Assemble a Spiffie.org MPGuinoKit

Now that you have the required parts and tools, lets solder!

These are the Version 2 MPGuino directions. Version 1 directions areavailable.

Place the 5.1vZener diodes.Place the two 5.1vZener diodes intotheir respectivelocations (marked5.1v). Ensure youalign the diodes'stripes with the silkscreen stripes onthe PCB.

Place the 1N4004diode. Place one ofthe 1N4004 diodesinto the locationmarked 'D1'. Ensureyou align thediode's stripe withthe silk screenstripe marked onthe PCB.

Place the 10KΩresistor. Place the10K resistor(Brown-Black-Orange-Gold) intothe location marked'10K'. You mayinstall the resistorin either direction.

Place the 220Ωresistor. Place the220R resistor(Red-Red-Brown-Gold) intothe location marked'220'. Like mostresistors, you mayinstall it in eitherdirection.

Place the 1KΩresistors. Place thetwo 1K resistors(Brown-Black-Red-Gold) into thelocations marked1K.

Place the 100KΩresistors. Place thetwo 100K resistors(Brown-Black-Yellow-Gold) intothe locationsmarked 100K.

Solder and trim the resistors and diodes. Flip the board over andsolder each of the leads from the resistors and diodes that have beeninserted. When you're done soldering, use side-clippers to trim theleads flush with the back of the PCB.

Place, solder, andtrim the 7805.Place the 7805 intothe location outlinedon the PCB'ssilkscreen (metaltab against thePCB). Lining up the7805's hole and thePCB hole is onlycritical if you'regoing to install aheatsink. Solderand trim the 7805'sleads.

Place and solderthe 28pin socketPlace the 28pinsocket into thesilk-screenedlocation on the PCB.Make sure toline-up the notch inthe socket with thenotch in the PCBsilkscreen! Flip theboard over andsolder the socket inplace.

Place, solder, andtrim the 16MHzcrystal. Place thecrystal into it'slocation (identifiedby a silk-screenedoval). You mayinstall it in eitherorientation. Solderthe leads, then trimthem flush.

Place, solder, andtrim the 0.1µFceramiccapacitors. Placeall 4 ceramiccapacitors into theirsilk-screenedlocations on thePCB. (Identified bya rectangular boxwith two holesinside, not the twolabeled 18pFthough.) You mayinstall the caps ineither direction.Solder all 8 leads, then trim flush.

Place, solder, andtrim the 18pFceramiccapacitors. Placeboth 18pFcapacitors into theirsilk-screenedlocations on thePCB. (Identified bya rectangular boxwith two holesinside and the label'18pF' underneath.)Solder the leadsand trim flush.

Place, solder, andtrim thetransistor. Orientthe transistor so it'sflat-side matchesthe flat side of thesilk-screenedoutline. Dependingon your transistor, you may need tobend the leadsslightly to matchthe hole layout.Insert the

transistor, solder allthree leads, andtrim them flush.

Install the other1N4004 diode. With the other1N4004 diode, locate the endwithout a band.Bend-over the leadon this end until itis parallel to theother lead. Nowinsert the diode intothe position besidethe FTDI chip aspictured. (The diodeside should be closeto the capacitoroutline, the leadside close to the28pin socket.)Solder both leadsand trim themflush.

Install the tactileswitches/buttonsFlip the board over,so your looking atthe solder side.Place the threeswitches throughthe holes; they'rewider then they arelong, orient themwith their leadsclosest to the otherswitches. Their legsshould snap intoplace holding theswitches in the PCB.

Solder all 12 leads.

Place and solderthe connectors.Place the USBconnector into theholes outlined bythe silkscreen. It'smounting lugs/legsshould snap intoplace and hold theconnector loosely tothe PCB. Solder thefour leads. Nowapply plenty ofsolder to the twomounting lugs.Place the RJ11connector into it'slocation. You mayrequire a slightamount of force topush the mountinglugs through; theywill hold theconnector in place

quite firmly. Solderthe four or six pins.(Depending on yourkit, the RJ11 mayhave 4 or 6 pins(6P4C or 6P6C),only the center 4contacts are used.)

Place, solder, andtrim the 470µFelectrolyticcapacitor. Locatethe negative leadon the capacitoreither by the stripeon the body or theshorter lead. Alignthe capacitor so thislead is inserted inthe hole notdenoted by the '+'symbol. Thecapacitor's stripewill be closest tothe 7805 regulatorinstalled earlier.Solder and trim theleads.

Place, solder, andtrim the smallerelectrolyticcapacitor. Locatethe negative lead inthe same manner(by the stripe orshorter lead). Insertthe capacitor withthe negative lead inthe negative hole(not denoted with a'+'). Solder andtrim.

Setup the 16 pinheader. Place the16pin header, longside down, into abreadboard.(Depending on yourkit, you may havetwo 8 pin headersinstead. Simpleinsert themside-by-side tomake a long strip of16 pins.)

Solder the 16 pinheader to the LCDdisplay board.Place the LCD boardover the header(LCD up). If yourdisplay has two setsof contacts, alignthe display asshown with theback-light header(small white tab) onthe right. Solder the16 pins. Removethe board andheader from thebreadboard.

Solder the LCDinto place. Orientthe MPGuino ontothe header pins. Ifnecessary for alevel fit, trim orbend back the threehighlightedmounting-earsshown in the firstphoto (I had toremove the centerear; you may onlyneed to bend them

slightly. This willdepend on yoursoldering). Solderthe pins into place. You may addspacers betweenthe board and LCDas you wish. Youmay also trim theheader pins if youwish.

Install theATmega µC. Fromthe factory, theATmega's pins arebent slightlyoutwards; gentlybend them to a 90°angle to the bodyusing ahard-surface like atable-top. (LadyAdademonstrates.)Making sure youalign the IC's notchwith the notch inthe socket andsilkscreen (or alignnotch near thebuttons), push theIC into its socket.
