COURSE DESCRIPTION

Objectives of Course This course is a continuation of SPA 202. Emphasis is placed on learning complex grammatical structures, as well as on a wide variety of communication tasks that are used in speaking, writing, reading, and listening. Emphasis is also placed on the study of Spanish literature, which is used to enhance the student's linguistic ability, and to draw them into a greater cultural understanding of the people whose language they are learning.

Tests & Quizzes All tests and quizzes are on the course syllabus. In the event that you are absent on the day of a quiz, see Nancy to make arrangements to make it up. The late work policy will apply.

Late Work Policy

All work is due on the date indicated on the course syllabus during the scheduled class meeting time. Late work will be marked down 5% for each day (includes weekdays and weekends) that the work is turned in after the due date. After two weeks have passed, the work will no longer be accepted and the grade will remain a zero. Early work is always accepted. Assignments may be emailed to me at [email protected]. Work that is completed or turned in on the due date, but after the class has met for the day will be counted as one day late with a reduction of 5%. This late work policy applies to all graded work in this course: quizzes, homework, etc. If you have a serious emergency, please see me to make special arrangements.

Grading

Tests & Quizzes 50%

Class Participation 10%

Grades are posted weekly online at the Passport site of LTCC. Check your grade on a weekly basis. If there is an error in your grade, please notify Nancy as soon as possible. Grading philosophy: if you just answer a question or assignment with a short answer, the grade will be a "C." To receive a "B" the answer must be very complete, full sentences, well written. A grade of an "A" is given to assignments that are truly above what is required, give extra information, include your opinion, show that your deserve an outstanding grade on the assignment. A = 90-100%; B = 80-89%; C = 70-79%; D = 60-69%; F = below 60%

Class Participation

Class participation is an important part of the grade. Ten points will be given for each class meeting. Students are automatically excused from two (2) class meetings. If absent, the student is responsible for making up all work according to the class syllabus and the late work policy. Five (5) points will be deducted if when students leave early or come to class late. Oral activities will be part of class participation. Students will speak Spanish during the activities and total participation points will depend on the involvement and use of Spanish in class.

Homework

Students should plan to spend ten hours a week studying vocabulary and grammar from the text, as well as reading the assigned pages from the play Don Juan Tenorio. Homework includes practicing speaking Spanish with native speakers. All material on the course syllabus should be studied at home as well. An ongoing homework assignment is rereading the assigned chapters in Don Juan Tenorio that have been read in class. There will not be time in class to read the entire work. Therefore, it is expected that students will complete the readings at home and be prepared to discuss the chapters. Translations to our edition of Don Juan is online at: [http://www.ltcconline.net/nbarclay/courses/Spa_203/donjuan/trans.htm]

Oral Presentations Each group will reenact a scene from Don Juan Tenorio. See the attached handout for details. This project is worth 10% of the quarter grade.

Keeping up with the Class Any student needing accommodations should notify the instructor. Students who are having difficulty should notify the instructor as soon as possible.

Tutoring in the Teaching & Learning Center (TLC) Tutorial services are provided at no cost to the student. The schedule of Spanish tutors is available in the TLC, room A250. Arrangements to take tests/quizzes in the TLC are by appointment only. To make an appointment to take a test in the TLC, email [email protected] or call 530-541-4660 x740.

Dropping the Class

Students are responsible for dropping the class. See Admissions & Records for clarification and deadlines.

Web Lesson

Students will use the Internet to research information about José Zorrilla and his drama Don Juan Tenorio. Any student not wishing to use the Internet may see the instructor for an individual project. The Web lesson is online at: [http://www.ltcconline.net/nbarclay/courses/Spa_203/donjuan.htm].

Composition

A composition written in Spanish will be required of each student. The content will focus on major events of the 19

th century in

Spain and José Zorrilla, the author of Don Juan Tenorio. The composition will be started in class. Some class time will be dedicated to editing the compositions. Students will need to revise and complete the compositions at home. The composition is due on the last day of class. Students will read their composition to their classmates.

La Composición El Siglo XIX

Don Juan Tenorio por José Zorrilla

Your composition should contain the following information, at least one paragraph about each of the five topics.

1. ¿Cómo fue el siglo XIX? Una introducción 2. Goya el artista– su vida y obras 3. José Zorrilla, el autor 4. La trama y los personajes de Don Juan Tenorio 5. La conclusión y su opinión (double points)

This composition must be in your own words. Plagiarized work will receive a grade of zero for the project. Keep your use of Spanish at the intermediate level. It is best to express yourself in Spanish, rather than try to write in English first and then translate. Grading will be based on content and grammar. Your conclusion will receive double points, so put some effort into it. If you are absent on days when we work on the composition in class, you are responsible to complete the assignment on your own. Some class time will be allowed to write first drafts and revisions for this composition. If absent, you will need to complete the composition on your own time as homework. This composition is due on the last day of class. You will read your composition to your classmates.

DON JUAN TENORIO Oral Presentations

1. Reenact a scene from the play: For example: En la Hostería del Laurel, enfrente de la casa de doña Ana, en el convento, en la casa de don Juan, en el cementerio, la cena con don Gonzalo

2. Write a script with your group. Practice your lines. If you read your lines, the highest grade possible on the presentation will be a "C." The goal is to speak Spanish, not read it.

3. Each group must turn in one copy of the script before the presentation. 4. Visuals, costumes, props must be used! Be creative. 5. Time: presentations should last between 10 and 15 minutes.

(Individual presentations - 5 minutes) 6. Groups will be formed in class. 7. Some class time for practice will be given in class. 8. If you are not able to work with a group, you may do an individual presentation, such as a

speech by don Juan, doña Inés reading don Juan's love letter, or give us a commentary on a portion of the play.

9. Make sure that you will have time to practice outside of class. Exchange phone numbers with members of your group. Plan a time to practice.

10. If you are absent the day of the presentations, the show will go on. We will have a volunteer read the lines of the person who is absent, so the script is very important.

11. Each participant of your group should have equal speaking parts, don't let one person dominate the scene. It's okay to change the scene a bit from the original to accommodate your needs.

12. If you are absent, you may present your part in the next class meeting, with a reduction of 10% for your grade.

Grading Rubric for Oral Presentation
