Where To With The Spare Tyre?

Do you, dear reader, of this quarterly newsletter get any worthwhile value from the magazine?

We have a robust website, I believe, the envy of other branches and recently your committee has

established a Facebook presence that enhances communication with all participating members.

Today ride reports, photographs, upcoming events, ride calendars and all other manner of

information are available at a, "Click," of the button.

With this issue of the Tyre, as has occurred over recent years, there is a replication of news and

reports already available from the above alternatives. However, receipt of ride reports by the

editor has effectively stopped making the Tyre entirely reliant upon the website. As well our

magazine is issued in 'Hard Copy,' form to three members only! This is a far cry from the pre-

internet age where the magazine was the, "Lifeblood," of the branch with the quarterly issue

bringing the reports and upcoming events to its branch members. Where members grouped

around a table of wine and nibbles to envelope and address the mail to eager readers, where a

ride reporter was nominated prior to the start of each ride to prepare his report for the Spare Tyre.

This is what the branch was, not what the branch is today.

In the era of 4G and upcoming 5G systems the editor argues that by approaching these remaining

readers on the possible demise of the Spare Tyre together with some voluntary training to build

their confidence to access the, branch website for the latest branch news would allow the

retirement of the newsletter with dignity.

Alternatively, adding new material of interest to riders, suggested by members or even, ‘God

forbid!’your editor (it could be a link to a website article, newspaper, other magazines etc…) that

together with ride reports (republished from the website) and possible additional committee input

may enliven and make the newsletter more unique.

But, you, the member, have the final say and must consider, "Do I want to continue to receive the

Spare Tyre and if so. What do I want out of it that I do not get from our website and Facebook?"

Your response to these questions and your suggestions, if any, are needed to guide the editor and

the committee on this matter. So, drop me a line and help us set the direction should there be

one.

We say farewell to another rider, Ben Probin (10288) who passed away on 29

September 2019. I first met Ben on a cold wintry 2006 Sunday ride that had a

foggy lunch at the Noojee hotel. He came across as reserved, a listener and the

proud owner of a red Gold Wing. He had a strong handshake and you knew this

was a man used to hard work.

Over the following years gradually one got to know something of the man, a

builder by trade and even though he was well past retirement age continued in

his trade. He was a keen traveller quietly slipping out of Australia he would visit

the more exotic countries and caused quite a stir when some years ago

returning with a young bride. Sadly, this marriage would not last but it did show

that Ben had a youthful streak not dimmed by age.

Ben's love of riding his beloved Gold Wing also included him rising to President

of the Goldwing Club of Australia. His determination to continue his riding was

recalled when some years past Ben turned up at our annual Swanpool camp in

the early evening. He stopped near my tent that was established near a bend

that turned a somewhat sharpish uphill left to, "Catch up," which included his

general understatement that he hadn't been too well.

Starting the machine he attempted continuation towards his cabin, but the rise

and the turn of the road were having none of this. With a jerk and a spit of

gravel from the rear the red machine lurched into the bend, stalled and started

to roll back with the rider wide-eyed and desperate. All around rushed to the

machine to hold it up. Ben, managed to restart and with all of his helpers was

able to scrabble up the hill and to safety.

This was I believe the start of his long battle with its ups and downs. But Ben

would keep turning up on his beloved machine at different events My last ride

with Ben was to Bob Tate's celebration in Alexandria (2016) a few years back.

At the end of the presentation as T.E.C. I followed behind Ben as we wended our

way towards Melbourne. Ben, glided along in the late afternoon's light on his

beloved Honda with dappled wintry sunlight flashing off the panels. He was

enjoying his ride.

Farewell Ben Probin.

Present for a While:The Hon. Vince Green, Ulysses Member for Mernda –V Strom (or Suzuki DL1000 –never surewhich) –Vince had surgery recently and his helmet was pressing on sensitive facial bits andpieces!! Wisely, he headed for home at the start point. See you back soon Vince!!

The Theme:Roger’s briefing started as “follow me”, but then included his hidden theme –we all had to guess bymorning tea. Colin “lousy road surfaces?”, Greg –“getting held up behind slow moving cars?”. Itwas, in fact, “gorges of the outer north”and we saw as good as it gets!!

The Ride:We rode west down Donnybrook Road towards Mickleham, then up the Kongaderra Road throughOaklands Junction and on to the Lancefield Road. We then went south and looped back throughWildwood, to the Bulla Gorge (the first of many). We headed west to Toolern Vale via Diggers Rest, and then north to Gisborne for morning tea. Four gorges, three one lane bridges (every one withoncoming traffic, and it was pretty clear what Roger’s theme was!!From Gisborne we headed south again to take in the views from Mt Gisborne Rd, and then a stretchof high quality unsealed Black Hill Rd, and back to Diggers Rest. Then a little stint on the CalderFreeway, past the Sunbury turnoff, and then off at Mundy Road to Blind Creek. From there, north toRiddell’s Creek then east through Bolinda to Darraweit Guim and across to Wallan. An intelligentride with great roads and interesting landmarks –well done Roger. The ride home was punctuated with Greg needing to re fasten his helmet strap on the freeway onramp!! Not great, but an otherwise quiet trip home. Roger & Greg fuelled up at Cooper Street –atimely leg stretch at the right time of the day.

The Refreshments:Two great choices –the artisan bakery in Gisborne and the Pretty Sally Bakehouse in Wallan!! Andwith my partner’s name being Sally, that photo of their sign was inevitable (hey –don’t discountbrownie points!!)

Appreciation:

Thanks must go to Roger –the purveyor of the finest roads in the north!! However, our rides now

have themes? Quite nervous and uncertain about my next ride and its theme!! “Crap road choices”,

“lack of imagination”, “too many freeways”, “sorry I should have pointed out that speed

camera”? The mind boggles……

SNOW AND ICE CAN'T STOP THESE RIDERS

With a week of true winter weather and near-record snowfalls this ride was always going to separate themen from the boys, or should that read the sheep from the goats? The day dawned with photos sentfrom friends in the Woodend and Kyneton districts, the planned route for the ride, showing snow ontheir paddocks. So it was on with the thermals and suit liners and off to see if anyone was silly enough tocome along! It was 5 degrees at Kalkallo and in the event there were 2 takers, Big Dave and recently joined memberJohn Francis. We discussed simply going home but posting a ride report of valiant derring-do, but in theevent decided on a truncated single-leg ride from Kalkallo to Bacchus Marsh with a revised route stayingsouth of the Macedon Ranges. Our new route incorporated Sunbury, Riddells Creek and then on to Gisborne where we were greetedwith snow on the cars and gardens. A quick blast down the Calder lost us some altitude and we turnedright at Couangalt Rd, and hence via Toolern Vale to Bacchus Marsh. The temperature remained chillythroughout but we enjoyed bursts of sunshine along with a little rain.

After a leisurely early lunch Dave decided to nose around Bacchus Marsh while John and I hit the

Western Hwy for a quick ride home which was mostly sunny with dry roads. Thanks to Dave and John

for making the effort, and John for the photo. I will reschedule the original ride to a date later in the

year.

The Roads:"Yo Big Dave!!!" Well done for a great ride –his first? Nobody noticed. Need more of these…Off from Kalkallo, we cut left at Donnybrook to Nutfield’s “hidden secret!" So few of us go there. But,it’s so good!! Across to St Andrew’s was great and St Andrew’s to Kinglake was even better!! Well half-way till a few trucks got in the way. Down the hill to Toolangi, Myers Creek and Healesville for awelcome snack. The Spur to Marysville and it was all over too soon.

The Camaraderie:Seems it doesn’t stop when the finish flag falls!! The Hon Vince Green, Ulysses Member for Merndainvited Stewart, Greg and Jeff to try the new “Yarck Giddy Goat Café branch“at Yea!!None of us wereinterested, but then again….. OK - the Alex Road, Molesworth, Whanveregan Road - and nobody wasspeeding (much)……..

And For Dessert:Our favourite northern son went home alone (I bet he never did that very often in his youth) andStewart, Greg and Jeff played leapfrog with the endless cars on the Yarra Glen Road!!

What a great day!! Thanks again Big Dave!!

Thanks too to Ian Monk (on a very swish gold BMW) as Tail End Charlie and to all who came along!! Tomy untrained eye, Robert appeared to have his very classy video camera in harness!! Everyone take adeep breath and say "cheese" ....... by the way, which is my "good side"?

Social Events

The Melbourne Branch hosts one informal Social Night on the:

3rd Friday of each month.

Commences from 6.00 PM

The East Malvern RSL, Stanley Grose Drive, East Malvern, (Melway 60 A12)

The East Malvern RSL serves bistro meals at reasonable prices and also offers seniors’deals. Drinks can be purchased from the bar.

If you haven’t been to one of our social night get-togethers for a while, consider giving this venue some thought. Come along and catch

up on all the news and enjoy the company of your fellow Ulysseans. What makes these nights special is the camaraderie and friend-

ship enjoyed by all who attend with much laughter and frivolity emanating from the various groups and tables. For new chums

and first timers, introductions are made in the normal Ulyssean manner which ensures that nobody is left standing on the outer

and everyone is made to feel welcome.

Join the chatter about motorbikes and bike trips, travel in general, and the usual odd joke etc. Someone always seems to have

an Australian Road Atlas which is often referred to and it is heartening to note that some members don't mind a little embellish-

ment to make their story more interesting. One should never let the facts stand in the way of delivering a good punch line or

yarn!

These nights are not to be missed so pencil them into your social calendar and come along and enjoy the fun.
