“In You our fathers put their trust;” Psalm 22:4

By Jo Ann Crouse Our former thirteen colonies realized early on that they needed to unite in order to defeat the British. So, in 1777, at the Se-cond Continental Congress, they drafted the Articles of Confederation, which defined the states mu-tual relationships. The Articles of Confederation were ratified in 1781 and became the first govern-ing framework of the United States. The Articles of Confederation gave most of its power to the states, leaving the central government weak and ineffective. It could not muster troops or raise taxes. In order to enact laws, the govern-ment needed the cooperation of the states, which was often lacking. Frustrated by the lack of pro-gress by the spring of 1787, Congress realized that it had to do something to make the government more effective. With this in mind, the members of Congress convened in Philadelphia to update and amend the Articles of Confederation. They ended up by creating a new Constitution, and James Madison, representing Virginia, became the chief recorder of information. The Convention dele-gates met secretly through the summer and finally signed the proposed U.S. Constitution on Sep-tember 17, 1787. In order for the Constitution to become the law by which all Americans abided, two-thirds of the 13 states had to ratify it individually, and it was sent to them for that purpose on September 28, 1787. James Madison campaigned for the ratification of the Constitution by co-authoring a series of essays with John Jay and Alexander Hamilton that appeared in various New York newspapers and then cir-culated around the states. There were 85 essays in all, with Madison writing 29, and these were known as the Federalist Papers which helped get the Constitution approved by the states. Madi-son’s important contribution to the overall creation of the Constitution earned him the nickname “Father of the Constitution” later in life. On June 21, 1788, New Hampshire became the ninth state to ratify the new Constitution, making it the law of the land. James Madison would go on to become the fourth president of the U.S. from 1809-1817. We also have him to thank for the Bill of Rights, the Constitution’s first 10 amendments which guarantee our freedoms to this day. It should also be noted that James Madison was a very shy man who was mar-ried to the very outgoing Dolley Payne Todd. During the War of 1812, first lady Dolley Madison saved many White House artifacts while her husband narrowly escaped death when the British burned Washington.

WHO WISHES THEM WELL AS THEY TAKE THEIR FINAL JOURNEY?

By Sydney Ingram

I’m not sure if you are aware or not, but most Thursday’s Veterans who have no

family are buried in Boulder City at the Veteran’s Cemetery. Until very recently,

these Veterans began that final trip alone and I think you would agree, that is some-

thing no one who has laid their life on the line for their country should ever have to

do.

I would like to arrange for SHRW to be their family and friends as they start that

final journey. Bob Donaghy, Patriot Guard, has asked groups like ours to help make

sure that no veteran ever has to start that journey alone and I hope that SHRW mem-

bers will step up and help do our part just once a month.

The services are short, starting at 8:40 A.M. each Thursday and are done one after another, depending on how

many veterans are scheduled on that particular day. I would ask that you e-mail me if you are interested in par-

ticipating in this program so that I, in turn, can let the coordinator know that SHRW will have members taking

part. Once we know who will be participating, I will let you know which Thursday’s we will need to be in

Boulder City.

My e-mail address is: [email protected]

IT HAS NOT BEEN VERIFIED, BUT I HEARD By George Meese Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has confided to a few Sen-ate colleagues and friends that because of health problems, he will be resigning from his Senate seat shortly after the No-vember elections. He also suggested that he is very dissatis-fied with President Obama’s plan to strengthen the economy. And that the president is unwilling to listen to those with far more experience in such matters. Sen. Reid went on to criti-cize the Obama family for spending millions of taxpayer dol-lars on expensive vacations at the same time that the presi-dent criticizes the wealthy for allegedly failing to pay their “fair share” of taxes even though the wealthiest 10 percent of the population pay more than 70% of taxes paid by the feder-al government. Sen. Reid says this sends conflicting messag-es to the voters. Just like Reid’s unverified statement that Mitt Romney has paid no federal income taxes in 10 years, I don’t know wheth-er the news about his plans to retire or his criticisms of Presi-

dent Obama are true.

President Bush dances with a wounded warrior…A pic-ture I am sure we will never find with our Current commander in chief… This man has class!

HECK ANNOUNCES FALL DEBATE SCHEDULE

Heck: "Voters deserve to know where candidates stand on the issues."

HENDERSON - Dr. Joe Heck's campaign has announced the schedule for debates he will participate in this fall. Dr. Heck has already confirmed five debates around the Third District to discuss his positions on major issues affecting Nevada's men and women. The dates of the five debates are listed below. "This election is truly one of the most important we have seen in a generation and when voters go to the polls in November they will be determining the future direction of our country," Dr. Joe Heck said. Given the importance of this election, voters deserve to know where the candidates stand on the is-sues, what they will do to turn around the economy, and how they will get Nevadans back to work and back into their homes. I look forward to a full and robust debate on these issues to ensure that voters in the Third District can make an informed decision come Election Day."

The schedule of debates Dr. Heck will be attending is as follows: October 11 -- PBS Las Vegas Debate October 15 -- Ner Tamid Candidate Forum October 16 -- Beth Shalom Candidate Forum TBA -- My News 3 Debate

TBA -- "Face to Face" with Jon Ralston

Want To Help Get Republicans Elected? Host A Party.

A great way to help is to HOST A PARTY to introduce candidates to your

friends, neighbors, independents, non-partisans and disenchanted Democrats

in your neighborhood. If you need help, contact Daryll Ann Carter at

[email protected] or Lynn Armanino at [email protected]. Decide on

the local candidates you want to invite so your guests get to meet and talk

face to face. Daryll Ann or Lynn can help you with a list of guests to in-

vite. We can try to make arrangements for a conference call with a national

figure to boost your party’s appeal for a larger party of 50-100, Here are a

few things you should remember:

You can either first choose a date and then contact candidates or contact

the candidates and then choose your date. Whatever works best for you.

Always ask your guests to bring a friend and RSVP so you have a count. Fol-

low-up with a phone call to confirm your guest is coming.

Have sign in sheets for guests for their names, email, address and phone

numbers. This will be turned over to the campaign headquarters for follow-

up.

Have campaign literature available (yard signs, bumper stickers and campaign

buttons).

Have voter registration forms. If anyone is not registered have them com-

plete the forms and turn them in to Daryll Ann Sulliman, Carolyn von Gortler

or Lynn Armanino (contact information is in this newsletter.)

Have sticky paper name badges so people can address each other by name.

Have finger food and drinks (tea, coffee, water).

Publicize your party through personal phone calls, flyers to your neighbors’

doors, and email.

On the day of the party, place yard signs in your yard so newcomers can eas-

ily find you.

Welcome your guests with a small speech about the candidate (s). Then turn

the floor over to your candidates to speak.

Invite guests to ask questions and discuss issues.

Invite anyone not registered to vote to do so.

Take pictures during your house party for inclusion on the candidate’s web-

site, our club’s Facebook, Twitter and future newsletters.

NFRW Releases Results of Nation-wide“Table Talk Survey of Republican Women”

A recent survey of Republican women affirms that women are most concerned about economic and fiscal issues during this presidential election year. More than 8,500 Republican women from all 50 states and many U.S. territories partici-pated in the online survey, which was conducted by the NFRW from July 1 - Aug. 6. The survey covered a range of topics on domestic and foreign policy, societal concerns, perceptions about women, elections, politics, personal be-liefs, and demographics. Economic and fiscal issues noticeably dominated. Click http://www.nfrw.org/programs/survey.htm for a summary and a full report of the results.

Meaning of a Flag Draped Coffin

All Americans should be given this lesson. Those who think that America is an arrogant nation should really reconsid-er that thought. Our founding fathers used GOD's word and teachings to establish our Great Nation and I think it's high time Americans get re-educated about this Nation's history. Pass it along and be proud of the country we live in and even more proud of those who serve to protect our 'GOD GIVEN' rights and freedoms.

I hope you take the time to read this ... To understand what the flag draped coffin really means ... Here is how to un-derstand the flag that laid upon it and is surrendered to so many widows and widowers. Do you know that at military funerals, the 21-gun salute stands for the sum of the numbers in the year 1776?

Have you ever noticed the honor guard pays meticulous attention to correctly folding the United States of America Flag 13 times? You probably thought it was to symbolize the original 13 colonies, but we learn something new every day! The 1st fold of the flag is a symbol of life.

The 2nd fold is a symbol of the belief in eternal life

The 3rd fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veterans departing the ranks who gave a portion of their

lives for the defense of the country to attain peace throughout the world.

The 4th fold represents the weaker nature, for as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace as well as in time of war for His divine guidance.

The 5th fold is a tribute to the country, for in the words of Stephen Decatur, 'Our Country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right; but it is still our country, right or wrong.'

The 6th fold is for where people's hearts lie. It is with their heart that they pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States Of America, and the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.

The 7th fold is a tribute to its Armed Forces, for it is through the Armed Forces that they protect their country and their flag against all her enemies, whether they be found within or without the bounda- ries of their repub-lic.

The 8th fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day.

Page 10: Southern Hills Republican Women · 2020. 7. 28. · including “Millionaire Republican” and a professional sports handicapper and odds maker who has been dubbed by the national

The 9th fold is a tribute to womanhood, and Mothers. For it has been through their faith, their love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great has been molded.

The 10th fold is a tribute to the father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of their country since they were first born.

The 11th fold represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon and glorifies in the Hebrews eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

The 12th fold represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in the Christians eyes, God the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit.

The 13th fold, or when the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost reminding them of their nation’s motto, 'In God We Trust.'

After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it takes on the appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the soldiers who served under General George Washington, and the Sailors and Marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones, who were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the Armed Forces of the United States, pre-serving for them the rights, privileges and freedoms they enjoy today.

There are some traditions and ways of doing things that have deep meaning. In the future, you'll see flags folded and now you will know why. Share this with the children you love and all others who love what is referred to, the symbol of ' Liberty and Free-dom.'
