THE INDIAN SPORTS,FITNESS AND WELLNESS INDUSTRYOverview & Growth Potential

With increasing disposable incomes as well as awareness about the importance of healthy body and mind,

the Indian sports, fitness and wellness industry is poised to grow at an exponential pace. The sports industry

in particular has seen unprecedented growth over the last 10 years with revenues spiking from 856 million

USD in 2006 to 1899 USD in 2015. This has created remarkable opportunities for businesses in the industry

to start or grow their enterprises.

The Indian fitness industry too has immense potential for growth. Rising stress levels, sedentary lifestyles

and increased consumption of junk food has led to greater need for healthy lifestyles. But currently the

fitness industry in India remains fairly fragmented since the majority of the market appears to be dominated

by a large number of mom-and-pop gyms. Organized fitness services account for merely 25% of the overall

fitness industry. The organized fitness market is concentrated in top eight cities of India (Delhi NCR, Mumbai,

Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune, Hyderabad, and Ahmedabad). However, the markets in most of these

cities remain under-penetrated.

The sports, fitness and wellness industry in India is expected to grow at a rate of 23% in the next year and

over 70% in the next 5 years. The primary reasons for this are growing disposable income, rising lifestyle

diseases, rising awareness of healthy lifestyle among Indians and the fact that these industries are least

aected by slowdowns or recessions in the economy.

Hyderabad has always remained a premium sport-ing destination in India from the time of the Nizams. From Hockey and Cricket to Horse Riding and Golf, Hyderabad oers a myriad of sporting activities and a rich sporting culture.

As is true with the rest of the country, cricket is undeniably the most popular sport in the city. The Hyderabad cricket team is part of the Ranji Trophy Elite group, falling in the South Zone and is one of just two teams from the state of Telangana, with the other one being the Telangana cricket team. Hyderabad’s cricket team has won twice in the Ranji Trophy, and were runners up for three times

Following cricket, hockey is another major sport in the city. Hyderabad, not surprisingly, has its own Premiere Hockey League team, the Hyderabad Sultans, who won the first Premiere Hockey League tournament held in 2005. Currently, the Sultans have their home in the Gachibowli Hockey Stadium, which also hosted the 2005 Premiere Hockey League tournament. Horse racing is also quite popular in Hyderabad and the Hyderabad Race Club attracts jockeys from all over the country through the various derbies and events there. It is located at Malakpet and hosts both summer and winter races.

Hyderabad has produced several sporting greats from the likes of Azahruddin, VVS Laxman, Arshad Ayub, Venkatapathy Raju, Ambati Rayudu, Mithali Raj, etc. for Cricket and Humpy Koneru, Pentala Harikrishna, Dronavalli Harika for Chess and Pullela Gopichand, Saina Nehwal, Jwala Gutta, PV Sindhu, Chetan Anand for Badminton and Karnam Malleswari for Weightlifting and Mukesh Kumar for Hockey and Sania Mirza for Tennis and Abhinav Bindra for Shooting and many more.

Hyderabad’s Sporting Legacy & CultureWhile Sania Mirza and Sania Nehwal have been ranked number 1 in their respective fields of tennis and badminton, Azharuddin and VVS Laxman have made a mark in the field of cricket. Abhinav Bindra is an Indian shooter and he became the first Indian to win an individual gold medal at the Olympic Games when he won the 10 m Air Rifle event at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Hyderabad plays host to several other eminent sporting and fitness events, including the Hyder-abad Marathon which boasts of being the second largest marathon in the country, witnessing over 20,000 participants every year. In 2015, the first ever Hyderabad Cyclothon was held, putting cycling at the forefront for all fitness and cycling enthusiasts. The Yacht Club of Hyderabad also holds several events including the Kayakathon, Telangana Open Regatta and the Monsoon Regatta. Shooting too has gained tremendous popularity in the city with shooting events and competitions held by the Telangana Rifle Association and the Rifle Association of Andhra Pradesh (R.A.A.P).

The sporting culture in Hyderabad is also made evident from the various stadiums that have been built in the city. The first stadium built was the Fateh Maidan stadium, later renamed Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium. There is also the newer Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium at Uppal. For hockey and football, there is the G.M.C. Balayugi Athletic Stadium while the Velodrome caters to cyclists. There is also a state-of-the-art venue boxing, taekwondo, archery and shooting and for all aquatic sports, there is the Aquatics Complex Stadium which has a holding capacity of 3,000 spectators. The Hussain Sagar Lake is also used for rowing, canoeing, and kayaking.
