art (High Art, Art High, Art School, School Art, etc.). Read backwards, the title simply reads High School Art,” says Patrik Andersson. The works proposed provoke questions about identity, adolescence, conformity and rebellion. They also probe the very nature of learning in diverse environments inside and outside the classroom and look at this through the lenses of high art and popular culture. At AFK we are pleased to announce a generous gift and the exhibition it inspires. Terry Lightheart who passed away in September 2016, left us 84 pieces from his personal collection.

“Terry Lightheart was a businessman, collector and artist. His passion for art was practiced through painting. Silence in Schools: Exhibition

Silence in Schools, March 29 – April 12, 2017 is a photographic art project revealing the stillness and silence in an environment generally known to be colourful, bustling and clamorous. “The images depict how these spaces and areas within a school feel once devoid of pupils, teachers, activity and sound,” says Luke Potter.

AFK News and Events

We thank our Artist-Patrons

Our unique artist- and teacher-led training is possible, thanks to our generous artist-patrons. We thank them for their commitment to the next generation of Canadian artists. For a complete list of our limited-edition prints, please visit our website.

We have been fortunate to receive the support of several organizations. These vital funds allow us to continue and expand the programs we offer, so more young people in our community have access to quality visual arts education and the creativity it inspires.

The Friends of the Ferry Building has generously supported our programs through a two-year commitment to Mentoring Emerging Young Artists for students in Grades 10 - 12. Funding three programs each year, the contribution has allowed us to bring students together with artists Brendan Tang for sculpture and Erin McSaveney for painting. In the spring, photographer Mike Wakefield will teach students fine art photography. An end-of-the-year exhibition will be held in June in the Ferry Building Gallery, so the community can see the skills and talent of our next generation of artists.

The contribution of Coast Capital Savings has allowed us to bring an artist to Mountainside Secondary. For three Wednesdays in February, Alexis Dodd of Steelwood Design shared her stories and skills with students. Through her focused and inspiring classes, they learned to create functional art, introducing young people to opportunities for careers when they finish school.

Through the Youth Initiatives Program with the City of North Vancouver, we are offering a Youth Teaching Assistant Workshop Primer. This program gives students in the senior grades insight and training into working with teachers and young people as a teaching assistant. Students who finish the program receive a certificate of completion from AFK and if applicable, a letter of reference. They can also apply to work in some of our upcoming programs. Watch for notification of future workshops.

Smith Foundation News

The Smith Foundation is proudly focused on projects that constitute our mission: fundraising to grow the Smith Endowment fund, the interest from which supports Artists for Kids and the Gordon Smith Gallery; offering a range of community programming; and mounting a significant summer exhibition. These projects individually and collectively contribute to the ongoing process of enriching culture on the North Shore.

As a Board, we provide creative ongoing stewardship to the Foundation. Last fall three new directors were welcomed: Patti Glass, Richard White, and Diane Robinson. They joined existing Board members: Paul Killeen (chair), Bill MacDonald, Greg Simmons, Tobin Robbins, Richard Savage, and Ed Tsumura. The Foundation office operates efficiently under the leadership of the Foundation General Manager, Gail Johnson, with creative support from Guest Curators and our membership.

We thank you for your ongoing support of our work to contribute to the creative and cultural endeavours of the North Shore.

Mark Your Calendars – 15th Annual Spring Luncheon, Sunday June 4, 2017

The Smith Foundation is once again proud to be presenting our popular and well-received musical events in the gallery.

Classics @ the Smith, sponsored by HomeCare West, is hosting a three-evening cycle of the six Bach Suites for Solo Cello with ‘cellists: Cristian Markos, Lee Duckles and Olivia Blander and two evenings with Marc Destrubé.

The BlueShore Financial sponsored Jazz @ the Smith kicked off with the Cory Weeds Trio, followed by evenings featuring the Jennifer Scott Trio and the Steve Kaldestad Trio, and Van Django. The season’s close will be held at BlueShore Financial’s flagship branch at 1250 Lonsdale and will feature the James Danderfer Trio with guest artists New York City drummer Quincy Davis and Canadian bass legend Neil Swainson!

All evenings begin with a gallery tour and refreshments in advance of the performance. For more information and performance dates, visit our website under Public Programs.

Last spring, our 14th annual Spring Luncheon at the Capilano Golf & Country Club raised a tidy $120,000 in support of Artists for Kids, the Gordon Smith Gallery and our community art education programming.

Our inaugural Grosvenor America’s sponsored fundraiser “1 Off the Wall” invited 15 collectors to each donate an original artwork – which were then auctioned at a by-invitation-only evening held at The Permanent on West Pender. The evening raised more than $115,000 and introduced the Smith Foundation to a whole new audience!

An intimate Friendraiser held at the home of Dr. Jeff & Mrs Kaity Stein, combined with our annual campaign resulted in an additional $25,000 in revenue.

To end what was already a great year, the Smith Foundation secured a new sustaining gift to be distributed each year for 10 years from an anonymous donor.

We are grateful for the support we receive from the community and welcome all who wish to contribute.

Growing the Endowment Community Programming

Our 15th Annual Spring Luncheon, informally dubbed “Gordon’s lunch” will take place at the Capilano Golf and Country Club on Sunday, June 4th, so please mark your calendars. This yearly celebration of art raises vital funds through live and silent auctions. A cherished event, it captures the spirit of Gordon Smith’s dedication to art education. We look forward to seeing you there.

Lunch Anyone?

The Smith Foundation Luncheon Planning Workgroup is looking for new members! The workgroup meets once a month from March until the end of May and is charged with soliciting live and silent auction items and assisting with ticket sales.
