Recent surveys suggest that
younger Americans are becoming
increasingly more involved
in philanthropy. The Market
Foundation is ortunate enough to have two
really special young supporters: siblings
Rogan and Domenica Zangari, age 11 and
10, respectively. Rogan and Domenica have
been raising money or the Market Foundation
since they were only 5 and 6 years old!
Like most young, active children, Rogan and
Domenica were looking or ways to ward
o boredom one summer. Thats when they
came up with the idea to host a pillow sale
at their buildings annual BBQ. We had a
couple pillows because when we were in
kindergarten, we made pillows in class,
Domenica explains.
They priced the pillows at $2.99 each.
During their requent trips to the Market,
the kids would oten see $2.99 peppered
throughout the produce stands. And when
they saw how well the produce sold, they
gured it would work or their pillows as well.Very strategic, indeed!
Initially, their plan was to keep their earnings,
but their ather, Marco, encouraged them to
donate the money to a good cause. Marco
and his wie Susan have been living in
their nearby condo or almost 20 years and
consider the Market a special place. The
Market has a larger reach beyond fowers
and produce. So when the kids came up
with the pillow sale, we thought it would
be a good idea to donate the money to the
Market Foundation, Marco explains.
So the little pillow sale quickly evolved
into an annual auction because, according
to Rogan, you most likely will get more
money like some pillows we got $24.00
or. They also recruited their neighbors to
donate auction items, including handmade
pottery, homemade jam, and even wine.
Their goal each year is to raise more money
than the previous year. The rst year we
got, like, $154.00 and the next year wegot, I think, $200.00 and it kept going up,
Domenica mentions.
To date, they have raised more than
$1,000.00, and each year they make the trek
across the street and up the Hillclimb steps
to personally deliver the check to the Market
Foundation oce. It eels like we did a good
deed and it eels better than just mailing it,
Rogan states. I eel happy that we helped
these people.
Needless to say, these two are a
shining example or young kidsand
even adultseverywhere. When I ask
them i they always get along this great,
they both nod their heads in agreement.
Dad chuckles and chimes in, This is
one o the things that works swimmingly.
There are certain things that do not
like ball games.
Jerry did three tours in Vietnam, one
o which was his very rst ocial duty
assignment ater basic training. His last
assignment beore retiring in 1989 was
supervisor o the Aviation Electrical Branch
onboard the USS Nimitz, an aircrat carrierbased out o Bremerton, Washington.
The next ew years were spent working
at a local shipyard, US West and the U.S.
Postal Service. As with any major transition,
Jerry aced some challenges with his new
civilian lieit was during this time that
his battle with alcoholism heightened. I
preerred to drink all day than go to work,
he says while gazing out the window over
Elliot Bay.
Ater several DUIs in multiple states, he had
hit rock bottom and a riend at work urged
him to seek help. He told me Id be able to
look in the mirror one day and see a dierent
person, someone I really like, Jerry says.
Jerry entered rehab in 1998 or six months.
Last week, he celebrated 11 years o sobriety,
and to this day upholds a sel-imposed no
driving rule. What I like about sobriety is I
now have a lie that Im conscious o. I didntlike who I was as an alcoholic.
Discovering his favorite place:
the Market community
When Jerrys parents came to visit him in
Bremerton one year, they visited Pike Place
Market. Jerry instantly ell in love with the
Market and moved to downtown Seattle
shortly thereater.
He recalls walking past the old Senior
Centerwhen it was located above the Pike
Market Medical Clinic on 1st & Virginiaon
his way to work. I would hear pool balls
upstairs and had no idea it was a senior
center. I thought it was just an extension o
the Virginia Inn.
When Jerry got a bad case o the fu in the
late 1990s, he visited the Clinic, and ater
his appointment, his doctor encouraged him
to go upstairs or a ree hot meal. That washis rst experience with the Senior Center
an experience that would lead to many more
opportunities and great new riendships.
Jerry begins to chuckle as he recalls meeting
Zoe Freeman, the Senior Centers activity
director. She snatched me up when they
needed help moving to the new location. I
agreed to volunteer or a ew hours that day.
He describes their special bond as that o a
brother and sister.
What started out as a one-time volunteer
gig evolved into something more: Jerry
also volunteered or two years at the
Downtown Food Bank, the Senior Centers
sister agency here at the Market. And
eventually he was hired on as a sta
member at the Senior Center where hes
been or the past ve years. I love my job.
I love coming here, especially since its at
my avorite place.
As we nish our breakast, I ask Jerry
what Memorial Day means to him. His
eyes begin to well up as he looks at me
and says, Its about paying tribute and
remembering all the men and women who
have come and gone. I have riends that
were lost in Vietnam.
Memorial Day is about honoring the
countless heroes who sacriced their lives
to deend our reedom. To Jerry, all the
brave men and women who have served
or are currently serving in the military, and
especially to those who gave the ultimate
sacrice, we oer our humble gratitude.
