RELIGION MATTERS - SWCRS 2017

"If I went back to college today, I think I would probably major in comparative religion, because that's how integrated it is in everything that we are working on and deciding

and thinking about in life today." — John Kerry, U.S. Secretary of State

The now famous comments of John Kerry have resonated deeply with faith-based leaders around the world, with those who study and teach Religious Studies in colleges and universities, and with citizens who take seriously the role of religion in public life. The SWCRS 2017 program explores the myriad ways in which "Religion Matters" today. Here you will find a range of sessions on what Kerry names as "the rich, diverse, and complicated public implications of religious belief." We invite you to preview the sessions on these pages and participate in them at the SWCRS 2017 meeting. See you there!

Highly specialized disciplinary fields have yielded invaluable insights and new outlooks into the disciplines that fall under the heading of religion or religious studies. One adverse outcome of this focus on specialization is the loss of a common language that allows for confident engagement across the disciplines that make up religious studies. This session will address the difficulty and need for interdisciplinary conversations, particularly within religious studies, in order to demonstrate the challenges and the fruit of shared dialogue.
