As musician Marthann Mulleavy per-formed the “Blue Danube,” Felisa Real-Macerias celebrated her 100th birthdayby dancing with her son Enrique Gineresin front of friends at the Baldwin Gar-dens Community on Feb. 4.

Music has always been a big part ofher life. As a young woman, Ms. Real-Macerias sang on radio and in amphi-theaters as a dramatic soprano, colora-tura opera singer, winning accolades andawards.

She was invited to join the Metropoli-tan Opera Theater in New York, but herfather, an old fashioned sort, insistedmarriage would be her only career and

so, at the age of 32, she married ManuelGineres.

They raised a beautiful family andbuilt a life together. She also flourishedas a professional seamstress, working forLos Angeles fashion designer LouisEstevez in the 60s and 70s. Transferringher passion and skills from singing tofine quality sewing, she was invited to“dress” fashionistas from Hollywood andNew York.

“My mother spent much of her lifedoing everything in her power to makeothers happy and to give her family loveand support,” said son Mr. Gineres.

“When she was 77, she once againtook some time to do things that sheloves and took lessons for ballet, sing-ing, and sewing.”

Her birthday continued into the nightas Enrique took her to her favorite Rus-sian restaurant and a night of dancingin Hollywood. “We shared the meal be-cause she has always eaten small por-tions,” laughed Enrique,” which is ironicbecause she has such a big heart and hasdone so many big things in her lifetime.”

Looking BackBy Joe Walker

Last month readers learnedabout the volatile lives of the22-year old millionaire twins,Timothy and Todd Nicholson, who bought the Baldwin ArmsApartments in Temple City(“Famous murder case still partof Temple City lore,” TempleCity Life, February, 2014).

A 1964 version of JustinBieber, the brothers had moremoney than sense and sincethey had inherited it, they ap-preciated it even less.

They were such identicaltwins that they could often fooltheir girlfriends into thinkingone was the other.

They did have a few loyalhelpers who assisted them inrunning the day-to-day opera-tions of their business, andEnrico Bernal was one suchemployee. He had done workfor them when they lived inPhoenix, and he knew their ex-plosive ways. It was commonfor them to get into loud andthen violent arguments, but

Enrico just minded his ownbusiness and he made a hand-some salary doing repairs andpainting in the large 45-unitapartment.

Speaking only Spanish, heminded his own business andoverlooked their strange ways.

The scary behavior of theNicholson twins was somethingto be tolerated. It sure beat thePhoenix heat. Enrico was withthe brothers on the night of Dec7, 1964, when another argu-ment broke out. Todd wascombing his hair very carefullyand ignoring his brothers plea’sfor attention, infuriating Timo-thy even more. Timothy gotviolent, rushing his brother andviciously kicking him.

He quickly retrieved a .22caliber rifle from a gun rack andaimed it at his brother. Toddraised his hand and Bernal, fearing him and the otherNicholson brother may be mur-dered, fled from the room. Ashe fled, he heard the words “I

will kill you, I’ll kill you” Shotsrang out and then silence. Toddlay dead in a pool of blood, and

Timothy left the apartmentlooking for the one witness,Enrico.

TO BE CONTINUEDNext month: Bernal is

warned to stay quiet about whathe saw, and another handymansays he was offered $10,000 byone Nicholson brother to mur-der the other.

Located in the heart of the San Gabriel Valley, home to the largest growing Chinese Americancommunity in the USA, the Temple City Cham-ber of Commerce has taken a leadership role inpromoting increased business, trade, and invest-ment between China and the United States.Whether it is traveling to Shanghai to address po-tential investors interested in the Gateway projector working with Chinese language media companySing Tao Daily newspaper to present culturalevents like the recent 2014 Chinese Lunar NewYear Street Fair, the Temple City Chamber seeksto create a bridge between East and West to con-tinually improve mutual cultural understandingand economic growth opportunities on both lo-cal and international levels.

The Chamber is excited to support and co-or-ganize the 2014 China US Business Summit sched-uled for April 27 as an essential and importantpart of these bridge-building efforts. The China-US Business Summit is a bilateral meeting for co-operation and communication between small andmid-sized American businesses located in Chinaand the US. It is an annual affair and this year isthe fifth summit.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the China-US bilateral trade was worth more than$500 billion in 2013 (China is the third largesttrading partner of the US). As the burgeoningtrade and the tremendous success of the China-

US Business Summit proves, the US is a hot des-tination for Chinese entrepreneurs who are look-ing for investment opportunities.

More than a hundred qualified Chinese inves-tors are expected to take part and 75 percent ofthem are returning visitors. The China-US Busi-ness Summit is co-hosted by the Minority Busi-ness Development Agency and the U.S Depart-ment of Commerce. The Office of Business andEconomic Development (California) and the In-ternational Trade Administration have also joinedas partners.

I’m honored to have been invited to moderatea panel of distinguished speakers during thethree-day event at the Millennium Hotel in down-town Los Angeles. Project presentations, boothdisplays and forums will be held so that US spon-sors can present their business proposals to theChinese investors.

The organizers will also be providingmatchmaking services, where they will find quali-fied targets for US sponsors. (Attending tradeshows in China can be expensive, so the China-US Business Summit is a good forum for US busi-nesses to reach out to Chinese investors at a re-duced cost.)

For more information on the summit, pleasephone the Chamber at 626-286-3101 or visit theWeb site China-US Business Summit atwww.chinaussummit.org.

Home prices in the Califor-nia Housing market have beenshowing double-digit year-over-year gains for the past yearand a half as of the end of 2013.

According to the CaliforniaAssociation of Realtors(C.A.R.), the statewide medianprice of existing single-familyhomes has increased by morethan 10% on a year-to-year ba-sis for 18 consecutive monthsand the annual median price for2013 jumped 27.5% from 2012.

While the growth rate inhome prices appears to be slow-ing down as the annual pricegain dipped below 20% for thefirst time since September 2012,California home sellers remainconfident about repurchasingas general economic conditionsto improve.

Results from the C.A.R. 2013Survey of Home Sellers showthat more than two-thirds (69%) of home sellers in 2013 pur-chased a home after selling theirprevious residence.

That’s a significant jumpfrom 2012, when less than halfof all sellers (47%) repurchased

another home, and it was morethan five times higher than theshare of sellers who repur-chased in 2011.

Many sellers decided to buyanother home instead of rent-ing partly because they weremore confident about futurehome prices.

Two out of five sellers (43%)thought home prices would goup in one year, while only 9%believed so in 2012.

For those sellers who choseto rent instead of buy in 2013,70% planned to buy anotherhome, a jump from 22% whoplanned to buy another homein 2012. Reasons for not buy-ing were credit problems(25%), insufficient down pay-

ment (25%) and more afford-able to rent (24 %).

Sellers still have reasons to beoptimistic about the housingmarket, despite a slowdown insales at the end of 2013.

The general economicgrowth may not be robust butshould remain solid in 2014.

While interest rates are ex-pected to climb, the averagefixed rate should hover around5% for most of 2014 and is stillconsidered low by historicalstandards.

According to C.A.R., theCalifornia median price is notexpected to record anotherdouble-digit annual gain in2014, but projects prices to in-crease a solid 6% for the year.

NOTE: Joe Walker’s article on the closing of Casadel Rey (“Casa del Rey to say goodbye after 41years,” Temple City Life, February 2014) movedreader James A. Ponnet, a Temple City resident for60 years, to submit this column on why it is so im-portant to shop local and support your favoriteTemple City businesses.By James A. Ponnet

My mom and dad used to ride the red electriccars to Temple City from Lincoln Heights in LosAngeles to see a movie at the Art Deco TempleTheater movie house.

The red electric cars came to the Library Parkand City Hall, then turned around and headedback to Los Angeles.

I arrived here as a two-year-old and loved ev-erything that the city had, and still has, to offer: asafe environment, good schools and a small townatmosphere reminiscent of The Andy GriffithShow’s Mayberry R.F.D.

Casa del Rey announced its closing after 41 years of serving Temple City residents.

CASA DEL REY: Thanks for the MemoriesTemple City resident shares happy memories of Casa del Rey

But we especially enjoyed dining at Casa delRey whose owners Ed and Dana Rey were alwaysvery friendly and very glad to see our family onthe many occasions we enjoyed the Mexican fooddishes and very good drinks.

What was nice about Casa del Rey was the at-mosphere of being in the Mission in San Gabrielor perhaps somewhere along the California coast.

The Spanish tile roof capped lovely art in therestaurant: decorative tiles, cactus, stained glasswindows of a Mission with a fountain, and a manresting under his sombrero.

The overstuffed booths and tables made it verycomfortable. It had charm and personality be-cause everyone that worked there was veryfriendly, happy and helpful.

To me it’s a sad day to see it leave and we willmiss your presence in our beautiful town ofTemple City. Vaya con Dios, Casa del Rey.

Honoringthose whoprotect us24/7/365

By Monique WeilandThe Blue Star Banner Pro-

gram recognizes two new mem-bers to our roster of militarypersonnel connected to TempleCity: Justin Chavez joined theUS Marine Corp and Kelvin Lijoined the Navy.

Another officer with ties toTemple City, Major NathanAlfano, grandson of PhyllisAlfano, received one of the BlueStar Christmas boxes and calledSharon Johnson to let her knowhow much he appreciated itscontents, especially the hand-made cards from Cloverly andEmperor Elementary schools.

He asked Ms. Johnson to callthe schools to thank them fortheir creative cards and notesand to let them know howmuch he enjoyed them andtheir talents. Major Alfano pre-sented the Blue Star BannerProgram with a special Ameri-can flag that had been flown

Blue Star group salutes Justin Chavez, Kevin Li

aboard an MC 138 CombatTalon II during a mission origi-nating from a base in Afghani-stan; all returned home safelythat day. The flag came toTemple City with a certificate ofappreciation for the Blue StarBanner program which is ondisplay during the semi-annualrecognition dinners.

It becomes a family affairwhen a son, daughter, or grand-children join a branch of themilitary; it binds them in patri-otic pride, worry for their as-

signment, and an outpouring oflove and respect for their com-mitment to our freedom. It canbe a family tradition as in thecase of Derek Goodwin whochose to join the Marines be-cause his step-father, JimLaBerthon, had been a Marine.

If you are interested in sup-porting the Blue Star Bannerprogram, upcoming events in-clude the annual rummage salein May and program in June. For more information, contactMs. Johnson at 626-285-5852.

Smiles for LifeWhen teeth-whitening

débuted back around 1990, wetried it out on friends, family, and team members (Shucks, most of mi famiglia had alreadysurvived my early clinical for-ays in dental school.)

And yeah, at first, I thoughtteeth-whitening was pretty su-perficial stuff. But before long,I changed my mind. Teeth-whitening was a slam-dunk; itworked and it was safe.

I had no idea where whiter, brighter smiles would lead. Butbecause of teeth-whitening, wedetected oral pre-cancers, diag-nosed periodontal disease, andscreened for hypertension.

Patients reconnected withoral health; we even saved a fewlives. But we were clueless abouthow many lives we could touch.

March 1 begins our sixteenthyear with Smiles for Life (SFL.)With the support of CrownCouncil and Ultradent Prod-ucts, through June, we’ll be pro-viding teeth-whitening for pa-tients at reduced fees with allthe proceeds going to charityand helping sick, disabled, anddisadvantaged children.

Since 1998, Crown Councilpractices have raised more than$30 million.

Today, half of the funds aredistributed through the CrownCouncil to charitable organiza-tions like St. Jude Children’sResearch Hospital and KidsCancer Care Foundation. Andthe other half of the proceedsgo to a local organization cho-sen by the participating dentalpractice.

This year, we’ll be looking tocreate whiter, brighter, flashiersmiles while we raise funds forour own local/national/globaltreasure, City of Hope.

In 2013, our practice lost thelaughter, spirit, and love ofsome amazing friends and fam-ily. We do hold a grudge.

And what better ally existsthan the City of Hope whenholding cancer accountable?

Please give yourself theSoCal smile you deserve. Andwhy not give yourself some-thing fulfilling to smile about?

To connect with a participat-ing dental practice, pleasephone us at 626-285-3161 orCrown Council at 800-276-9658.

Public asked to supportnew band uniforms forPride of Temple CityBy Helen Marston

When the familiar voices of Bob Eubanks andStephanie Edwards announce the stunning floats andmusical bands next year, get ready to hear “Temple City”because the Pride of Temple City, the TCHS MarchingBand and Pageantry Corps will be one of 24 bands to

march in the 2015 Rose Parade. While travel costs will be low

for the band members and sup-port staff due to the close prox-imity of our City and Pasadena, the band is seeking donationsto wear uniforms ready for aworldwide audience and othercosts associated with perform-ing.

As one of the many moms who have labored to fitthe current 12-year-old uniforms to students each sum-mer for the past few years, I know firsthand the terriblecondition they are in (most are literally held togetherwith safety pins). It had become necessary to bring ex-tra uniforms to events because the material has gottenso thin that they rip while a student is performing, butnow there are no more extra uniforms. New modestuniforms run $300 each, so the cost for 265 band andpageantry members is a whopping $79,500.

The problem is compounded by the fact that theband needs more than just uniforms. They need to re-pair and purchase new parts for instruments loaned outto hundreds of students who did not have their own. Insome cases, a few new instruments need to be purchasedtoo. Other costs include bus transportation to practicelocations as well as the big day itself and, of course, foodand hydration for the students during practice and the5.5 mile parade march in hot uniforms and carryinginstruments.

The Pride of Temple City, the Temple City High School Marching Band and Pageantry Corps, serves the community inmany ways, including marching in the Camellia Festival Parade on Feb. 22, the annual Christmas Parade, and manyother public performances as well as being ambassadors for the city in parades and public concerts in the city andthroughout the San Gabriel Valley.

My husband and I have donated $5,000 and are bud-geting another $5,000 donation. I am also donating 10%of net commissions earned from my real estate busi-ness. Learn more about how you can donate or helpout at www.TCHSMusic.com. The band’s site is under con-struction and will be updated frequently, so you canalso contact me directly at [email protected] phone 626 353-9665.

It is a great honor and privilege for the band to marchon a global stage and represent our great city. Help us

give them everything they need to do Temple Cityproud.

Helen Chen Marston is vice president of the EmperorPTA and band booster of Temple City High School. Whenshe is not raising funds for the band, Ms. Chen Marstonserves as director of West San Gabriel Valley Associationof Realtors and was recently accepted as the director ofthe California Association of Realtors and as the vice chairof Legislative Committee in WSGVAR. She serves as theirliaison to the City of Temple City.
