The Southern Demographic Association is a scientific and
educational corporation operating under the laws of the commonwealth of
Virginia. It is comprised of persons with professional interests in demogra-
phy and population studies.

CALL FOR PAPERS
October 10-12, 2018

You are invited to submit abstracts for papers and/or posters for the 2018 annual meeting of the
Southern Demographic Association (SDA). You are also invited to suggest topics for panels
and poster sessions. The 2018 annual meeting of the SDA will be held in Durham, NC with the
local arrangements organized by Becca Tippett and Mark Fossett.
Presentations of research in both applied and academic sociology are welcome as are related
topics in economics, sociology, geography, political science, public health, epidemiology, and
psychology. The structure of presentations is flexible; potential contributors are encouraged to
not only send abstracts for individual research papers, but also for posters, complete sessions,
thematic sessions, panel discussions, software demonstrations, and more!
Please email Linda Jacobsen ([email protected]), 2018 program chair, with any questions re-
garding a potential submission. Presentations by (or co-authored with) students are especially
welcome; they can offer a student a significant first professional meeting experience. SDA also
awards cash prizes to the best undergraduate and to the best graduate student paper (see details
next page). All proposals and abstracts should be submitted by June 29, 2018, through the

The 2019 Applied Demography Conference will be held February 8-9
in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The conference will be held at the Hotel
Albuquerque at Old Town.

Jo Martins, Fei Guo and David Swanson have completed Global Population in
Transition, which will be released by Springer in June.
In a sweeping review of human population past, present and future, the book
deals with macro and micro aspects of population change and brings together ma-
terial often scattered in a number of sources and disciplines that serves to better
understand population change and its socio-economic determinants and
consequences.
Guo and Martins are professors of business
administration at Macquarie University in
Sydney, Australia. Swanson is a professor of
sociology at the University of California
Riverside and a regional faculty affiliate of
the Center for Studies in Demography and
Ecology, University of Washington.
Guo and Swanson received their PhDs (in so-
ciology) from the University of Hawai'i in
1996 and 1985, respectively. They also are
alumni of the East-West Center's program in
population studies.
Martins completed his dissertation at the Uni-
versity of Sydney.

SDA mourns the passing of long time friend and member Dr. Parker Frisbie who
died in February at age 77.
As described in his obituary, Dr. Frisbie was a renowned University of Texas
professor and a genuine cowboy. Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Frisbie
served as Director of Population Research Center at UT, as well as serving as
Department Head of Sociology before retiring in 2008.
Our condolences go out to Dr. Frisbie’s many family, friends, and colleagues.

Associate or Full Professor in Demography and Population Studies, Univ. of Min-
nesota
The University of Minnesota invites applications for a full-time faculty member
at the Associate or Full Professor level with interests in demography and popula-
tion studies who can actively and innovatively advance the missions of the Uni-
versity, the Minnesota Population Center (MPC), and its affiliated colleges and
academic units. This is an open-discipline/area search.
The tenure home will be determined based on the candidate%u2019s background/
interests, in consultation with the appropriate colleges and academic units, and in
accordance with University policy. One-half of teaching and service obligations
will be fulfilled in MPC as part of the population studies program.

Associate Professor – Population
Associate Professor of Policy Analysis and Management at Cornell Uni-
versity with research interests in population. The Department of Policy
Analysis and Management (PAM) in the College of Human Ecology at
Cornell University invites nominations and applications for a faculty
member at the Associate Professor level with research interests in popula-
tion. This is a tenured position that includes 50% research and 50% teach-
ing, advising, and service. Teaching and advising responsibilities include
support of the department's undergraduate and graduate degree offerings
in Policy Analysis and Management. There are opportunities for involve-
ment in research and training programs in demography administered
through the Cornell Population Center (CPC). Qualifications include a
Ph.D. in economics, sociology, demography, public policy, or a related
field and a scholarly and teaching record commensurate with tenure at the

The Department of Sociology is inviting applications for a one-year
temporary non-renewable instructor position in sociology during the
2018-19 academic year. Master's degree in Sociology or closely
related field required. Candidates with PhDs in Sociology are
desired. ABDs will be considered. The successful candidate should
be able to teach research methods and/or statistics and courses in
their area of specialization. Preference may be given to candidates
with specialization in medical sociology and health-related fields.
Teaching load is 4/4. Review of candidates will begin on June 4th and will contin-
ue until the position is filled. To apply,
