Its a brisk all morning here at Pike

Place Market. The amiliar scent o

pastries in the air, the chill o ice

poured over sh displays and the

songs o Market buskers bring a skip to

my step. Tourists and locals alike begin to

ll the Market, shopping or resh ood and

    handmade crats. Meanwhile hundreds o

    seniors, amilies and downtown residents

are lining up a ew foors below at the Pike

    Market Food Bank.

The Market community is a place where people

care about you and love you, says Linda, a

volunteer and resident o the Pike Place Market

community. Were all here for each other.Linda arrives at 7:30 AM to start her 6-hour

volunteer shit and, like many o the volunteers,

shell leave carrying her own bag o groceries

as a ellow shopper o the Food Bank.

The Food Bank is a small warehouse

space located inside o the Pike Market

Parking Garage. More than 500 amilies and

households rely on the Food Bank every

week to provide groceries to help them get

by. Dapper Darrell,as he is lovingly named

or his high-ashion style, welcomes each

and every person with a smile.

A dozen volunteers stand ready to hand

out crates ull o staples: rice, pasta, beans,

canned tuna or ham, milk, tea or coee,

juice and bread. Whats unique about the

Pike Market Food Bank is the mound o

resh produce that is donated every day

    by our Market armers.

    Meanwhile, volunteers are buzzing around

in the back room, unloading pallets o

FoodfromthesoulFor decades, Pike Market Producer, Lina, has donated whatshe doesnt sell to Pike Market Food Bank. Overall, ourMarket armers donate up to 500 pounds o ruits andveggies every week to eed the hungry at Pike Place Market.

Rick shows o the meatloa he just prepared to share withvolunteers at the Pike Market Food Bank.

Michael at the Pike Market Senior Center is proud o the4,000 healthy meals he prepares every month or low-income seniors.

As hundreds o Food Bank shoppers wind

their way through the lengthy line, at the

Pike Market Senior Center a long row

o soup bowls are lled with piping hot

portions o pho noodle soup, prepared

by a group o Vietnamese women. Its a

    special lunch eventWorld Table Saigon.

There is not a lack of food in this country,

but there is a lack of effective distribution

in a form they can use it,says Michael

    Montgomery, Meals Program Manager at

the Pike Place Senior Center. More than

80% o regular members to the Senior

Center are homeless, with nowhere to

store groceries or prepare meals. Thats

why hot, healthy meals cooked up at the

Senior Center are just as needed as the

packaged groceries at the Food Bank.

In addition to a lack o ood, many

members o the Senior Center are dealing

with health issues like diabetes and

    hypertension. Michael prides himsel in

cooking not only 4,000 hot meals a month,

but meals that are healthy too, meeting

    the nutritional guidelines or seniors.

    When youre hungry, your day-to-day

becomes about food, says Michael. Here

at the Senior Center people get to sit down

and have a meal together that is cooked

with carewhere at least for a little while

they can put their worries aside.
