I also have a new novel, O Livro de Emoções (The Book of Emotions), coming out in Brazil in just a few months.

Continua o debate sobre o Acordo Ortográfico da Língua Portuguesapelos membros da Comunidade dos Países de Língua Portuguesa(CPLP). Durante o colóquio “Língua Global,” realizado em Moçambiqueem março passado, quando da visita do Presidente de Portugal CavacoSilva, o Ministro da Cultura de Portugal disse não ver empecilhospolíticos quanto`a concretização do acordo. LM - Could you tell the Portuguese Newsletter read-ers about your career as a novelist and your mostrecent achievements?

JA - Since I was very young I have had an interest inliterature. But I waited until 1987 to publish my firstnovel, after I had already published four books in thefields of history and political philosophy. I wrote a totalof four novels, all set in Brasilia. After being translatedinto Spanish, my third novel, The Five Seasons of Love,was launched in the US precisely in April 2008. I alsohave a new novel, O Livro de Emoções (The Book ofEmotions), coming out in Brazil in just a few months.

LM - Could you tell us a little about the novel that waspublished in the US?JA - It is the third novel of the “Brasilia Quartet”, whichcan be read independently from the others. I set thesenovels in Brasilia, among other reasons because by doingso, I can focus on post-utopian themes that interest me es-pecially. Brasilia as an idea coincides with the search formodernity that accompanies the whole history of indepen-dent Brazil. It somehow summarizes the national dreamsand deceptions. However, the story of this novel could havebeen set elsewhere. I hope it has a universal flavor as itreflects upon creation and renewal and deals with universalthemes such as love and friendship. The Fifth Season re-defines utopia as the attempt to organize chaos, not withwhat is distant and unachievable, but with what is near andvisible.

LM - And how about the new novel that will be launchedin Brazil?JA - The main character had already been present in previ-ous novels. It is a book about memory, the visible and theinvisible, based on a story of a blind photographer.

LM - What are your future plans as a novelist?JA - To continue working a little everyday on some piece offiction, as I have done for almost thirty years.

LM - Could you tell the Portuguese Newsletter readersa little about your background?JA - Besides the novels, I have written some books of es-says in political philosophy. My Doctorate degree, which Ireceived in Paris, is in Philosophy. I am also a career diplo-mat, having studied at Instituto Rio Branco, the BrazilianDiplomatic School, of which I later became the director.And I have been a professor at universities in Brazil, Mexicoand the US.

LM - It is unusual to find a diplomat and a Professor ofLiterature in the same person at the same time. How doyou see yourself as an educator?JA - I was invited to teach literature, first at Berkeley andlater at Stanford, not because of my academic backgroundin this field, but basically because I am a writer. I havealways been a reader of Brazilian fiction and poetry, andmy classes were only a way of exchanging ideas with mystudents about these readings, starting with our great clas-

sics, such as Machado de Assis, Graciliano Ramos, andClarice Lispector. Many years ago, in Brazil and in Mexico,I taught courses in Political Philosophy and Philosophy ofInternational Relations that had to do with my academic back-ground.

LM - What are some of your contributions or initiativesto the Portuguese language and Brazilian studies in theU. S.?JA - I was glad to contribute toward the creation of theJoaquim Nabuco Chair in Stanford and the Rio Branco Chairin Berkeley, by the Brazilian government, in conjunction withthe local universities. These chairs funded the residence ofBrazilian scholars at each institution for a few months annu-ally. I also assisted in the establishment of a Lectorship inPortuguese at the University of California Santa Cruz. Morerecently we created a pilot program for the teaching of Por-tuguese in elementary and secondary schools in Florida.

LM - In your opinion, in which areas should the Brazil-ian government invest to promote Brazil and Portuguesein the U.S.? Is Brazilian literature in translation one ofthem?JA - Brazil has a great tradition in literature, neverthelesseven our greatest fiction writers and poets are relatively un-known in this country. Only a few anthologies of Brazilianpoetry have been published here – one of them, back in thenineties, by the way, due to an initiative of mine: Nothingthe Sun Could not Explain, for which I wrote a foreword.So, you are right, many more translations could and shouldbe made, and an official support in this respect would makea difference. Of course this is not the only area with greatpotential. Much can still be done to strengthen relations be-tween our universities. We can make partnerships and cre-ate bridges between Brazilian and American cultural institu-tions so that our music, cinema, performing arts, and visualarts become more present in the US.

LM - How do you see the future of Portuguese languagein the context Brazil-U.S. relations?JA - I have noticed in the last years an increased interest inthe teaching of Portuguese in some American universities.Ideally there should be Advance Placement exams (AP’s)in Portuguese, which in itself would be an incentive to thestudy of Portuguese in high schools and later in college.Heritage Portuguese is a new field due to the increasingnumber of Portuguese-speaking immigrants. And pilotprojects for the teaching of Portuguese have lately beenestablished in some elementary and middle schools.

Brazil as a Rising Global Player: Implications for Portuguese

In the last few years, the Brazilian economy has been remarkablystrong, attaining its highest sustained economic growth sincethe 1970s. Today, Brazil leads the world in exports of chicken,coffee, sugar, soy, beef and orange juice, and foreign investorshave taken note, substantially increasing their involvement1 .Brazil has been paying off its debt, lowering interest rates, andminimizing spending; and aided by hikes in commodity prices,“Exporta Brazil” efforts have balanced and improvemed the Bra-zilian economy. This economic growth has put an internationalspotlight on the Portuguese language, increasing the amount ofstudents’ and corporations’ interest.

Perhaps the most important change was one of image. Brazil isbeing perceived as a more and more prominent and respectedplayer in the world market through major national firms such asEmbraer, Petrobras, and Odebrecht. Brazil’s national tourismagency, Embratur, has been investing heavily in the “branding”of Brazil through the “Marca Brasil” campaign2 . These actionscontribute to a more positive image of the country and culture,and help to counter the pessimistic news stories that have tradi-tionally dwelled more on Brazil’s social problems.

Portuguese enrollments reported by the MLA language surveyare rising steadily each year (see figure 1). However, these num-bers still pale in comparison to other languages, ranking 13th

after such languages as American Sign Language, Italian, Rus-sian, Arabic, and Ancient Greek in 2006.Another concern withthe ranking of Portuguese is that the U.S. government is makinga move toward removing Portuguese from the list of Less Com-monly Taught Languages, which could affect funding and sup-port for many Portuguese programs, specifically FLAS scholar-ships at Title VI Centers.

As would be expected, the number of Business Portuguese pro-grams are even lower. In a very recent study conducted by Chris-tine Grosse, Business courses are offered among languages suchas Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Korean, Japanese,Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. For 2006, she found that themost widely taught courses are Business Spanish (18 universi-ties), Business Chinese (13), Business French (12), BusinessGerman (11), Business Japanese (8) and Business Portuguese(6). A 2002 study of Business Portuguese conducted by Risnerindicates that seven U.S. universities offered Business Portu-

guese. These statistics, however, are based on survey responseand other programs could have been potentially left out.

With Brazil at an apex, the question we must ask now is how canwe, as Brazilianists and Portuguese language instructors, utilizethe increased interest in Brazil to recruit more students into Bra-zilian Studies and Portuguese language studies? I suggest thatsome areas to consider for improvement and innovative strate-gies are recruitment, program development, materials develop-ment, and faculty training.

RecruitmentStudents today need to see a practical future benefit from thecourses and programs they choose, thus the importance of Bra-zil in the world economy must be stressed. The increased de-mand for Portuguese speakers, coupled with their rarity com-pared to Spanish speakers, leads to a competitive advantage forPortuguese speakers seeking employment. Departments suchas business, economics, journalism, advertising, tourism, etcetera, are dominated by more common foreign languages; there-fore strong interdepartmental ties are an important aspect of re-cruitment. Availability of a minor in Portuguese, especially onewith a specific course map for students in the professionalschools, will aid recruitment. In addition, emphasizing the richcultural heritage of Brazil and its abundance of ecological areaswill draw students from Humanities, Sciences, and Social Sci-ences.

Program developmentArticulation among faculty in the professional schools and lan-guage faculty is necessary to create a study plan and help withthe marketing of the language. A regular 3-hour Business Portu-guese course or courses are helpful in this respect. Creation ofshort term study abroad programs in another discipline, even ifin English, often stimulates interest in Brazil so that returningstudents sign up for language and culture courses. Some ex-amples of these types of initiatives are short term MBA weeklong study tours, summer courses, and semester long programsthat include academic seminars and company visits that high-light direct interaction with Brazilian executives. Many of thesetypes of programs have been functioning well at schools throughthe efforts of their Centers for International Business Educationand Research (CIBER). Looking off campus, initiating contactand collaboration with Brazilian chambers of commerce and U.S.based businesses for program support and assistance in orga-nizing internships and career symposia that bring executives tocampus provide ways to offer direction to students seeking an

Materials Creation/TrainingAn additional area that needs attention isthat of materials available for BusinessPortuguese so that instructors are notburdened with creating all of their ownmaterials, though that void has had somerecent additions from U.S. and Brazilianpublishers. At the intermediate to ad-vanced levels the Editora Galpão has pub-lished Panorama Brasil, Quality Mark re-leased Português no mundo corporativo

in 2004, and in 2007 UT Press published aseries of case studies entitled BraziliansWorking with Americans. At the beginnerlevel the Editora Pedagógica Universitáriapublished Diálogo Brasil, which has abusiness focus throughout the text.

In the University of Florida websites thereader will find specifics links and contactsto find out more about model programs,symposia, and courses that are focusedon business in Brazil.3

In recent years CIBERs have offered sum-mer faculty development modules to pro-mote understanding of the Brazilian busi-ness environment through Mercosul andother programs specific to Brazil. However,these have traditionally recruited businessfaculty who have little or no internationalbackground. UF CIBER is currently creat-ing a new faculty development programfor summer 2009 specifically for

methadological improvement of Portugueseinstruction geared toward a specific pur-pose.

Exploring the areas mentioned above willrequire a joint effort of faculty and univer-sity administration, government, and com-munity. Efforts to recruit more students intoBrazilian Studies, Portuguese languageprograms, and to Business Portuguese willbenefit both the U.S. and Brazil—one ofthe largest Latin American commercial part-ners with the U.S.

Este jogo foi concebido pelos poetas do movimentosurrealista que acreditavam que a criação literária deviaprovir do subconsciente e, utopicamente, ser produzidapela coletividade e não individualmente. Imaginaram,portanto, um tipo de jogo poético coletivo em que umautor escrevia uma(s) frase(s) ou um(uns) verso(s)numa folha de papel, que era então dobrada e passadaa um parceiro, mas de modo que este só pudesse vera(s) última(s) palavra(s) ou o(s) último(s) verso(s) doque havia sido escrito e desse continuidade, assim, aopoema. Resultaram desses jogos poemas muitoestranhos e belos, como o seguinte:
