As we finished up our series on Jesus’ “I am” statements found in the gospel of John, our last one was from John 6:32-41. It is in this passage we spent some time talking about how Jesus is the only one that can satisfy our hunger on this world. I used a restaurant’s food menu explaining how sometimes we can get overwhelmed by the choices and how sometimes we pick the wrong thing off the menu which does not bring satisfaction. Basically we have all been handed a
menu in life and it’s full of options that promises satisfaction.
What are you going to order? What’s the one thing that will bring satisfaction to you in this life? Well, in John 6 Jesus answers those questions by saying this, “I am. I am the bread of life. He who eats of me will not hunger again.” Remember Jesus has just crossed over the Sea of Galilee and where this huge crowd is waiting for Him. He’s already done some incredible miracles so the people are waiting to see more of that and for Him to do something for them.
At some point Jesus recognizes the crowd is hungry and He asks His disciples what they should do. Philip sticks to what he knows that even if they had eight months wages they still won’t have enough to feed everyone’s appetite. Andrew finds a boy that had 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish but I’m sure he’s thinking it will only feed Jesus and the other disciples. Jesus on the other hand takes the bread and fish and multiples it. And I verse 11 it says that Jesus took the food, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated…as much as they wanted.”
The crowds fall asleep on a full stomach, Jesus and His disciples cross over the Sea again and the crowd followed once they awoke and saw that Jesus was gone. So why did they follow Jesus? What did they want? Well, when they woke up they were hungry again and their meal ticket was gone. They were looking for nothing more than physical bread to satisfy their hunger. Jesus was looking to fill them for good. But they weren’t seeing it, they didn’t get it. Their satisfaction was right in front of them but they were looking for something they conditioned themselves to hunger after…nothing.
So Jesus tells them to stop pursuing food that spoils and go after the food that endures to eternal life…which He will give them.” The crowd was excited to hear that but again didn’t understand His offer. They wanted the physical appetite met and Jesus knew they were hungry for something deeper, something more. So they said, “Give us this bread that we will never be hungry again.” And Jesus replies, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.” And then He once again had to give the religious leaders and grumblers a history lesson about God sending manna to earth and how He was the bread that God has sent to satisfy their spiritual hunger…if they had any.
Church Family, what are you hungry for? What are you pursuing in this world? What is the one thing that will truly satisfy your hunger pains? Jesus says, “I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.” In other words: “I’m it!” And at that many of His followers left so He asks th12 disciples, “You do not want to leave too, do you?” And Peter responds, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.”

When you look back in your life, what is one moment that you would have liked to stay in forever? One moment that you were so happy, or excited, or satisfied? For me, the birth of my second child, Benton, was an exciting moment that I never wanted to leave. Christina had 24 hours of labor and no results with Cali leading to a C-section. She was exhausted, I was worried, and we were thrilled to have our first child. But we already knew the baby would be a girl, we had the name picked out, and everything was in place except the baby. Benton, on the other hand, was a different story.
We did not know the gender or even what names we had settled on, but we did know the day and process because of a scheduled C-section. The anticipation of the doctors words concerning who this little child was really amped up the excitement for us, and really made that a very special moment. I love all my kids and their births were all exciting, but Benton’s had a little something extra.
Life isn’t all exciting moments, though. In fact, it is the bad moments that make the exciting ones so great, and the great moments that make the rough moments so deep and torturous. Are there moments in your life that you would like to remove? And not just the individual moments, but the continued feelings and consequences that played out over time? Would you remove that moment?
That’s a tricky question. The removal of pain is incredibly enticing, though the power of comfort, healing, and growth shouldn’t be ignored. On Wednesday nights we’ve been doing a series called The Family Project, and this past week we looked at how children can actually teach us something about God. Sometimes being a parent can be such an overwhelming task as we begin to fear all the ways that we could mess our kids up. But studies have shown that there is a process called “rupture and repair.” When bad things happen in a child’s life (as simple as a parent yelling or as complicated as you can imagine), there is an opportunity for the parent to tend to the wound. When a parent helps correct the situation (as simple as apologizing or as complicated as you can imagine), there is a bond that is created that is stronger than if nothing bad had happened at all. The repair is so powerful that it makes the rupture a blessing.
Can you imagine how God feels about your hardest times? Do you suppose that he looks at your difficulties and wishes to
remove them? Or, do you suppose that the trials you’ve faced have brought you closer to him? Do you believe that those challenges
actually made you stronger, more mature, and grew your bond with God even tighter? Life is full of good moments, and moments that
are not as great. They are all valuable, and maybe, even more so the bad. They help you connect to the one that is greater than
everything else.

99 THOUGHTS FOR PARENTS OF TEENAGERS THE TRUTH ON RAISING TEENAGERS FROM PARENTS WHO HAVE BEEN THERE
EXPOSE MEDIA’S LIES By Walt Mueller
Here’s a statement you won’t find the least bit surprising: Media often tell lies. When our teenagers haven’t learned how to view the world through the lens of God’s Word, they risk believing and living the media’s destructive lies rather than believing and living God’s life-giving and liberating truth. Not only that, but it makes it more difficult for us to lead our children into an understanding of God’s will and way when they’ve been numbed to the truth, When messages from the media – particularly entertainment media – stand in opposition to God’s truth, our teenagers are faced with a dilemma that leaves them wondering, “Who and what should I believe?” IT’S OUR PARENTAL RESPON-SIBILITY TO SPOT THE MEDIA’S LIES, TEACH OUR KIDS TO SPOT THE LIES, AND THEN TO ANSWER THEM WITH THE TRUTH. For example, me-dia messages leave them believing that to be worthwhile, you must be beautiful. But God says. “I care about who you are, not what you look like.” Media messages tell them to avoid pain and pursue pleasure at all costs. Jesus tells him followers to expect suffering and exer-cise perseverance. EXPOSE THE LIES, AND PROCLAIM THE TRUTH.

Do you ever notice that you define yourself by specific things or circumstances that show up in your life? Maybe it’s like there’s this box you carry around with everything that defines you: your stuff, your work, your family, your kids, your gifts and talents, or your home. But there’s a problem with looking at life like this because if this is how we see our lives it’s all too easy to become preoccupied with the wrong thing. Think about all the stuff in the box. It’s “your” stuff, right? Or is it?
We tend to talk about our lives using words that highlight our ownership of those things and circumstances. Words like my, ours, and mine. And those words can make a huge difference
on how we see the world. As long as we keep using these words, we can tend to believe that our stuff will make us happy and that putting more stuff into our boxes will make us even happier.
But the truth is just the opposite. Something radical happens when we look at our life as not really ours. When we view our life as really God’s gift to us—it changes everything. When we see that all the stuff we have is somehow connected to God and the story He wants to tell with our lives, it begins to change the way we see everything. When our world doesn’t revolve around us, our situations look a lot different.
That’s why this month, we want to explain something to kids about contentment. It is deciding to be happy with what you’ve got. In other words, you can choose to be happy because of what God has actually given you. You can choose to shift your focus away from what you don’t have and toward what God desires to do with the life you have. When you trust Him with your life, you become more focused on being grateful for every-thing He’s already given to you. The Bible has a lot to say about contentment. This month, we’re going to unpack several of those moments where people learned something about contentment as well as some key principles about how we can live our lives focused on trusting God no matter what.
See, when it comes right down to it, contentment is a heart issue. It can’t be solved by getting the thing that’s off-limits, the thing that someone else has, or even more of a good thing you already have. In other words, contentment happens when we place our trust in the One who is able to meet our needs each day. When you teach kids to see their life as a gift from God it sets them up for a life of contentment and fulfillment. There will be no reason to be distracted by what others have, or what’s off limits, or what we had in the past. And when all of us really trust God, we will be content with exactly what He has put in our box for today and won’t worry about the future.
