As these are protected waters in which conservation rules, respect and appreciation come before other commercial or recreational ends, there are clear regulations that affect both recreational � shing and scuba diving.

In the Marine Reserve of Migjorn, scuba diving requires prior authorization from the Fisheries Of� ce. The same applies in the National Park of Cabrera, although, in this case, authorisations should be applied for from the Park Authority, which decides at all times which places are suitable for diving and which are not (it is currently allowed in Cala Galiota, around the islets of Conills and Ses Bledes, or in the Ana Rosa shipwreck). Authorisation is also required for anchoring and sailing in Park waters.

Non-extractive snorkeling (without capturing), in contrast, is free in a large part of the area. There are very many interesting snorkeling spots in almost every part of the coastline.

The coastal waters of the southern point of Mallorca are within the Marine Reserve of Migjorn of Mallorca, the largest of the 5 reserves that the island of Mallorca currently possesses.

The waters of the Marine Reserve of Migjorn have very few deep sections and are almost without exception less than 50 metres in depth. This fact, along with the natural transparency of its waters, enables the perfect development of meadows of marine phanerogams as famous and important as Neptune Grass.

In these meadows, which serve as perfect breeding and hatching centres, many multi-coloured � sh abound (Mediterranean rainbow wrasses, ornate wrasses, East Atlantic peacock wrasses, longhorn cow� sh, salemas, etc.) as well as bivalve molluscs and gastropods such as the octopus and cuttle� sh. On the seabed the most notable inhabitants are the razor� sh (this area being the largest � shing ground in Mallorca). They share the habitat with sole, red mullet, greater weever and skate.

The presence of corraline beds and rocky substratum increases the diversity of the underwater scenery and associated species. In the rocky caves and corners there are many sponges, calcareous algae, star� sh and also � sh highly appreciated by divers, such as conger eels, moray eels, large-scaled scorpion � sh and grouper � sh.

Further south, the National Park of the Archipelago of Cabrera is another paradise for lovers of marine life, with more than 8,700 protected marine hectares, in which abound cetaceans, sea birds and � sh. Common dentex, white sea bream, sea bream, sand steenbras, snapper, brown meagre and many other species can be enjoyed without going too far away from the coast.
