1. Introduction

1.1 Overview

A Baicells broadband wireless access system allows telecom operators, service providers, and enterprises to bring broadband internet services to customers or employees, even in challenging environments such as rural and remote locations, and areas with highly dense populations. The Baicells Spectra Long-Term Evolution – Unlicensed (LTE-U) outdoor u4G-UE1000 user equipment (UE) is part of the Baicells broadband wireless access system that integrates with LTE carrier networks based on Frequency Division Duplexing (FDD) technology and using unlicensed frequencies.

The hardened outdoor LTE-U UE enables multiple users with wireless and wired smart LTE devices such as cell phones, laptops, tablets, and printers to access the UE simultaneously over the unlicensed 5.8 GHz band. It communicates with the service provider’s LTE-U eNodeB’s (eNB) at cell sites located in the area, and the eNBs communicate with the LTE carrier network. Figure 1-1 illustrates a deployment scenario where outdoor LTE-U UEs are transmitting surveillance video from multiple cameras to an internet destination via an LTE-U eNB.

The u4G-UE1000 provides higher capacity and better coverage, and is easy to deploy with a user-friendly, plug-and-play design and simple local and remote Web GUI management. Because it is standards-based, the UE is built to adapt newer LTE technologies as they evolve.

4. Installation Procedures This installation procedure describes how to install the Baicells Spectra LTE-U u4G-UE1000 user equipment (UE) on a pole. Follow the steps below, referring to Figure 4-1 to complete the installation.

1. Install the mounting bracket on the pole using the screws and nuts provided.

2. Place the UE unit on the mounting bracket.

3. Turn the screws to secure the unit and adjust the tilt.

4. Loosen the screws on the waterproof cover, and open the cover.

a. Follow the instructions on the Baicells SIM card to insert it into the SIM slot (Figure 4-2).

Attention: Do not power on the unit while installing or uninstalling the USIM card. Doing so could damage the card and the unit.

b. Connect the Ethernet WAN cable to the unit (Figure 4-2). On the other end, connect the power adaptor to the power interface.

c. Connect the ground (GND) cable to the GND screw and to Earth (Figure 4-2). The ground wire size should be greater than 15AWG.

5. Close the UE’s waterproof cover, and tighten the screws.

6. Power on the unit, and check the LED indicators per Table 3-1. If the status is as expected, proceed to the configuration steps in section 5.

5. Basic Configuration To configure the Baicells Spectra LTE-U u4G-UE1000 user equipment (UE), you will access the local or Web-based GUI application that comes installed on the unit. Follow the steps below to log in and complete the minimal configuration requirements for the UE to operate. For more detailed configuration information covering all of the GUI fields, refer to the Baicells Configuration and Network Administration Guide .

5.1 Log in and Change the Password

Follow the steps below to access and log in to the UE GUI application.

1. Open a Web browser, type in the URL http://192.168.150.1 (Gen 2 UEs), and then press Enter.

2. At the login window (Figure 5-1), enter the default user name (admin) and password (admin), and select LOGIN.

Figure 5-1: Login

3. After you log in, the main menu is shown in the left navigation pane. To protect your UE from unauthorized access, go to System > admin to configure a new password (Figure 5-2). The password may be 5 to 8 ASCII characters (letters, numbers, and special characters). Baicells recommends using a mix of upper and lower case letters plus numbers. Click on SAVE & APPLY.

11

Figure 5-2: Change Password

5.2 Check Status

Go to the Status > Overview window to view device status, such as connection status, signal quality, number of devices connected, product name, software version, and other information (Figure 5-3). Each of these fields is described in the Baicells Configuration and Network Administration Guide. You may need to adjust the UE direction, height, or tilt to get the best signal from an LTE eNodeB cell.

Also, check the USIM Status field to ensure it says available. If it shows a different status, try disengaging the SIM card and re-inserting it in the UE.

Figure 5-3: Status

5.3 Scan Method

The Scan Method setting determines which frequencies the UE’s routine scan of available frequencies will cover. Scanning is a process of tuning to a specific frequency and measuring the simplest signal quality [e.g., Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI)].

Page 12: Spectra LTE-U Outdoor FDD u4G-UE1000 User Manual · The hardened outdoor LTE -U UE enables multiple users with wireless and wired smart LTE devices such as cell phones, laptops, tablets,

12

As part of the cell selection and reselection process, the UE performs the scan first and then selects a small number of candidate cells to go through the next step of measuring and evaluating signals to select the best eNB to serve it.

Go to Network > Scan Method, and select either FullBand, PCI Lock, or Band/Frequency Preferred, as shown in Figure 5-4. The options are explained beneath the figure. For the Spectra LTE-U, we recommend using PCI Lock to help reduce interference and noise in the unlicensed spectrum. It also helps the UE to connect more quickly to the eNodeB. Click on SAVE & APPLY to save the configuration.

Figure 5-4: Scan Method

• FullBand – The UE will routinely scan all channels in the band, which can make the time it takes to connect longer than the other modes. The band is dependent on the model of UE being used. Click on Submit after selecting this option.

• Frequency Lock – You can specify which band(s) the UE will scan. Select Frequency Lock, and click on Add List. This will open a new window where you can input the band number and the preferred E-UTRA Absolutely Radio Frequency Channel number (EARFCN) (Figure 5-5). Click on Add to add the list. You can add more than one list.

• PCI Lock – Allows you to select the specific E-UTRA Absolute Radio Frequency Channel Number (EARFCN) and Physical Cell Identifier (PCI). Click on Add List to enter the settings (Figure 5-6). After entering the information, click on Add. You can add more than one PCI Lock list. The UE will scan the list for eNBs with the PCI and EARFCN combination.

5.4 OMC Management

Log in to the Baicells Operations Management Console (OMC), and go to System > TR-069 (Figure 5-7) to set up TR069 so you can manage the UE remotely. Refer to the Baicells Configuration and Network Administration Guide for a description of each field.

2. Click on Submit to save your selection.

5.6 LTE Connection

1. Choose Network > LTE Settings to choose the LTE connection setting for this UE as either Auto connect or Manual connect (Figure 5-4) to the LTE network. If you choose Auto connect, click on Submit to save your selection. If you choose Manual connect, go to step 2.

Figure 5-4: LTE Settings

2. To manually connect the UE to the LTE network, choose Manual connect and click on PLMN for Public Land Mobile Network to scan all available networks and to select a specific LTE network to connect to. Select Connect to connect the network. Use the Disconnect button to disconnect from the selected network.

5.7 APN Management

Under Network > APN Management, you will configure up to 4 eNBs with which this UE may connect. APN is an acronym for Access Point Name. An access point, in this case, is another term for an eNB (base station). Refer to Figure 5-8 and Table 5-1 concerning the parameters. Click on Submit to save your data.
