2 Hydraulic Update (Active and Passive Roll™)

There have been some minor variations in the John Deere 30 Series sprayers since they were first released. In some cases this has resulted in slower wing speeds and other variations that can affect the performance of NORAC’s Spray Height Control systems. Installation of larger diameter hydraulic hoses and fittings will greatly improve boom speeds and therefore improve overall performance.

Ensure all pressure has been bled from the system before disconnecting any lines or fittings. Hydraulic pressure will exist on the wing tilt circuits unless the wings are being supported by other means. You may wish to perform the hydraulic installation with the wings in transport position, resting on the ground or with the tilt cylinders fully extended.

Component failure due to oil contamination is not covered under the NORAC UC5™ system warranty. It is recommended that a qualified technician perform the hydraulic installation.

2.1 Valve Assembly

1. Remove the hoses the run from the JD valve block to the NORAC valve block.

2. Remove the 4FORXR 4MORT fittings that are inserted between the JD valve block and the hoses that run to the tilt cylinder.

3. Reattach the JD hoses directly to the JD valve block.

fittings.

Page 6: Spray Height Controller - NORAC Systems … one end of hoses H04 to the F03 fittings on the RIGHT tilt cylinder (Figure 3). Route the hoses as shown in Figure 3. Connect the other

4. Remove the 6MB-4MOR fittings from the 1st and 2nd station of the NORAC valve block. The 1st and 2nd stations are the two valve stations nearest the side with the pressure and tank lines.

5. Install the 6MB-6MOR (F05) fittings into the “A” and “B” ports of the 1st and 2nd stations on the NORAC valve block. Tighten to 18 ft-lbs (24 Nm).

6. Disconnect the existing hoses from the tilt cylinders. Remove the existing 90 degree fitting on the rod end of each cylinder. Install a 6FORXR-6MORT fitting (F03) onto the ports of each tilt cylinder. Reconnect the cylinder hoses and 90 degree fittings to the newly installed tees.

7. Connect one end of hoses H04 to the F03 fittings on the RIGHT tilt cylinder (Figure 3). Route the hoses as shown in Figure 3. Connect the other end of hoses H04 to the NORAC valve block “A” and “B” ports.

8. Connect one end of hoses H02 to the F03 fittings on the LEFT tilt cylinder (Figure 3). Route the hoses as shown in Figure 3. Connect the other end of hoses H02 to the NORAC valve block “A” and “B” ports.

9. The “raise” lines must be connected to the "B" ports of the NORAC valve block.

10. The “lower” lines must be connected to the "A" ports of the NORAC valve block.

1 The valve block port orientation and filter cap may be different on all valve blocks. Some valve blocks may have more or less stations than what is shown.

3 Roll Cylinder/Link Arm Pin Update

Replacement of the existing pin on the upper roll cylinder/link arm with a 20mm pin is necessary because this will reduce the play in the roll, therefore improving stability. The lower pin does not need to be changed, but it should be tightened.

1. Remove the top pin from the roll cylinder or link arm. If the pin has been welded, the weld will have to be removed.

Figure 6: John Deere Roll Cylinder/Link Arm Location

2. Install the supplied 20mm pin and snap ring (P04) in place of the existing ¾” pin. If there is more than 1/16 inch (2 mm) of wear between the mounting holes and the pin then the pin should be welded to eliminate the free movement.

Figure 7: Installed Roll Cylinder

3. Check the lower bolt for free movement. If there is any free movement, tighten the bolt.

3.1 Target Modification and Alignment (Active Roll™ Only)

It is very important that the rods be installed on the right hand side of the sprayer. If the brackets are installed on the left hand side, they must be moved.

1. Ensure the sprayer chassis and booms are leveled and the center section is approximately 4 feet above the ground. A ladder or step will be required for this part of the installation.

2. Check that the rubber bumpers have been removed from both ends of the roll frame (Figure 8).

3. Install the frame target (B07) onto the parallel lift frame. The frame target should be mounted to a frame member that does NOT rotate with the boom

4. Install the roll sensor bracket on the T-shaped black intermediate frame (Figure 8). The bottom of the sensor should be located 41” (104cm) from the frame target as shown in Figure 10. The sensor should be mounted between the parallel lift arms and the wheel in a position that will not interfere with folding.

5. Install the spring target (B08) onto the boom center section 16” (41cm) down from the bottom of the sensor as shown in Figure 10. The spring target must be mounted to a frame member that moves with the boom.

Figure 10: Target Location

6. Adjust the targets and sensor bracket using a level or a plumb line. Ensure the sprayer is level and the booms are level when installing the roll targets. Both targets must be aligned on the centerline of the sensor they must be perpendicular to the sensor.

Mount frame target as

close to the vertical

member as possible.

Figure 11: Target Rod Alignment (Side View)

7. When the target positions are correct, ensure all mounting bolts are tight. Double-check the target locations to ensure that they haven’t drifted out of position.

8. Once alignment is correct, trim the top rod so it is 1 inch past the edge of the sensor, as shown above in Figure 12.

4 Friction Pad Greasing

NOTE: This applies to both Active Roll™ and Passive Roll™ updates.

For good performance it is recommended that the friction pads be greased. Before calibrating the software grease the sliding pads. Manually rotate the boom (by pushing on the ends) to access the entire surface of the pads when greasing.

It is recommended that the pads be re-coated with grease every 20 hours of operation.

5 Software Setup

Firmware must be updated to Update Package 1094 or higher for UC5™ and Version 7D or higher for UC4+™ before proceeding.

1. Start up your sprayer and test the sprayer’s functionality. The display terminal does not need to be powered on for the original boom function switches to operate. Unfold the booms and raise/lower each boom and the main section.

Confirm that the cabling and hoses are routed properly over the entire range of boom motion and folding.

2. If any functions do not work, review the hydraulic portion of this manual to check for proper installation.

3. Turn on the power for the display terminal.

4. Perform the AUTOMATIC SYSTEM SETUP procedure as described in the UC5™ and UC4+™ Spray Height Control Operator’s Manuals.
