IRRIGATION DESIGNSOFTWARE

Created exclusively for irrigationdesigners, Irrigation Design Assist (IDA) isa software package from Rain Bird. Work-ing in conjunction with AutoCAD, a leadingcomputer-aided design software program,IDA can handle sprinkler layout, pipe sizing,and other time-consuming irrigation designtasks.

Once the designer defines the areaboundaries, selects the irrigation products,and inputs spacing criteria, IDA's computer-aided sprinkler layout program automati-cally places sprinklers in rectangular or tri-angular patterns to provide uniform watercoverage, even for irregularly shaped areas.The designer can also modify the plan orexperiment with different products orspacing.

The computer-aided pipe sizing programuses hydraulic formulas to performaccurate pipe sizing calculations. Thedesigner chooses the pipe type and class,then IDA calculates the flow rate and pro-vides the correct pipe and valve sizes.

A detailed database relates each productsymbol in IDA's menu of Rain Bird irrigationequipment to product and performancespecifications. As the design develops, IDAautomatically keeps an ongoing inventory ofthe products used, which allows thedesigner to request a take-off at any point.RAIN BIRD

VERTICUTTERIOVERSEEDEROne-step seeding and/or verticutting can

be accomplished by the Turf Slicer, fromClassen Mfg. The unit has a front-mounted

seed box which operates by friction fromthe drive wheels. Rotating slicer blades,spaced two inches apart, slice the sod to apredetermined depth down to 1112inches.Depth is adjustable with fingertip screws.

The Turf Slicer is self-propelled by aneight-hp, Honda OHV four-cycle enginewith centrifugal clutch. Moving at 2.27 mph,its 21-inch-wide swath can cover 21,000square feet per hour. Designed to cover large turf areasquickly, the Cushman GA 60 is a high-production, coring-type fairway aerator. Itcan aerate up to 1.3 acres per hour, cover-ing a 60-inch swath with a 21/2-x-41h-inchcoring pattern, at an aerating depth down tofour inches.

The GA 60 is powered by a 33-hp, liquid-cooled engine mounted on the unit, whichis towed behind a Cushman Turf.:rruckstervehicle with a unique, rubber-isolated fifth-wheel attachment. By pulling one pin andbacking off one hand screw, the fifth-wheelhitch is easily removable without tools.'

Standard coring tines for the GA 60 arethe new, non-plugging, open-back typeintroduced by Cushman for its Ryan aera-tors. Several other tine options are availablefor the GA 60, from 3/8- to 3/4-inch diameter.

The aerating mechanism features fourpairs of tine arms, each protected by a slipclutch. The unit is lowered for operation bythe Turf-Truckster hydraulic system, con-trolled by the operator from the vehicle seat.The aerator engine is started and monitoredfrom the Turf-Truckster seat.

When the operator uses the hydrauliccontrol to lower the aerator tines, the aera-tor engine automatically speeds up and theclutch engages to begin aeration. Forwardaerating speed is regulated by the operatorwith the vehicle's variable-speed governor.The clutch is automatically disengaged andthe aerator engine slows when the operatorraises the unit.

The GA 60 is equipped high flotationtires, is 71/2feet wide and 42 inches high intransport position, and weighs 2,020 Ibs.According to Cushman officials, the unit will
