aybe your home isn’t a dream home. Mine sure isn’t. And mygardens, not exactly tour quality. Many days, I drive up to my little CapeCod house and sigh at the work-in-progress gardens and the not-yet-done projects that could transform it into something a little dreamier.

Still, on those wonderful occasions when everything’s tidied up — thelaundry put away, the lawn mowed, the gardens weeded — I take pridein showing friends and family around. When a guest comments on abold color choice or a piece of art or how cute my kids’ rooms are or theblooms on the wisteria I planted three years ago, it’s a welcomereminder that all the little improvements I’ve made over the past decadeare adding up.

It’s also a reminder that my home is not a sculpture. It will never bedone and set in stone. It’s an evolving space that changes as my kidsgrow, as my tastes change with the trends, as budgets allow, as whimsoccur.

Our Home & Garden Tour issue reminds me of that, too. There are somany beautiful places and spaces in the Twin Cities — from historic Vic-torians to newfangled energy-efficient houses — all of them somebody’sidea of a dream home and many of them changing from year to year.

It’s hard to keep track of all the tours, so we’ve pulled together ahandy list of top tours in this issue. And if a tour inspires you to makesome changes in your home, our Resource Directory — an expansivelisting of architects, builders, designers, landscapers and so on — canhelp you find businesses to get the job done.

Sincerely,Heidi Raschke

In a nod to shifting priorities, family-friendly

amenities like mother-in-law suites and

elaborate playrooms are becoming more

prominent in new and remodeled homes. But

make no mistake: Opulence is alive and well in

the Twin Cities.

The fall 2010 Parade of Homes includes a

$2.5 million Plymouth “Dream Home” with an

18-foot-high circular study, a full wall fireplace,

a wine room and a 10-foot limestone hearth in

the owner’s suite (it’s not just a master

bedroom anymore). The grandeur continues

outside with an architecturally designed

waterfall and a private dock on Hadley Lake.

Another $1.5 million Dream Home on tour

in Edina features a commercial-grade kitchen,

a private deck off of the vaulted owner’s suite

and a 65-inch 3D TV theater area.

Indoor sport courts, poker rooms, wine

cellars larger than the typical kitchen, hidden

passageways connecting kids’ rooms, home

theaters with no fewer than five TVs and two-

level garages are all luxuries to watch for on

home tours this year.

Still, tour organizers hope to send visitors

away with more than feelings of inadequacy.

The Luxury Home Tour offers these tips on

how to steal $1 million in ideas:

Color combos. Keep an eye out for colors

that pair well together, like tomato puree and

Tiffany blue or burnt mustard and dark roast

coffee. Also consider what the color will be

adjacent to — carpet, wood, tile.

Neutrals. Gray is replacing beige as a soft

neutral.

Mixed woods. You won’t see the same

wood used throughout an entire house. Note

ways to mix and match.

Wall treatments. Wallpaper is back. The

key is to use it as an accent or in small spaces

like a powder bathroom.

Room layout. Think beyond right angles.

The latest look is to place furniture at a

diagonal rather than against the walls.

Kitchen details. The latest must-have trend

in appliances is the built-in furniture look.

(Think armoire-type cabinets that reveal a

state-of-the-art refrigerator.) Pay attention to

tile backsplashes, hardware on cabinets and

drawers, countertop edging - these little

features make a big difference.

Use of mirrors. Need to increase natural

light in a room without adding windows or

lamps? Mirror the natural light. Notice how

mirrors are strategically placed throughout

homes.

Kids’ rooms. You might think you can’t

afford to give your child a room that looks like

it jumped off a magazine page, but note the

basics: carpeting, trim color, layout and the

little details that make it seem nostalgic.

Man caves. A masculine rec room doesn’t

have to scream basement hangout. Skip the

posters of dogs playing poker, mix dark and

light colors and have ample lighting.

Outdoor living spaces. Retractable screens

on three-season porches are becoming

popular. Also note the types of plants, trees

and landscaping.

Allison Kaplan writes about style and shop-

ping for the Pioneer Press. She is a frequent

contributor to Spaces.

Japanese Lantern Lighting FestivalThis family-friendly event pays tribute to Japan’s annual Obon holiday, an

important cultural and family holiday during which ancestral spirits are

said to revisit their families for three days. Families pay their respects at

grave sites and put out offerings of food and drink on a tray before

household altars. They also light lanterns or small fires outside the house

to symbolically guide the souls home. On the last evening of Obon,

lanterns again guide the spirits back to their resting places. The Lantern

Lighting Festival encompasses Japanese tradition through music, dance,

crafts, martial arts and lanterns. Japanese food and dozens of cultural

items will be for sale. The day will culminate at dusk with the main event:

the lantern lighting. Six stone lanterns and floating paper lanterns

throughout the Japanese garden pond and the Frog Pond will create a

vision of peacefulness and harmony to commemorate the dead.
