The 40K house was a study in developing affordable housing prototypes that respond to a specifi c context and user. The client for this home was a middle aged man and his older parents, whom he was taking care of. The house was designed to respond to the local context, fi t the unique needs of the client, and maximize effi ciency in the fl oor plan to keep costs down while maintaining functionality.

GREEN FORESTpark

Green Forest Park was a response to a challenge to identify an area within the Nicholtown neighborhood that would be well suited to an intervention that would promote social engagement and community development. Three critical intersections were identifi ed in the existing neighborhoodthat provided a framework for a three phase proposal to extend an existing pocket park along the Reedy River deeper into the neighborhood. Proposed programs were developed in response to community needs and were designed to be fl exible to accommodate a variety of uses andchanges in use over time.

The Philadelphia studio studied adaptive re-use strategiesfor abandoned industrial buildings in post-industrial areas. The Willow Steam Plant is a landmark building in downtown Philadelphia that has remained abandoned for over 30 years. A program for the building was developed after visiting the building and researching demographic information about the surrounding neighborhood. The YMCA was seen as a program that could take advantage of many of the opportunities presented by the existing building and that would promotehealthy living in an affordable and community centered waywithin this up and coming part of Philadelphia.

The Clemson University Student Memorial Chapel is a spaceintended to honor students who have died while enrolledat Clemson. As the culminating project in a studio focusedon precast concrete, the chapel required the applicationof knowledge learned through previous explorations of thematerial. The concept for the chapel design was to submergethe chapel interior and adjacent plaza into the steep topographyof the site in order to create a sheltered space well suited for meditation and refl ection.

The architectural freehand drawing course, taken as anelective, explored fi eld sketching using a variety of mediaincluding pencil, pen, brush pen, oil pastel, marker, and watercolor. The focus of the class was on loose sketches thatcould be done in a short period of time as a way of looking at,understanding, and learning from existing architecture throughday-to-day experience and travel.
