SPORTEX Fishing Rod Programme 2008We have further developed and extended our fishing rod programme forthe 2008 season on the basis of our existing programme. Individual rodseries have been expanded at the request of our anglers and new rodsdesigned for successful angling methods. They are all in conformity withthe worldwide recognised SPORTEX tradition with their unique actioncharacter and their high quality and fine finish.

What one should know about fishing rods:

Rod material:The fishing rod is one of man's oldesthunting tools. In Europe these "fishingrods" were still made out of willow,hazelnut or juniper until about 150years ago. Since at the time fishingreels had not been invented, they couldonly be fitted with a line the samelength as the rod made out of braidedhemp or silk with which the bait waspresented, either sunk or dipped.

Quote:For our stretches of water only one-handed fishing rods are recommended whereby fly and maggot fishing rods can be guided freely in your hand like a whip.

The first big step for our modern rodswhich facilitate casting the line with areel was the invention of the splicedrod by a Mr Higginbotham, who gluedcut splices from imported wood in atriangular shape and consequentlyprepared the way for dynamic castingrods.

Today, in modern rod building materi-als such as carbon fibre, kevlar, glassfibre and their compounds are used.The choice of these materials is ofparamount importance for the qualityof the rods and their price. Here, thedensity of the warp threads and weftthreads of the matting and the qualityof the resins used with which thisfibre compound is processed for therod blank are decisive.

SPORTEX HT CrossWindingcomposite technologyThe worldwide, unique quality andaction of our rods is based on the onehand on the choice of the best carbonmaterial with a high volume percentageof fibre and on the other in the care-ful processing during manufacture.At SPORTEX the carbon fibres areinstalled in one direction around thecore of the rod, so that they run as faras possible parallel to the rod axis.This increases the stability andstrength of the blank. With highmodular carbon bands wound cross-wise, this compound is tempered instages. As a result the blank is harde-ned specifically and retains its elasti-city and resilience even with extremeuse over many years.Only very few manufacturers use this very time-costly process, but forSPORTEX rods it guarantees theirwell-known longevity and reliability.You can recognise our rods by theirvisually striking cross winding. It isnot decorative winding, but a con-structional power winding which guarantees resilience and stability.

Rod actionOne of the most important criteria of a fishing rod is its bending perfor-mance – the action. For practicalangling use, as a rule rods with semi-parabolic action are the right choice.

Tip action:The rod works principally in the tip section. The remaining section of the rod hardly moves at all.

Semi-parabolic action:The rod bends from the tip to approximately half the rod. The lower section remain slightly stiff.The ideal action for fast rods.

Parabolic action:The design of the blank is calculatedin such a way that the rod builds upits dynamics and energy for castingstarting from the tip through themiddle section into the hand unit. Theentire rod bends when playing thefish.

SPORTEX RodsAs a result of our HT-CrossWindingblank winding technology SPORTEXrods have a semi-parabolic actionwhich guarantees rod speed, castingprecision, stamina and feeling withmaximum energy transmission. Wecombine this semi-parabolic actionwith a purposeful tip action in ourspecial rods such as TEAM WALLER,our contact rods for Zander and forjerk bait angling.

Line guidesThe first guides were made of brass,nickel or steel wire, which basicallycorresponded with our rings nowa-days in design as guide or coil rings.They were substantially heavier and inaddition, only partly able to deal withthe friction of the flowing line.Many of our older anglers are stillfamiliar with the first guides withceramic inserts. After longer periodsof angling these guides cut and wereresponsible for fish losses as a resultof the damage to the line.Nowadays, aluminium oxide (Hardloy)is used as the insert for inexpensivestandard guides. Rings with siliconcarbide (SIC) or Alconite inserts arebetter and lighter. As a result of theirextremely smooth surfaces and thehigh level of heat dissipation thesematerials comply outstandingly withthe exacting requirements demandedby monofilament and multifilamentlines for guides.

For the guides of our SPORTEX rodswe only use high quality Fuji SIC gui-des, the even narrower SIC gunsmokeguides or alconite guides. The highlevel of heat dissipation of theseinserts is the requirement for our rodsbeing equally well suited for the

Care of your rod You should follow a few basic rulesfor handling and taking care of yourrod so that you can enjoy it for manyyears to come:

- Clean the rod under running water and dry after each use in saltwater.

- From time to time you should pro-tect the rod surface with rod wax or Ballistol.

- High quality carbon rods are extre-mely break-resistant but sensitive to impact. Check for cracks or pres-sure marks after the rod has been hit or dropped. In these instances the rod could also break subse-quently after long use. Try to avoid dropping your rod onto hard ground or stones. Check the guidesfor possible damage to the insert.

- The carbon material is electrically conductive. For your safety avoid angling under current conduction and do not fish during thunder-storms.

Casting weight? Test curve?For carp rods the casting weight istraditionally stated in lb instead of ingram. Magnus FunBased on our worldwide successful open sea rod series we have developed a lighter but nevertheless mercilessly power-ful rod in the weight class 12 to 20 Ib specifically for our open sea fans e.g. in Norway or on the Atlantic coast.
