Feature
From chalkboards to SmARt boardsThe K-12 classroom has seen a wave of technology changes over the years. These
changes not only transform the classroom, they transform how kids learn. To help
make sure our teacher candidates are prepared for this environment, technology
is integrated throughout the Granite State College (GSC) curriculum.
For some of the students in our School of Education, they are tech-savvy and
ready to get their hands on these tools. For others—especially those who are
transitioning into education as a new career path—the technology component
can be unfamiliar or intimidating.
Stacy Champey has experience on both sides.

Beginning as a Tech-Novice
I was very resistant to technology. I spent the first 45 minutes of my Assistive Tech class in fear because all of the people in the class were set up and ready to go…I didn’t even have a Gmail account.
today, Stacy is a super user of some of the most popular and powerful technology tools available.
Building Her Career in Education I was a substitute teacher when my kids were young because that’s what worked with my family, life, and schedule. After a few years, I was then hired as a paraprofessional. My middle son is on the autism spectrum and he has behavioral and mental health issues. Through my work with him and my knowledge of the autism spectrum, I was a great fit for the school district’s behavior program, and I really liked it. From there, a natural pathway to the classroom emerged. Stacy earned her undergraduate degree in psychology and mental health. She then transitioned to Granite State College for a post-baccalaureate teacher certification.
In Her own Words Stacy’s Story
Pursuing a Dual Certification
My undergrad prepared me for working with students with emotional, behavioral disabilities but I wanted to take that to another level. I want to work with the students on a teaching level and needed an additional certification. I decided to go with a dual certification in Special Education and Learning Disabilities because it’s really marketable.
through her experience, Stacy has seen the tremendous impact that technology can have on children as they learn.
I’ve seen students who have behavioral issues and have a difficult time with writing. It affects their behavior, motivation, and by using technology and the apps that are out there, it really makes a difference. It’s more engaging. It helps them start to enjoy learning which is important for those with behavioral issues, but it’s really for any student.
Emerging as a Technology Leader
today Stacy finds herself taking the leadership role when sharing technology with her colleagues and GSC classmates. through her sheer self-motivation and coursework, Stacy has prepared herself to meet the needs of a dynamic and technology-rich 21st-century classroom.
even better—Stacy is achieving her career goals! Last fall, Stacy stepped into the role of special education teacher at a school with a principal who’s very familiar to her: Amy Allen, one of Stacy’s favorite GSC instructors.

The School of Education at Granite State College has embedded Swivl remote conferencing technology for the purpose of providing dynamic observation opportunities to teacher candidates as well as providing them tools to open up additional teaching options in the classroom. The technology has met with great success and positive feedback.
Self-reflection is one of the most impactful tools in education and the classroom. The Swivl allows the teacher to self assess, reflect, and adjust their own practice. We are all learners and the Swivl has given us an individualized, personalized and focused Professional Development resource that impacts student achievement.

Being able to observe myself teach has taught me so much about my teaching that I was not aware of. My most valuable lesson learned was to let go. I didn’t understand how engaging my students in authentic learning experiences would make my life easier and provide an even better education for them. I changed my practice so students felt safe to ask questions and make suggestions about their learning.

note for Financial Aid StudentsIf you are receiving federal financial aid and withdraw from coursework in any given term, federal return calculations may apply. A pro rata schedule is used to determine the amount of federal aid a student has earned at the time of withdrawal up to the 60% point of each course length. You are responsible for any resulting account balance. Withdrawals do affect your completion rate for Satisfactory Academic Progress required to receive federal aid.
If you are (1) withdrawing from all your coursework in a term; and (2) planning to return for late start coursework in the same term; and (3) the official drop date for the late start coursework has not passed; you are required to provide the Office of Financial Aid with written confirmation of your intent to return during the current term to avoid a withdrawal calculation. Written confirmation may be provided on the Withdrawal Form or by emailing [email protected] at the time of withdrawal.
Advanced Funds for Federal pell Recipients to obtain Books and SuppliesEligible Federal Pell recipients may have funds paid to their accounts ten days prior to the term start to cover the average cost for books and supplies if there is a credit balance on their account after direct charges have been paid. Students are responsible for repayment of these funds if they drop from any or all coursework. Students may opt out of this process by submitting the Opt Out of Advanced Funds Form. Students who have a previous account balance are not eligible for Advanced Funds. To be eligible a student must be registered for classes at the time the advanced fund process runs 10 days prior to term start.
