Welcome to the 2013 Full-time Course Guide!

This Guide is a great place to find out about the courses on offer atSouth Worcestershire College.

You will also find out about events happening throughout the coming year which aredesigned to help you choose the right course.

Once you have had a look through this Guide, coming to an Open Event is a great nextstep. You and your family can come and have a look around at the excellent facilitieson offer and have an informal chat with the tutors about any of the courses that youmay be interested in.

Following your visit to an Open Event you will hopefully have an idea of which subjectyou would like to study. The best way to be really sure of the course that you want to joinis to come along to a ‘Have a Go’ session and try a course out (see page 6 for details).

Joining College is an exciting time. You will immediately notice that College has a verydifferent atmosphere from school; calling tutors by their first names, not wearing schooluniform and coming into College for just a few days each week are some of the manythings that make our students feel like they are studying in a more adult environment.

During your time at College you will have plenty of opportunities to join in activities, take part in social events and raise lots of money at charity events.

Your time at SWC isn’t just about learning, it’s

about starting a new phase in your life.

Hear from anAccess to Higher Education Student

David Evans, aged 53, spent 22 years working for thePrison Service. His final position was at the HeadOffice in Burton on Trent, where he was responsible forpolicy for life sentence prisoners and mother andbaby units.

David had the chance to retire early from the Serviceand so had the opportunity to consider a change ofdirection for his future.

“I have a lot of working life left and felt it was an ideal timefor me to consider my options. I felt that there were a lot ofsimilarities between working in the prison service and mentalhealth nursing. For me, becoming qualified in mental healthnursing seemed a logical progression from my career in thePrison Service.

I contacted the University of Worcester to find out about thedegree courses that they offered in the area of mentalhealth. The University advised me that I would need A Levelsto apply for a degree course and this prompted me tocontact South Worcestershire College about the Access toHigher Education. I had a long chat with the Access to HECourse Manager, Sheila Jervis, and was able to join thecourse in the October.

We have quite a diverse mix of people on the Accesscourse, the majority of whom are moving on to university tostudy nursing, whilst others are moving on to teaching, andone on to archaeology. I have enjoyed working with such agreat mix of people because you get different perspectivesand hear about different people’s experiences.

Sheila has been very helpful and supportive throughout thecourse. She expects her students to work to deadlines, however she also understands that she is teaching maturestudents who have family commitments and so there isflexibility there if needed.

The Access to HE course prepares students for universitystudy – providing study skills that are needed to succeed ona degree course.

I am looking forward to starting at the University. From 500applicants only 31 were accepted on to my course so Irealise that this is a great opportunity for me.

I will be studying for the BSc Honours in Mental Health forthree years. Once qualified there will be many opportunitiesto work in a diverse range of job roles, such as drug actionteams and alcohol agencies. I hope to secure a position asa Mental Health Practitioner in the NHS.”

“I think that you are never too old to learnand at this time in my life when myfinancial commitments are fewer I feel thatthis is the ideal time for me to take mycareer in a new direction .”

Rebecca Abunassar, aged 40, is studying on the AATLevel 3 course.

“My career, before I had my family, was in insurance, however I had always been interested in accountancy. Itwas when I took voluntary redundancy and moved with myfamily from Shropshire that I felt it was the right time tochange my career direction.

I wanted to do something that would be flexible and fitaround family commitments. It was after spending sometime as treasurer for the local playgroup that I decided thatI would study for an accountancy qualification.

I found out that the AAT course was offered at the Collegeand came along for an interview and to find out moreabout the course. I found out that the course was run overthree days each week, during school hours, which fittedperfectly around my home life.

Originally I had considered studying for the qualificationfrom home but I decided that studying at College providedthe benefits of tutors being on hand to answer questionsand also the support of a group who are studying for thesame qualification.

I look forward to coming into College. Even parking is stressfree – there is always a parking space available when Iarrive at College at 9.15am and the parking is free ofcharge.

On the course we work on two to three topics at any onetime and then we enter a computerised exam – this is

flexible and if anyone doesn’t feel ready for an exam theycan take it at a later date. If someone fails the exam theopportunity is there to do a re-take. Exam results come backwithin the hour.

It has been really nice to get back into studying and use mybrain again to learn.

We are a mixed group of school leavers and maturelearners and this creates an excellent working environmentin class. We have a great relationship with our tutor, Elijah, and he explains things really clearly and he knows his stuffinside out. We work through lots of practice exam papersand everyone in the group helps each other when required– the course provides a great support network as well as agreat way to build on your social life.”

I didn’t know which subject I wanted to study at first but Ihad a good look on the College website and came acrossthe Administration course.

Hear from anArt and Design Student

Tara Garwood, aged 20, studied GCSEArt at school and then started to studyFine Art at Sixth Form. She found SixthForm too similar to school so decidedto move into employment to giveherself time to consider what her nextcareer move would be.

Tara looked into art courses at localColleges which offered specific art courses, such as Fine Art. However Tara wanted tojoin a course where she could experiencedifferent mediums and forms of art. The BTECArt and Design course offered at SouthWorcestershire College was exactly whatshe wanted.

“I liked the look of the BTEC Art and Designcourse because of the different areascovered on the course, such as textiles, graphics and 3D work.

I came for an interview with the CourseManager, Celia, to find out more about thecourse. We went through some of myartwork which I had taken along to theinterview and we spoke about the kind ofdesign work that I enjoyed.

On the course we have worked on a varietyof briefs including designing a logo forcorporate items such as business cards, t-shirts,shop fronts and name badges. At the

moment we are working on pieces for theend of year show.

Aside from the variety of work that we do,College is very different from school. You aregiven guidance from the tutors rather than instruction, and you are able to workindependently, managing your ownworkload. You can put in as much work asyou feel you need to, for example I putextra work into the graphic design briefspurely because this is my favourite area andI want to reflect this in my grades.

My confidence to try out new things hasreally grown during my time on the course.

When we all started on this course we werequite shy of showing our artwork to eachother at the regular review sessions, but overtime we have all become really close as agroup and have gained confidence in showing our work and have learned to takeconstructive criticism on board.

I am now coming to the end of my courseand I have applied to study animation atthe University of Worcester.”

“Throughout the course I haveproduced pieces of work which,at the start of the course, Iwould never have thought Iwould be able to do. I havereally surprised myself with thework that I have produced.

Hear from anAccess to Art Student

“Thanks to the Access to Artcourse I now feel prepared foruniversity.”

Anne Gibson, aged 50, worked in thenursing profession for 21 years. She tooka career break while looking after herchildren and studied to becomequalified in garden design. The coursefocussed heavily on plants, but Annewanted to take her garden designs astep further and felt that a good soundknowledge of fine art would benefit her.

“I went to an Open Day at the University ofWorcester to discuss the BA in Fine Artcourse and it was suggested that, as a firststep, I join the Access to Art course. Theyadvised that the course would provide mewith a good grounding in the history of artand also would give me an understandingof colour and design.

With my children going to university, theopportunity to move on in my career byjoining the Access to Art course was one Iwas very keen to take. I came to the Collegefor an interview with the Head of the Schoolof Art, Caroline Park, and she showed mework by previous students and told me aboutstudents who had also used the Access toArt course as a stepping stone to university.

From the beginning I have found both thecourse and the other students on the courseinspiring. There is a good mix of people andcultures and we all have different views andexperiences which I really enjoy.

We are in College two days each week.We are given a fair amount of freedomwithin the set briefs. For example we had asculpture brief and were taught about theproperties of different materials such asclay, wood and stone, and then we couldchoose the medium in which we worked.

We work quite closely as a group and arevery encouraging to each other. Peergroup assessments of our practical work arereally beneficial because of the diverse mixof people that we have in the group.

The course involves theory and researchwork and so gives students, who arepreparing to move on to university, theopportunity to brush up on their study skills.

All of the tutors on the course have beenvery helpful. If you ask for help they arethere for you and any issues that arise areresolved quickly.

When the time came for me to apply to theUniversity of Worcester Caroline was veryhelpful. She gave me lots of invaluableadvice when I was putting my personalstatement together.”

After leaving school Katie Ellis made the decision tocarry on studying but was unsure about what shewanted to do.

“I looked into Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy and chose tostudy Beauty Therapy because I felt that the qualificationoffered me a wider choice of career opportunities as well asthe opportunity to specialise in areas such as holistic therapies.

I considered South Worcestershire College and anotherlocal College and noticed some differences, such as SouthWorcestershire College used high quality products in theirsalons; differences like this helped me to make my decision.

From the beginning of the course we built up ourconfidence in working on clients by practicing our new skillson each other until we had perfected them; we thenmoved on to paying clients who booked into the salons.

In this second year of the Level 3 course we have beenstudying electrical and holistic treatments – my favouritetreatment to give a client is definitely an electrical facial –the client can see an improvement immediately which isvery satisfying for me.

The course does involve some in-depth study in areas suchas Anatomy and Physiology so you need to have a genuineinterest in the area of beauty therapy to succeed.

I have now been offered a place to study the FoundationDegree in Spa Management at Derby University”

“I hadn’t done very well at school so this course offered methe opportunity to gain some new skills, despite not havingvery good qualifications. Coming to the College also meantthat I could improve my Maths skills, which would help me tosucceed on the Construction course.

I originally liked the sound of the Construction course becauseit would provide me with a variety of basic skills in many areassuch as carpentry, bricklaying, painting and tiling.

Some friends of mine started the Heating and Plumbing hereat the College last year and they recommended theCollege to me so this too helped me make the decision tojoin the College.

Throughout the course I have really enjoyed working withthe Course Manager Rob. He is still active in the buildingindustry and so he has lots of relevant experience andknows what he’s talking about.

Thanks to the course my confidence has grown in lots ofways. There is a bit of banter between the Constructionstudents, as there would be on a building site, and joining inhas certainly helped to improve my confidence. I have alsogained more confidence with trying new tasks – I have evenfitted a new bathroom sink at home!”

“My plan for the future is to become self-employed, either as a plumber or a tiler, working in private homes.”

Oliver Prior left school with GCSEs in Technology,Maths, English, Business, Science and A Levelswith B and C grades.

With an interest in Technology he went to College to do afull-time course in Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair atLevel 1, which he successfully completed. In January 2011he started his Apprenticeship at Rybrook BMW in Worcesterto continue his studies at Level 2.

Mark Taplin, Workshop Controller at Rybrook confirmed thatthe knowledge that Oliver already had from doing his Level 1was valuable in the decision to take Oliver as an apprentice.

“It showed that Oliver had the interest in what he wanted todo and he was already committed to the industry.”

Oliver worked with a different technician on a daily basis, observing processes to start with, getting more and moreinvolved as time progressed.

“He is now able to perform routine servicing and ‘PreDelivery Inspections’ without supervision and is now at thestage where he is to be involved in a complete enginerebuild.”

The BMW technicians identified at an early stage that Oliverwas showing the required interest in the work, was alwaysasking questions and wanted to get involved.

“This is not a job where you can learn it all at College. Itneeds to be a combination of the knowledge andunderstanding gained applied to the practical experiencesneeded within the workplace.

From our point of view, the Apprenticeship gives us theflexibility that we need; Oliver spends one day per week atCollege and we have him for four days to train and workwith.”

Oliver’s progression on his Level 2 Apprenticeship sinceJanuary this year has led to Rybrook discussing hisprogression onto the Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship withthe College and consideration for the BMW TechnicianTraining in the near future.

Oliver was quick to recognise that his Level 1 full-time coursewas a benefit to his employment as an apprentice atRybrook BMW. It helped him settle in quickly and gain thetrust of the technicians. Oliver stated that “the four days perweek at work has allowed me to get real ‘hands on’experiences and I have gained a great deal of knowledgerelevant to the trade. Having worked with all 16 technicians,I have experienced many different ways and approachesto completing the tasks required following the BMWprocesses and procedures.”

“The tutors on the Public Services course have a lot ofexperience between them, having been in the police, the RAFand the army. Their lessons are based around real life scenariosthat they have had to deal with in their careers. Knowing thatthey have each been in the services and experienced a wholevariety of situations makes their lessons really interesting andgives you faith in what they saying.

The Public Services course involves lots of practical activitieswhich improve our team building and leadership skills. Fitness also plays a big part on the Public Services course. Itis essential that you have good fitness levels to enter intoany of the services. Our tutors have always encouraged usto improve our fitness levels. For me this has now become agood habit and I go to the gym at least three times a week. When I started the course I could do 11 press ups, now I cando 48 in two minutes which is one of the entry requirementsfor the army.

During the course we have also been on army and policecareers days. During these visits we had the opportunity tofind out about the different career paths that are available.Originally I wanted to go into the police force, but now that Iam fully informed of the career options available I amchoosing to apply to join the army.”

I had always wanted to go to university and when I foundout that South Worcestershire College offered a Level 3 sportcourse, which you can use to progress on to university, Imade the decision to apply to join the College.

At a College Open Evening the College’s FA coach told meabout the practical aspect of the course which certainlyappealed to me – I’m not the sort of person who is happy tosit in a classroom every day.

The course covers a wide range of topics ranging fromAnatomy and Physiology to Sports Coaching. You also havethe opportunity to study extra units, such as Life Saving andGym Instructing, which are all great to have on your CV.

When I started to come towards the end of my course Istarted research into further training opportunities in America.

I found out about a company who were offeringscholarships. I submitted my application online and wasthen invited to attend trials in Leeds. The trials were videoedand sent to the scholarship company in America. I wasselected to train with the National Champions – the bestuniversity league team in America.

I will be studying in America for four years and then plan touse my qualifications to move into professional football.”

football in the local area and so weappreciate having the opportunity to havehim as our coach.

The standard of football played is high andwe travel as far as the other side ofBirmingham to compete with other colleges, sixth forms and academies.

At every game that we play we areexpected to put 100% effort in. On the pitchit feels great to be part of a team which iscompletely committed to the match.

As well as the football skills the FootballAcademy teaches you discipline and it alsomotivates you to keep fit so that yousucceed.”

“I would like to focus mycareer on football . Oncompletion of my course Imay have the opportunity tomove into coaching at localschools. Also my name hasbeen forwarded by Sammy tojoin a local club.”
