The red building on our Trethewey House Heritage Site was originally the Upper Sumas BC Electric Railway station. The station’s original location was on the corner of Vye and Lamson roads. The Railway Line, which skirted the southern shore of Sumas Lake, was completed from New Westminster to Chilliwack in 1910. The back of the station rested on a stilt construction and railway tracks along Sumas Lake were raised due to fl ooding in times of high water.

The beauty of BhangraRecognized as the man who enlivened

a new movement of bhangra music, the multi-talented Punjabi star, Babbu Maan is performing at the Abbotsford Centre on April 20.

Born in India in the village of Khant Maanpur, Maan became very fond of music early in his life, and sang onstage for the first time at the age of seven. After years of learning how to write lyrics and honing his performance skills, he recorded his first album at 23. Now, as a singer-songwriter, actor and producer, Mann has remained busy since bursting onto the Punjabi mainstream in the late ‘90s.

He debuted his album Sajjan Ruman De Giya in 1998, but was unhappy with the outcome and rewrote many of the songs. He followed it with the release of his first official debut album Tu Meri Miss India  in 1999, which sold well in both India and abroad. However, it wasn’t until his third album Saaun Di Jhadi (2001) that his career took off, selling over 10 million copies in India and overseas.

Maan began incorporat-ing acting into his repertoire soon after launching his music career, and in 2003 was selected as an actor and music director for the highly successful movie Hawayein. Maan went on to co-write and act in various other Punjabi films, including the biggest film-ography accomplishment of his career, Maan’s own feature, “Hashar…A Love Story.”

Maan is sure to bring his wide range of musical and performing talents to the Abbotsford Centre stage, and will impress spectators with the beauty of bhangra.

He  has since released a total of eight additional studio albums, six compilation albums and contributed to numerous Bol-lywood film soundtracks.

In summer 2013, Maan released Talaash: In Search Of Soul, his first album to break the Billboard 200 charts. His newest album release, the second volume of Aah Chak 2014, is being met with growing acclaim and enthusiasm.

While we can’t control the weather, we can certainly keep our hair and makeup looking perfect on those rainy BC days. Here are some hair and makeup tips to keep you looking great.

AVOID THE DRAMAOpt for an easier, more natural look instead of something more dramatic. A smoky eye can be a pain to clean up if it gets wet!

QUICK FIXER-UPPERSMakeup wipes, beauty blender sponges, and cotton swabs are great little extras to pack in your on-the-go makeup bag. These are perfect for quick little touch-ups once you reach your destination.

OUTSMART YOUR FRIZZY LOCKSWant to wear your hair down but don’t want it to turn into a frizzy mess once you’ve stepped out the door? Style it as normal, then wrap it in a bun and take it down once you are inside. You will get a soft wave without the pontytail marks and bumps.

CREAM VS. POWDEROpt for cream-based products instead of powder. Creams have longer staying power and can be blended more easily. When powder gets wet, it tends to streak.

Perfecting the cat-eyeWinging itBust out your liquid liner, because cat-eyes are especially big for spring. Here is a fool-proof way to get the look right every time!

TOOLS:• A felt-tip black liquid liner

• Precision tip cotton swabs, or regular cotton swab in a pinch

• Eye makeup remover

STEPS:1. Position yourself straight on

in the mirror.

2. Tilt your chin upwards and look down into the mirror.

3. Start drawing at the outside corner of your eye. Draw your ‘wing’ up toward the outer edge of your eyebrow. Repeat on other eye.

4. Dip the cotton swab in the eye makeup remover. Use the swab to make your eyes symmetrical and correct any harsh marks.

5. Once you have completed your ‘wing’, finish applying your eyeliner and connect the lines. This is where you control how thick or thin you want your cat eye to be. The thicker the more dramatic the effect.

DECORATING WITH COLOURTRUST YOUR INSTINCTS. Your personal-style and wardrobe choices are good indi-cators of colours, patterns and styles you love. If you’ve never been a big fan of yellow, then you probably won’t like it on your walls.

DO THE MATH.When choosing your colour scheme, keep the 60-30-10 rule in mind. Essentially, you want 60% of the room a unifying colour, for instance your wall colour. 30% visual interest — your secondary colour, pattern or upholstery. And 10% sparkle-factor; these are your personal-touches or the room’s jewelry.

JUST ADD BLACK.By adding a black element, such as a lampshade or pic-ture frame, you enhance the other colours in the room.

TAKE IT FOR A TEST RUN.Ask for a fabric samples! Leave them in the room you are decorating for a couple of days. Pay careful attention to how they look during the times when the room will be used most and under different types of lighting.

in the morning were more likely to eat less over the course of the day than those who saved their biggest meals for lunchtime or dinner. If time is limited in the morning, keep cereal or instant oatmeal at the office and eat breakfast as you catch up on emails.

STAY HYDRATED. It’s easy to mistake dehydration for hunger, as the symptoms of dehydration

Adapting to a healthy diet and smaller portions is a challenge. It’s important to avoid consuming more food than your body needs. The following are a few simple ways to curtail eating habits so you aren’t going overboard at mealtime.

EAT WHEN YOU’RE HUNGRY. The symptoms of hunger tend to present themselves within five hours of eating a balanced meal. Ignoring these symptoms is a mistake. The longer you ignore hunger, the less likely you are to make healthy choices, including eating healthy portions. Even a low-calorie, healthy snack four to five hours after a meal can sate your appetite and prevent you from overeating when you sit down for your next meal.

EAT BREAKFAST. Breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. Studies show that those who ate more carbohydrates, fat and protein

mimic those of hunger. Instead of immediately responding to perceived hunger symptoms by eating, drink a glass of water. If the symptoms subside within 10 minutes, then you were likely dehydrated and not hungry. Staying hydrated throughout the day will reduce the likelihood that you will confuse dehydration with hunger.

FIND TIME FOR FIBER. Fiber helps you feel full faster and for longer periods of time. In addition, high-fiber foods tend to be high-volume as well, so you will fill up on them without eating lots of calories. That’s a benefit to people looking to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight.

Overeating is a hurdle many people must clear as they attempt to adopt healthier lifestyles. But a few simple tricks makes it easy to avoid overeating without fighting constant feelings of hunger.

Suzanne Froese has been volun-teering with the Canadian Cancer Society for more than 13 years now. She’s a familiar face in the Abbots-ford Unit Office, where she’s an integral part of keeping things run-ning. In particular, Froese is the go-to person for any cancer infor-mation and literature people may require after hearing they have can-cer or a loved one has been diag-nosed. Her friendly manner and caring attitude have proven to be a wonderful support to many people in the community.

“Like so many people, cancer has touched my life. Members of my family and some close friends have been diagnosed,” says Froese. “ I do what I can to support those on their cancer journey. As a volunteer, I hear so many personal stories about how cancer has affected peo-ple’s lives and I feel it’s a real priv-ilege to listen to their stories and maybe help out in some small way.”

Froese doesn’t just donate her

“As a volunteer, I’m so proud when I start seeing the daffodil pinned on people’s lapels,” says Fro-ese. “I imagine the same thing hap-pening here in Abbotsford is also happening in other towns and cities across Canada. It makes me proud to know how many people want to show their support and give back.” Froese hopes, one day, the world will be cancer free and she’ll have worked herself out of a job.

The Abbotsford Community Office is looking for volunteers to assist with office activities, events and awareness campaigns. They have recently moved to 100A-32660 George Ferguson Way, and the office is open Monday to Friday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. If you are interested in vol-unteering or learning more about the Canadian Cancer Society, feel free to drop by or email [email protected].

has become a real stakeholder in the communities where it is rooted. “We put on events for runners; we put on a lot of clinics; we spearheaded efforts in South Surrey to build a public track. We really try to make a special effort to help people find enjoyment through the sport.”

As a business that focuses on running, Peninsula Runners has a natural tie-in with Run for Water. But Phil says their sponsorship is about more than a business-related affinity. “I remember when Run for Water first started and I was amazed at how successful it was, even the first couple of years. I thought it was a really positive event. We wanted to become involved and we’ve always promoted the event. Even before we became an official sponsor, we knew it was a good thing for the com-munity.”

Peninsula Runners opened its first store 18 years ago in White Rock. One of the big goals of the store was to help make their community a healthier and fit-ter place by hosting running clinics and local running events. Phil Ellis the managing partner of the store says “the idea was to be a running store for every-body... any level of walker, run-ner or fitness enthusiast!” Pen-insula Runners Langley opened in 2001 and the Abbotsford location opened almost three years ago. Peninsula Runners has recently come on board as a silver sponsor of the Envision Financial Run For Water.

“We really like to focus on being a local store,” Phil told me. One of the virtues of this focus is that as a business Peninsula

Peninsula Runners in virtue of the movement’s global empha-sis. “Most definitely it appeals to us,” Phil said of the goal to raise money for clean water projects in Africa. “Myself, I’m a big water guy; that’s my drink! As a runner you kind of have to drink water, right? So for me, the availability of water is so important. I would have a hard time living in a place where I didn’t have access to fresh water. So I can only imagine the difficulties faced by the people we’re trying to help. Water is the key to life.” Nicely capturing Envision Financial Run for Water’s emphasis on global citizenship, Phil summed up by saying, “I think it is a great cause. Of course we have local issues that we need to address, but the globe is small. You need to have a global consciousness these days. Our problems are shared problems and we need to do what we can to help each other.”

The unpredictability of life means that obstacles will always arise that require creativity to overcome. In recent years, unknown to many con-sumers, too many of our quality BC pork farmers have shut down due to the increasing economic pressures caused by the cyclical nature of the industry. As second generation hog farmers, it meant that with the grow-ing awareness of choosing local food, the time was right for us to re-invent ourselves as farmers and for the land-mark green corn shack to “grow up”!

Lepp Farm Market was created to bring our customers the best of BC’s foods, including our beloved pork, as well as provide a future farming opportunity for our children. When

you purchase our pork chops or fresh sausages, you can be assured that the pork was raised in the barns right be-hind the market, and we’ve eliminated routinely administered antibiotics and animal by-products in the feed.

I can confidently state that the re-maining producers are determined and optimistic, and are working with renewed enthusiasm to meet the grow-ing pork needs of BC’s diners. This industrious group is able to supply only 10% of BC’s pork, so if you’re com-mitted to buying local and supporting BC farmers, you’ll just have to look a little harder to find the BC Pork logo on your Easter ham and favorite smoky bacon!

This recipe puts a modern twist on the traditional ham with pineapple slices and it makes a great dish for entertaining. The pineapple salsa recipe (at leppfarmmarket.com) adds a fresh element to the dish!

SPICE RUB1 tbsp each garlic powder & chili powder1 1/2 tsp sugar1 tsp salt1/4 tsp pepper

SAUCE1 cup apricot or peach jam1/3 cup barbecue sauce1 tsp grated fresh ginger root1/4 tsp garlic powder1/4 tsp hot pepper sauce3 tbsp lime juice2 Lepp’s pork tenderloins

(trimmed of fat and silver skin)

DIRECTIONSCombine spice rub ingredients, rub into tenderloins. Cover loosely and refrigerate for 4 – 24 hours.

Mix sauce ingredients. Remove 1/2 cup for basting, reserve remainder.

GRILLING: Preheat grill to medium-high. Grill for 5 minutes, turning occasionally to sear and set the spice crust. Reduce heat to medium low and baste with sauce, cooking until internal temperature reaches 140-145 degrees.

OVEN ROASTED: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking sheet with foil. Spray a baking rack that fits inside the baking sheet with cooking spray and place on baking sheet. Place tenderloins on rack. Bake for 15 minutes, and baste with sauce. Bake another 10 minutes, baste again. Continue basting until internal temperature is 145 degrees.

Let rest for 5-10 minutes to allow juices to reabsorb into meat. Slice and serve with reserved sauce, or with a fresh pineapple or mango salsa (recipe at leppfarmmarket.com).

STUDENTLIFE

DESSA BAYROCKSTUDENT

UNIVERSITY OF THE FRASER VALLEY

April is practically art month in the UFV community as year-long projects burst into bloom. From theatre to fashion to graphic design, everything seems to culminate in the busy, beau-tiful month of April.

One of my favourite spring moments — aside from spotting the first snowdrop poking up from the ground — is the opening day of UFV Theatre’s Director’s Festival. Fondly known as Dfest, an audience can fit a dozen shows into just a couple days with a little planning. The shows vary from comedy to tragedy, absurd to hilarious, tear-jerking to gut-wrenching to knee-slapping. Most

are only a half-hour long, and at $5 a show they form the perfect bite of theatre to work into any schedule. This year the curtains open on April 23, hosted as always at UFV’s Yale Road campus in Chilliwack.

Something else to check out this month is the grad show of UFV’s fashion design students. Personally, I’m never going to make it to Milan — or even New York — to see a fashion show hit the runway. But anyone can taste a little haute couture in the Fraser Valley with a ticket to UFV’s Absolute Fashion runway on April 29. The outfits range from beachwear to winter layers and from practical to fantastical. Speaking of fantastical, my absolute favourite Absolute Fashion contribution of all time was Laura Auffray’s collection in 2012,

which included costuming odes to Star Wars and The Hunger Games.

Last but not least, UFV’s first ever graphic design graduates will present their portfolios at Abbotsford’s The Reach Museum and Gallery on April 24. The Mission-based diploma program is still brand new, and this first graduating class has proudly renamed themselves. “Green is new and fresh. It’s where we’re from, and where we’re headed,” their website reads. “We are Green, the first class of graphic designers in the Fraser Valley.”

As spring shoots and blooms peek their heads out of the ground, there’s no better way to banish winter than by including a little UFV creativity into your April.
