Melbourne Branch Odyssey 7 - 9 October 2016

After much planning and anticipation the day finally arrived. We were blessed with good riding weather and a small group met Kris andme at Lilydale for the ride up to the Odyssey at Nagambie. We headed north up the tree lined Castella Street past the old theatre, madeour way past Yarra Glen and on up the Melba Highway to Glenburn. We then turned off the highway and went through Flowerdale andStrath Creek before stopping at the lookout above Murchison Gap for a short rest and a photo opportunity. Then it was on past themotorcycle complex into Broadford for morning tea at the bakery.

After a leisurely break and chat we headed due north out of town along Sugarloaf Creek Road to Hilldene, went under the Hume Freewayand then turned up Northwood Road before Seymour. We continued north past Mitchelton Winery and several horse studs beforearriving at our destination in Nagambie without encountering one traffic light for the entire trip.

We checked in, sorted our gear and then got down to the serious business of enjoying ourselves. We walked around, visited variousattendees setting up tents, trailers towed by bikes and some whohad brought caravans and exchanged lies and greetings. Theresort sites were much damper underfoot than normal after ourrecent heavy rains. By 6.00 pm we congregated at the BBQfacilities beside the convention hall and a large group of us had aself catered BBQ dinner and enjoyed the camaraderie. The nightpassed quickly and we all retired to our assorted accommodation.

Saturday morning was bright and clear with some lovely reflectionson the rather swollen river. The on site café had been set up for awedding that evening so those that wanted a cooked breakfasthad to make do with the verandas outside the café and thatarrangement was a bit cooler than ideal. Around 0900 I wasdisturbed by the sound of a number of bikes arriving and went outand met Paul Butler with a group of Ulysseans from areas such asfar afield as Echuca and Rochester who were on their way to theVictorian Breakfast Club meeting at Yea. Convivial banter was exchanged and then they headed off. A large number of the Odysseyattendees had decided to go on a river cruise from the resort which involved a visit to two wineries - Mitchelton and Tahbilk.

A smallish group of us then assembled outside the venue and headed off on the bikes shortly after 10.00. We headed across the flatsthrough Locksley and on to Longwood where we turned right past the White Hart Hotel. Many of the spoon drains beside the road werestill very full of water and evidence of the recent flooding was everywhere but didn’t actually affect us despite numerous “water over

road”signs. Once through Longwood, we crossed the Hume Freeway, headed south and climbed thelovely hills through an assortment of varied bends and the odd bump towards Ruffy. Some of thescenery and granite rocks in the area were quite spectacular after the earlier flat lands. We thenskirted Ruffy, turned left and descended more interesting curves and roads to Yarck where we stoppedfor morning tea and the exchange of more lies. While relaxing there, a guy arrived on a Ural outfit andput on a very skilled and entertaining demonstration of reversing briskly into a parking bay at the café.I’m not into sidecars but it was great to behold.

Once relaxed and refreshed, we mounted up again and headed up the highway to Merton where weturned left and headed north. I thoroughly enjoyed the road with its great mix of smooth surface andtight bends as we crossed the mountain range again. Even the short 60 KPH zone was reasonable forthe conditions. We then turned right and headed towards Strathbogie along a rather bumpy bitumensection and stopped briefly at Polly McQuinn Weir to take in the view and get some photos. Again, due torecent floods water was gushing over the weir and flowing into the swimming hole at a strong rate. Thenit was on through Strathbogie and into Euroa where we stopped for lunch at the local bakery.

After that it was basically a transport section across the flats to Murchison and at one stage we werepassed by a rider on a BMW K1600 GT. I later found out it was yet another Ulyssean –Max who hadbeen to the VBC meeting at Yea and was on his way home. We crossed the girder bridge intoMurchison and after almost failing a couple of navigational challenges I found the road south pastirrigation channels and we stopped at Kirwans Bridge for a short break and to take in the scenery. Wethen continued into Nagambie and went our separate ways. I stopped for my first fuel since beforestarting the ride.

That evening we assembled in the convention centre at the resort, dinner was served and we thenenjoyed the music put on by our live entertainers Gary and June, danced and generally enjoyed ourselves. We conducted a raffle whichincluded prizes supplied by the three branch sponsors –Andy Strapz, Bikemart and BM Motorcycles Ringwood. The night flew by all tooquickly. I thoroughly enjoyed the camaraderie and I believe many others did too. We had 50 people for dinner including members fromthe ACT, various locations in NSW, South Australia, numerous locations throughout Victoria plus Melbourne Branch members.

Sunday arrived all too quickly, breakfast was had by some outside the café and then it was time for farewells. Some stayed an extranight but Kris and I had things to do on Monday morning so it was back on the bike and head home with a forecast of afternoon rain.We had a good run down to Tallarook and then we followed the Goulburn Valley Highway into Yea where we stopped for a rest and somerefreshment. Then it was on down the Melba and the wind really got quite violent as we descended towards Dixons Creek from Mt Slide.Lots of trees were down and they looked quite ominous the way they were waving about above our heads in the wind. We made it homesafely but we later heard of others who had really suffered in the storm. I later heard from some members from Gippsland who hadstopped at Healesville on their way home. Their efforts to get a meal were to no avail as the entire town had lost power.

To all who came –Thank you, you made it a great weekend.

A well-earned break

Enjoying the river cruise

Travelling The Eildon - Jamieson Road

When I planned to do this ride I thought it may have been too close to the end of winter considering we were to traverse the Eildon-

Jamieson Road which is 61 kilometres of bends, many of them hairpins, up and down over the hills and through the forest. The chance of

storms overnight at this time of year and forest debris on the road can make the going quite difficult. As it turned out we rode in bright

sunshine on a mostly dry road with some gravel and debris which had washed onto the road in the recent heavy rain, but nothing we

could not handle.

Ten riders including me turned up at Lilydale which was quite pleasing considering Andrew Kennedy had taken a group on his long

weekend ride to the west, daylight saving had just started this morning and the Grand Final was yesterday so some would be recovering.

We had Ron, Vince, Rick, two Brians, Greg, Les, Steve and Roger who left us at Eildon due to family commitments, plus me of course.

Out from Lilydale and direct up the Maroondah Hwy to Healesville then onto the Black Spur. A little way up the spur we were brought to a

virtual stop by the Police and SES. The cops managing traffic and the SES cutting up and removing an extremely large tree which must

have fallen an hour or two earlier. They did not slow us down much however and we continued over the Spur past Narbethong and Buxton

to Taggerty where we turned right. This was the first turn requiring corner marking for the trip so I think I may have broken the record for

the longest start to a ride without a corner being marked.

On to Thornton and down the front road to Eildon where we stopped for morning tea at the bakery. We met another group of bikes here

who were from western Melbourne and were also heading over the Jamieson Road; but then to Kevington for lunch at the famous

“Kevington Hilton”. Maybe that is an idea for a future ride?

After being watered and relieved we rode over the top of the dam wall and down to the Jamieson turnoff, with a stop at the scenic lookout

on top of the hill. What can I say about this road except that I think it is a strong candidate for the best road for motorbikes in Victoria. It is

as described earlier and whilst requiring care due to the tight corners and lack of advisory speed signs it is a joy to ride. Some of our

group had not ridden this road before and they seemed pretty well pleased. I first rode this route in 1964 when it was dirt and gravel and

much more difficult. On that occasion I lost it when my front wheel decided to stop suddenly in a large pothole full of dust which made it

look like the road surface. Only a few bruises and no harm done but I never rode it again until it was sealed a few years ago.

On exiting the winding road we turned left and headed to Mansfield through some high-speed curves for lunch where we arrived a bit

after 1.30pm.

It was not a particularly long ride, 197 klms from Lilydale to Mansfield but as we crossed the Spur and the Eildon-Jamieson Road where

the average speed is quite slow, we were at lunch a little later than usual with still a couple of hours to go to home from there.

Thanks to everyone who joined the ride and to Brian for assuming TEC duties and I hope you all enjoyed the day out.

A Ride up to the Snowy Mountains –November 2016The ride up

There is an annual charity ride known as the Snowy Ride which takes place every November in the Snowy Mountains of NSW. Based inThredbo there are rides to lots of towns in the region with areas in each town set aside for motorcycle activities. A total of 2,207 ridersand pillions from all states attended this year. The ride raises money for the Steven Walter Children’s Cancer Foundation to aid researchand is organised by the Walter family who lost their son to this insidious disease at the tender age of 19 after an eight year battle withEwings Sarcoma. This year was the 16th ride and raised in excess of $250,000 for research. Go to http://www.snowyride.org.au/ if youwant more details and perhaps to get some ideas for joining next year’s ride. This year Roger Foot, who had done the ride previously, set about organising a group from Melbourne Ulysses to participate. As well as

Roger there were Sam Bateman, Stewart Tepe, Mick Hedger and myself, Pat Ryan making

a total of five in our group.

Roger and Mick left from the north of Melbourne and met Sam and Stewart, who went up

through Yarra Glen, at Yea around 9am. Pat was already at Jamieson so he met the rest of

the group at Mansfield around 10.30am where we had a break, fuelled up and headed off

in glorious weather. Despite the forecast we experienced good weather for the whole trip

with no rain or snow but it was a bit cold at times and high winds were a nuisance

especially in the upper levels of the mountain ranges we traversed.

The plan was to go up through Whitfield then to Myrtleford and over the top of Falls Creekto Omeo. Plans of course are only an indication of what may happen and in this case it didnot! Road closure of the Bogong High Plains Road past Falls Creek precluded this, soinstead from Myrtleford we headed to Bright then up Mt Hotham via Harrietville. Some niceriding from Mansfield to Whitfield over the winding road and then the sweeping high speedbends of the King Valley to Oxley. Fromthere to Myrtleford has a few relativelystraight sections but winds enough to be

interesting. Similarly from Myrtleford to Bright is a relative cruise but then the ascent ofMt Hotham is more challenging with lots of gear changes and hard braking as wenegotiated the tight turns.

From the top of Hotham the run down through Dinner Plain to Omeo consists mainly of

sweeping bends where we sped along getting some relief from the tight turns on the way

up. We stopped for a great view over Omeo to Mt Kosciuzko in the distance from the

lookout.

Passing Omeo we turned for Mitta Mitta, our destination for the Thursday night where we

had booked into the pub. The roads were not done with us just yet however and this road

is 100 kilometres of the tightest and most unrelenting turns you could find anywhere so

we arrived after a big day a little tired and in need of a beer!

The rooms here are basic but clean as you would expect in a country pub and the mealsare much better than we had hoped. Soft Shell Crab was on the menu as was Kassler aswell as the usual suspects so we were all well fed. The manager had only taken over thepub a couple of weeks earlier and seemed to be pretty well experienced and was a great“Mine Host”. The cook was a bit more interesting and seemed a bit prone to error as he kept bringing the wrong meals to the wrongpeople. All was well in the end and our meals were really good. One of Sam’s soft shell crabs fell (or was that jumped) off his plate whenit was delivered and he was promised some more which never eventuated. We were all offered ice cream instead so all was not lost. Wedubbed the cook “Manuel”in memory of John Cleese’s offsider in Faulty Towers due to his bumbling –but he could cook!

The next morning we were all up bright and early and ready for another big ride. On the way around 8.30am, we travelled on good

winding roads at a steady speed through Tallangatta, Koetong and Corryong to Khancoban where things got interesting again. It is 67

kms from Khancoban to Thredbo but it took us about an hour and a half. There are ceaseless bends, most with 30 or 35kph warning

signs, with quite a sprinkling of 10kph and 15kph ones mixed in for good measure. Combine that with no centreline and the odd car or

4wd coming around the corner on the wrong side and you get an interesting and challenging ride.

The trip up from Melbourne looks quite circuitous on the map but it is necessary to wind a bit as there are not a lot of roads through themountains to choose from in any case. We all enjoyed the challenge and the magnificent scenery and would not have missed it forquids.

Conquering The Switchbacks From Dandenong to Pakenham

With a light drizzle abating to cloud with occasional bursts of sunshine, 18 riders set off following yours truly, GregGleason on one of his favourite rides. Collecting 2 Shearwater Branch members along the way, plus David (wholives in Olinda) who joined us at Woori Yallock, left us with a group of 18 to ride down the freeway to Beaconsfield, becoming 21 along the way. Our first (and only) casualty occurred at the start line - a tyre that was avoiding theeconomics of inflation by staying deflated!!

After a short break, we made Beaconsfield, rode up over Upper Beaconsfield almost to Emerald before runningdown the full length of the pretty (and curvy) Paternoster Road to reach Cockatoo from the south. A quick runto Woori Yallock saw the Shearwater boys join in - the coffee break at the award winning Woori Yallock bakery wasjustification in itself for the ride - great coffee and snacks!! A detour around Dalry Road brought us more hillsscenery!! With the crows battling the ibis in a farm near Don Road, we pushed on to Launching Place, and thenveered left down the road to Gembrook, over the spectacular hills of the Kirth Kiln National Park.

More curvy roads to within 7 or 8 km from Pakenham and the occasional blue Commodore ute on our side of theroad, but we slipped peacefully into Pakenham for lunch. A few took an early mark, the intention being to get homein time to hit the Moto Expo Bike Show at the Showgrounds. An awesome array of bikes, but in retrospect, stayingwith the majority for lunch might have been a better idea!!!

So there it was!! A few of my pet roads, and all so different - switchbacks, fast kinks, sweepers, rutty hairpins, reverse cambers - the lot and all in 3 hours of riding.

Thanks for coming - hope you enjoyed it!!

Good Food and Company Lilydale to Yea

The weather bureau seemed to have it right, starting with a pleasant morning with the promise of a sunny afternoon. Approximatelythirteen riders and one special pillion (Kris Cook) departed Lilydale and John took us on all sorts of roads turning left and right, right andleft before turning onto Edwards Road and heading off out of the Sunday morning traffic.

We turned on to Jumping Creek Road, riding through leafy Wonga Park and then onto Warrandyte Road which took us through treedKangaroo Ground towards Panton Hill then Hurstbridge. From there we enjoyed a run on some nice roads through a place I’ve neverheard of –Nutfield. John always manages to come up with a surprise road here and there.

From there we travelled along Arthurs Creek Road before taking another few turns and roads, heading towards Heathcote Junction andinto Wandong for morning tea. Some of us had our own morning tea under the gazebo which was surrounded by a lovely rose gardenwhile others wandered across the road to the bakery for coffee. The coffee was great and I had one of the best mince pies I’ve had for along time (well –at least since last Christmas anyway).

From Wandong we rode along a nice road which ran parallel to the highway, heading towards Tallarook and Trawool. After a while we hitthe highway and John turned towards Seymour and then turned off again, taking the winding ride on Highlands Road (and there wasanother road in there somewhere –Kobyboyn Road) then Ghin Ghin Road and into to Yea.

Yea is a popular stop for travellers –two wheel and four wheel - and there were quite a few bikes parked along the main road with ridersenjoying a drink at one of the picnic tables in the sun or on the grass under the shade of the trees in the centre of town. Most of us didlikewise, enjoying a chat about the day’s ride.

On getting ready to leave Yea, a few of our group followed John who intended to take a run through Murrindindi for a few more curvesbefore heading home. For me, I took the run straight back home along the main road, thoroughly enjoying what was left of a warm, sunny and perfect riding day.

Another great day’s ride, thanks John. Thanks also to Samuel for tail end Charlie duties.

The East Malvern RSL serves bistro meals at reasonable prices and also offers seniors’deals. Drinks can be purchased from the bar.

If you haven’t been to one of our social night get-togethers for a while, consider giving this venue some thought. Come along and catch

up on all the news and enjoy the company of your fellow Ulysseans. What makes these nights special is the camaraderie and friend-

ship enjoyed by all who attend with much laughter and frivolity emanating from the various groups and tables. For new chums

and first timers, introductions are made in the normal Ulyssean manner which ensures that nobody is left standing on the outer

and everyone is made to feel welcome.

Join the chatter about motorbikes and bike trips, travel in general, and the usual odd joke etc. Someone always seems to have

an Australian Road Atlas which is often referred to and it is heartening to note that some members don't mind a little embellish-

ment to make their story more interesting. One should never let the facts stand in the way of delivering a good punch line or

yarn!

These nights are not to be missed so pencil them into your social calendar and come along and enjoy the fun.

Meet for a Saturday Morning Coffee at
