Dialogues on DesignNew York School of Interior Design is pleased to present Dialogues on Design, a series of conversations with noted designers moderated by Newell Turner, editorial director of the Hearst Design Group and NYSID trustee. In each session two prominent designers will address issues in design and talk about their approach to their work. The dialogues will begin at 5pm, followed by a reception where the discussion will continue. Participation is by subscription: $300 for the series. Interior Design Today: Alumni Exhibition

The celebration of our 100th anniversary begins with an exhibition of work from our esteemed alumni. More than 30 alumni, established designers as well as recent graduates, will show the continuity and evolution of interior design. A wide range of projects for living, working, playing, and healing celebrates the diversity and complexity of the profession.

Donald Kaufman: The Art of Custom Paint ColorsA discussion with master colorist Donald Kaufman, who creates custom paint colors for clients from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, to art collectors’ homes, to the offices of high-tech firms. He will be joined by interior designer Carey Maloney, M (Group), to discuss past collaborations and the impact of architectural color. There will be a book signing to follow, featuring the speakers’ books–Color Palettes: Atmospheric Interiors Using the Donald Kaufman Color Collection and Stuff by Carey Maloney.

Timothy Rohan: NYC’s Modernist Architectural InteriorsArchitectural historian Timothy Rohan lectures on Manhattan’s lost but remarkable Modernist domestic interiors. Between 1965 and 1985, New York architects such as Paul Rudolph, Robert A.M. Stern, Charles Gwathmey, and Alan Buchsbaum explored innovative aesthetic, spatial, and social dimensions for living when they renovated Manhattan apartments, townhouses, and lofts. Seizing the interior from interior designers, they saw it as a realm for experimentation, a way to expand or establish their reputations, and eventually as an important source of income in the deepening recession of the 1970s.

Sean Corcorran: Design for Learning SpacesSean Corcorran, general manager of Steelcase Education Solutions, will discuss how space impacts behavior and how design thinking is transforming classrooms and learning spaces. In the United States the average “functional age” of a school building is more than 40 years. Meanwhile, students, pedagogies, and technology have all changed while our physical learning environments continue to look and work the same. This lecture will focus on how to best help schools, colleges, and universities design solutions for the many spaces where learning happens, from classrooms and libraries to in-between spaces and cafes.

The Evolution of Interior Design: Alumni Panel DiscussionIn conjunction with Interior Design Today: Alumni Exhibition, this panel will bring together four NYSID alumni to discuss the evolution of the interior design profession and their experiences working at their respective firms—residential, commercial, large and small. Panelists include Mariette Himes Gomez, founder and principal at Gomez & Associates; George Marshall Peters, interior designer at Pamela Banker Associates; Erika Reuter, senior interior designer at HOK; and Therese Virserius, founder and principal at Virserius Studio. The discussion will be moderated by alumna Becky Button, principal at Gensler.

Free for all NYSID alumni. There will be a reception following the lecture.

James Russell: Sustainability and Resiliency in NYCSally Henderson Memorial Lecture on Green Design

James Russell, the newly-appointed director of Design Strategic Initiatives at the NYC Department of Design and Construction, will speak about the agency’s recently released Guiding Principles for Design Excellence; upcoming initiatives in environmental sustainability, resiliency, equity, and healthy living; and the potential impact for interior spaces. Russell was the architecture critic for Bloomberg News, editor at Architectural Record, and has written for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Economist. He is the author of The Agile City: Building Well-Being and Wealth in an Era of Climate Change.

This event is FREE and open to the public. Reservations are encouraged.

Creative Collaborations: Designing Signature Product LinesMore and more established interior designers are embarking on creating their own product lines—furniture, rugs, lighting, and accessories. Interior designers Alexa Hampton and Laura Kirar, and licensing agent Kate Verner will discuss the ins and outs and pros and cons of developing signature product lines. Moderated by Glenn Gissler, president of Glenn Gissler Design and president-elect of American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) NY Metro Chapter.
