The soot removal devices are described below: • Oil Guard - EPS - 60 • Puradyn - PFT40 • Luberfiner Z-Guard - LFP9750 • Premo Plus - Lt 30P • Fram X2 Extended Guard Oil Filter – XG3387A
Background
ISO/DIS 23556 Soot Removal Test Method The only standardized test method for evaluating the efficiency of soot removal devices is ISO/DIS 23556. This internationally recognized test method is currently being balloted as a draft ISO standard (DIS). This test method is being designed to incorporate as many “real-world” parameters as practical. Note: Currently there is no standardized method to determine the capacity of soot removal devices. This test method challenges the test soot removal devices with a simulated soot challenge, Mitsubishi DIA Soot Contaminant. The average “soot” particle size is approximately 200-nanometers and is suspended in oil.

The test method uses the latest approved test oil (CI-4) to meet the application, i.e., 10W-30 for automotive or 15W-40 for heavy-duty applications. The test oil temperature is maintained at 105°C. The test runs for 52 hours or until it reaches its terminal differential pressure. Soot samples are obtained and analyzed by TGA every four hours. All the soot removal test filters were evaluated using ISO/DIS 23556 except the Fram X2 Extended Guard Oil Filter.
ISO 4548-12 Full Flow Oil Filter Test Method Another recognized international test method is ISO 4538-12. This method is used to determine the filtration efficiency and capacity of full-flow oil filters. This test method is a standard multi-pass method that challenges the test filter with ISO 12103-A3 medium test dust. Particle count data begins at 4-µm (c) that is much greater than any soot particles. This test method is not valid for soot removal devices. However, in view there is no other standardized capacity and that all the candidate test filters are cartridge type elements, i.e., no centrifugal soot removal devices, this method may provide a qualitative comparison.
Extended Oil Additive Benefits Two of the candidate soot removal devices have different methodologies to reduce the depletion of the oil additive package. The Puradyn system uses encapsulated additive that are time-released to maintain the Total Base Number (TBN). The Luberfiner Z-Guard soot removal device utilizes zinc that reacts with any acids and reduces the acids to CO2 and water. A concentrated acid cocktail was introduced to the test sump every four hours. The TAN and TBN were determined to confirm the acid neutralizing methods performed as advertised.
Scope of Work
ISO/DIS 23556 Each soot removal device was evaluated according to ISO/DIS 23556 to compare the soot removal efficiencies of the five products. In addition to the standard analysis, TBN will be determined for the Puradyn and Luberfiner Z-Guard soot removal devices to establish a baseline for the additive depletion testing
ISO 4548-12 Each soot removal device was evaluated according to ISO 4548-12 to provide a comparison of the capacity of these devices. The efficiency data is not reported as it is not applicable to the application and could provide misleading information.

Additive Depletion Evaluations The Puradyn and Luberfiner Z-Guard soot removal devices were evaluated according to ISO/DIS 23556 – modified. The modification included the introduction of an acid cocktail to simulate acid build-up in the oil. This acid recipe has been used for similar additive depletion evaluations, included the work published in SAE 2004-01-3014 – Soot and Acid Control in Diesel Lubricating Systems. The acid cocktail was generated to be representative of real-world combustion by-products consisting predominately of sulfuric acid. The acid cocktail consisted of 28.75 g 36N sulfuric acid, 1.61 grams 15.8N nitric acid, and 1.80 grams 17.4N acetic acid. Five-mL of the acid cocktail was added after each 4-hour sample was obtained through the 48-hour sample. Therefore, 60-mL of the acid cocktail was used to challenge the test filter’s acid neutralizing methodology. Previous research has shown that 60-mL of the acid cocktail will deplete the oil additive package, reducing the TBN from 9.4 to < 5 mg KOH/g. Total Acid Number (TAN), Total Base Number (TBN), and Thermogravimtric Analysis (TGA) performed per ASTM D-664, D-4739, and E-1131 were used to analysis the oil samples, respectively.
Water Removal The Puradyn and Premo Plus systems also have a heater in their system to remove water. Although the oil test temperature is already above the boiling point of water and should drive off any free water, as requested, this feature was also evaluated. Approximately 9.76 grams of water was added to the oil test sump upon completion to obtaining the samples every four hours. De-ionized water was used for both evaluations.
Results ISO/DIS/23556 Test Results The ISO/DIS 23556 soot removal results are provided in Table 1.

ISO 4548-12 Test Results The life or load capacity for the filters was evaluated using ISO 4548-12, Table 2. Although the test method does determine filter efficiency, the test method is designed for full flow oil filters challenged with ISO 12103-1 A3 medium test dust. Since the test dust particles are significantly larger than soot, the efficiency data is outside the scope of this work. The data sheets for these evaluations are provided in Appendix A.

Additive Depletion Results The systems utilized in the Luberfiner and Puradyn filtration systems both appear to aid in neutralizing the acid and extending the TBN. The results for these two evaluations are shown in Figure 1.
Water Removal Tests The ISO/DIS 23556 evaluations with water contamination were inconclusive concerning the water removal as the water contents during both evaluations went down below the zero hour sample, Figure 2. As discussed above, since the oil temperature is already 105°C, most of the water is most likely evaporated before it is processed through the oil filter.

Conclusions All the tested bypass oil filters removed approximately the same quantity of soot. The Luberfiner and Puradyn systems appear to remove the most soot, but since repeatability for this test method has yet to be determined, it is not known if the difference is real or just within the repeatability of the test method. Using ISO 4548-12 to determine the capacity of the oil filters did not result in data that appears to be very useful. Although the filters will remove larger debris, the contaminant used for these evaluation (ISO 12103-1 A3 medium test dust) is not what the oil filters are designed to remove.

The additive depletion system for both the Luberfiner and Puradyn systems appears to maintain the TBN at acceptable levels for the duration of this test. Since the two oil filtration systems utilize different philosophies to reduce the acid content, these evaluations demonstrate there are various ways to accomplish this goal. This modification to the ISO/DIS 23556 test method appears to provide a reasonable method to evaluate future products claiming to reduce the acids in the oil. As suspected, the water addition evaluations were meaningless as the water could evaporate in the sump before being processed through the oil filters.
