The winter and spring at the Cleveland Institute of Art are filled with countless opportunities to feed your artistic soul. From our art and design classes for every age group, to gallery exhibitions featuring intriguing artists and emerging talent, you will certainly find an activity that speaks to you. Many of our programs are free and open to the public including our Cuba Artist Symposium and spring gallery exhibition, The Art of Form + Scale, featuring the work of beloved faculty member Barbara Stanczak and our first commissioned work, Music Box, by internationally renowned installation artist Dave Cole. See the work of our students during our Spring Design Show and the 66th Annual Student Independent Exhibition—last year’s exhibition was hailed by the Plain Dealer as “engaging, exhilarating, and very, very, fresh.” Plan to attend a film at the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque or build your art and design skills through one of our Continuing Education programs. Silent Film SeriesJan 7–Feb 26

Reconnect with and discover the magic of silent movies during Cinematheque’s series “Artists of the Silent Screen.” We will screen 14 films showcasing the work of some of the cinema’s greatest pioneers—from D.W. Griffith, Buster Keaton, and Lillian Gish to George Méliès, Sergei Eisenstein, and Fritz Lang. All will show in film prints, all with live or recorded music. Maestro of the Stick FigureFri Feb 24

Animator Don Hertzfeldt makes a rare in-person appear-ance on February 24 at the Cinematheque. Hertzfeldt, an Oscar nominee whose works include Billy’s Balloon and Rejected, will screen a selection of his short films, including for the first time, his complete “Bill” trilogy and his latest 23-min. work It’s such a beautiful day. Join scholars and artists as we explore the dynamic issues surrounding Cuban art and culture. The keynote speaker will be Rachel Weiss, Professor, Arts Administration and Policy, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, author of To Build the Sky: To and From Utopia in the New Cuban Art, 2011.

The Symposium panel discussion features artists Meira Marrero, José Toirac and Alex Hernández along with Rachel Weiss and David Hart, Associate Professor of Art History, CIA.

The Music BoxDave Cole

The Art of Scale + FormOpening receptionFri Mar 30, 6–8pm

View a CIA-commissioned work by renowned conceptual artist Dave Cole as he converts full-size construction equipment into a large-scale music box. Known for his breathtaking public sculptures, Cole will deconstruct a 13-ton drum soil compactor and rebuild it into an actual music box complete with oversized tuning pins playing the Star Spangled Banner.

Form + AnswerBarbara Stanczak

CIA faculty member Barbara Stanczak’s meticulous sculp-tures blur the line between abstract and figural, reminding us that ocular experiences can be physical too. Her sculpture takes on the feel of the natural elements from which they are made—Italian translucent alabaster, butternut wood, gold leaf, and copper. In this exhibition she captures complexities and contradictions in eye and hand, smoothing the surface of rough stone, for example, to reveal its fluid origins.
