It is with great pleasure that I present this report to you, our valuable members, recording the highlights and achievements of 2014/15.

Achievements

This year has seen some significant changes for the team at Sports Focus and when I refer to the team, I mean the staff and Board alike. The most notable one has been the shift from relying on funding from our traditional partners and delivering the agreed program outcomes, to identifying major challenges for our sporting clubs and then sourcing the necessary funding to achieve the best outcome for our community. The other notable achievement during the year has been the completion of our new strategic plan, which we are very excited to launch at this year’s Annual General Meeting.

Illicit drugs have dominated news headlines for most of 2015. Whether it be articles relating to; motor vehicle accidents, acts of violence, petty theft or even sport, illicit drugs and more specifically, Methamphetamine (Ice) has been intrinsically linked to each scenario. Early in 2015, it was reported in a major Melbourne newspaper that a suburban football coach had been supplying his players with Ice as a means of enhancing their performance. Whether the allegation were true or not, it immediately tarnished the solid reputation of grassroots community sport.

Through a partnership with Victoria Police, AFL Central Victoria and an independent Nurse Practitioner, we were able to develop and deliver 14 information sessions to approximately 670 football and netball players from three (3) of our local leagues. The impact and insights from these sessions was profound and certainly opened our eyes to some of the challenges that confront us. Fortunately, others also shared our vision with City of Greater Bendigo awarding us a Partnership Grant of $49K over three years to further tackle this issue. ‘Clubs Taking Control’ is a project extension of our earlier information sessions that will bring about sustainable change to the regions sporting clubs.

Our new strategic plan has been a terrific accomplishment for the Board and staff. We first commenced its development in 2013, but due to unforeseen circumstances, it is only now that we have a document that will challenge and drive us. Our sincere gratitude goes to Peter Hanlon Sports Management Consultancy and Wendy Holland from communityvibe for their respective contributions in the development of the final document. The plan focuses on three (3) main priority areas; Governance, Management and Participation. We look

forward with great anticipation to the outcomes that can be achieved through the plan over the next three (3) years.

Program Delivery

I am pleased to inform you that a new three (3) year VicHealth funded program has been announced that will further support the work of Sports Focus in the area of health promotion. The Regional Sport Program (RSP) will concentrate on delivering on VicHealth’s 10 year Action Agenda by focusing on two (2) main imperatives;

1. Physical Activity – encouraging inactive or less active members of our community to becoming more active and;

2. Water – strengthening policy and practices so that water becomes the beverage of choice in clubs and for participants.

The opportunity to be innovative in the program’s design and delivery is something the team is looking to embrace.

A review of the Sport and Recreation Victoria funded programs; Access for All Abilities and Regional Sport and Recreation is underway and we expect the results to be released prior to Christmas. Our long relationship with the Australian Drug Foundation as a community partner for the delivery of the Good Sports program is also under review.

Thank You

My sincere gratitude goes to the Board and staff. It has been a full and exciting year for the team. We continue to deliver and achieve outstanding results in our respective fields. Our congratulations to Lauren and Brad Fawcett on the safe arrival of Riley Beau. There’s no greater gift than that of a child.

Finally, I would like to thank each of our stakeholders for their continued support of Sports Focus. We are in a very unique position to strongly influence the sport sector through your continued support.

Good Sports… is an initiative of the Australian

Drug Foundation. The program works with

community based sporting clubs to promote responsible

management of alcohol, to increase viability of sporting

clubs and assist in creating a welcoming and friendly

environment.

Access for All Abilities…Many

community clubs are already doing great things to welcome

and include people with a disability into their sporting

environment. Sometimes however, clubs can benefit

from advice and support to actively encourage people with a disability to participate

fully in the life of their club.

Healthy Sporting Environments Program…VicHealth initiative to support sports clubs to become healthier, welcoming and more inclusive. Creating a healthier culture within community sporting clubs can lead to benefits such as a positive club image as ‘family-friendly’ welcoming environment, opportunities for increased sponsorship, and the potential for greater volunteer, administration, coaching and officiating services and skills.

Sports Focus continued to provide Sailability Bendigo with invaluable administrative support, particularly around the management of volunteers, bookings, marketing and stakeholder engagement. Sports Focus also provided fundamental assistance with the development of a ‘Terms of Reference’ document, to be used in the coming year as Sailability Bendigo transitions from a steering committee to a subcommittee.

181 people of all abilities participated

And the winner is...Kylie Evans from Sandhurst Hockey Club.

Kylie has been a very active member of the Sandhurst Hockey Club since she joined in 2007 and began

serving on the committee the following year.

Kylie is continually looking for ways to educate and ‘upskill’ herself for the betterment of her club and for

Hockey in Bendigo as a whole.

Kylie has been instrumental in developing and implementing innovative programs for the club. These

programs include the Sandhurst Development Fund, the Sandhurst Volunteer Reward and Recognition

Program and the full review of the club’s Constitution to reflect current needs.

Kylie also represents and assists the club and her sport, with many other groups such as with

Hockey Victoria and Hockey Central Victoria initiatives. The sheer volume of work that she does, and her welcoming, professional approach are highly valued assets for her club.

Congratulations to all of the Finalists...

THE HEALTHY SPORTING CLUB CANTEEN Project… Whilst working on the Healthy Eating module of the program with the clubs, Sports Focus engaged with Nutrition Melbourne for their expert advice and support to promote healthy eating in sporting clubs. This was a worthwhile activity as Nutrition Melbourne were able to work with Sports Focus and the clubs with canteens on an individual level to ensure that we were working within the clubs capacity.

So what we were trying to achieve?

The VicHealth Healthy Sporting Environments Program, Healthy Eating Module, explored ways of increasing the proportion of healthy food and drink choices available in sporting clubs as well as….

Supporting a culture and environment where healthy food and drink choices are the easy choices.

Supporting club members to make healthy choices.

Improving member confidence in the quality and variety of food and beverages available.

Promoting and improving health and wellbeing in the community.

We understand that creating a healthy club culture needs to go beyond just menu changes in club canteens. Strategies need to provide education, challenge attitudes, change behaviours and alter perceptions that sporting club canteens only “sell junk food”.

So, Sports Focus together with Nutrition Melbourne, developed a Healthy Eating Framework and a number of resources to guide clubs on how to provide healthier menu items and also make them the quickest sellers!

“Our club is now more aware and more organised…we have more knowledge on the issues” Participating Club

About the initiative Funded through the Partners in Recovery Innovation Fund from Loddon Mallee Murray Medicare Local; Golden City Support Services partnered with Sports Focus’ Access for All Abilities program to plan, implement and evaluate Rec Ready… an initiative designed to increase the knowledge, ability and confidence of people living with mental illness to make connections with a local sporting club through a shared responsibility model. Through this initiative, Sports Focus has engaged and supported local sporting clubs who have committed to facilitating participation opportunities for individuals through a tailored and supportive pathway as identified.

The Process After Golden City Support Services identified who of their clients that participated in a 10-week health and wellbeing program had a desire to participate in sport, what sport they would be interested in participating, where and how they might like to participate; Sports Focus undertook the following:- Identified and engaged an appropriate club. Ensured the personal information of individuals was discussed and utilised in a sensitive manner. Identified club mentor/s. Identified and supported individual club capacity building needs as required e.g. Mental Health

First Aid Training for club volunteers and one-to-one conversations. In partnership with the clubs; identified, implemented and evaluated an appropriate induction

process and pathway to support ongoing participant engagement.

The Outcomes

Four (4) participants who would otherwise not be participating in mainstream sporting clubs are now supported to do so in an ongoing and flexible manner for physical and social benefit.

Three (3) sporting club environments committed to reducing the stigma associated with mental illness and demonstrating the real value of inclusive sporting club environments for social inclusion outcomes.

A replicable participation model developed.

Key Success Factors/Challenges/Learnings The importance of:- Consultation with individuals regarding what sport they actually want to play and how they want

to play it in addition to recognising their individual support needs.

The Active & Well After Breast Cancer was a pilot initiative funded by the Victorian Government and was implemented by the Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) in collaboration with the Australian Cancer Survivorship Centre (ACSC) and BreaCan. The initiative aimed to increase physical activity and healthy eating in Victorian women diagnosed with breast cancer. The Active & Well After Breast Cancer Information Day in Bendigo was one component of this pilot and involved engaging a range of health and wellbeing experts to support 180 women to undertake goal setting and develop a tailored physical activity and healthy eating plan. Women were also encouraged to find out about sport and recreation opportunities available in their

local area… and this is where Sports Focus played a role!

The Partnership… This was a partnership project between the BCNA, Sports Focus, State Sporting Associations and local sporting clubs. The role

each organisation played in this partnership is as follows: BCNA – to

educate women that it is ok to return to sport and the

benefits associated with being physically active. Sports Focus – to educate clubs regarding how to re-engage women back in to sport and the importance of providing social/non-competitive options. State

Sporting Associations – to encourage local clubs to

think about the participation opportunities available to this

target group. Sports represented on the day included; Squash Victoria, Bendigo

Squash Club, Bendigo/Eaglehawk Badminton Association, Bowls Australia, Tennis Victoria and Golf Victoria.

“The day was such a vibrant and exciting space, and

provided women with the opportunity to connect and find out more information

about getting back into sport” Breast Cancer Network Australia

Every sporting club has the responsibility to provide a safe environment for its participants. Injury prevention and injury

management are key components of providing a safe sporting environment. Sporting clubs need to have appropriately trained

personnel in first aid and managing sports injuries so that participants can remain active and connected to the club.

Sports Focus in conjunction with Sports Medicine Australia provided Sports First Aid training and Level 1 Sports Trainers

courses in March 2015.

Recruiting and retaining volunteers has been identified as the biggest issue facing regional sport and recreation clubs. To help clubs address this challenge, Sports Focus ran a ‘Recruit and Retain Volunteers’ workshop that focused on effective volunteer management. It provided clubs with innovative strategies to support their volunteers, so that existing volunteers stay involved and prospective volunteers want to join. Volunteers are the lifeblood of any regional sporting club, this workshop provided clubs with the tools required to manage a healthy and effective volunteer workforce…

In conjunction with our Access for All Abilities Program and work conducted with Golden City Support Services through the ‘Rec Ready’ Program, we were able to provide FREE Mental Health First Aid training to the clubs involved in the program. Course participants learnt about the signs and symptoms of the common and disabling mental health problems, how to provide initial help, where and how to get professional help, what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective, and how to provide first aid in a crisis situation.
