Enrolment InformationHow to enrol:

Existing students have the facility to re-enrol on their current course early from Monday 4th March 2013. New students can enrol daily from 8.30am on Monday11th March 2013. We advise students to enrol as early as possible to avoid disappointment as the class may be full. To enrol on any of the courses in this CourseGuide you will have to complete an enrolment form, by telephone or in person at the specified enrolment venue, and sign the student declaration.

Useful InformationCourse Fees/Concessions: The Government, through the Education Funding Agency and the Skills Funding Agency, makes funding available for somelearners to cover the tuition costs of their programme (for example, those in receipt of certain benefits). The Secretary of State does not expect tuition fees tobe charged to full-time or part-time 16-18 year old students on courses marked with an * in this Course Guide).

Concessions may be available on courses marked with a R in this Guide.

If you qualify for tuition fee remission, a copy of the evidence showing that you fall within the approved remission categories must be obtained and attachedto your learning agreement in order that the appropriate tuition fee remission may be claimed by us from the relevant agency.

There may still be examination and/or material fees to pay - these are NOT subject to a reduction. Please contact Learner Services for further details or if youhave any queries.

Anyone applying for a full-time or part-time course and who will be in receipt of funding must supply one of the following forms of ID: Relationship with school,Passport, Driving Licence, ID Card or other form of national identification, National Insurance card, Certificate of Entitlement to Funding, Bank/Credit/Debit card.

Employer Financing: We are able to invoice employers on production of a completed Fee Authorised Form FA1 (or FA2 form for companies who are bookingmore than one employee onto a course) available from Learner Services, together with completed enrolment forms for each employee. Payment by employerscan also be made by company cheque or credit card together with the forms as above.

Refunds: Refunds will not be made to students who, having enrolled, find the course unsuitable or are unable to attend, as these matters should be determined priorto enrolling. There will be no refunds for withdrawal from a one term course, regardless of circumstance. Any refund that is granted due to exceptional circumstanceswill be subject to a standard retention fee of 20% of the total course fee. Information and a Refund Application Form can be obtained from Learner Services.

Additional Fees (marked E, R or C in this Course Guide): Some examination and certification fees have been included in the prices listed and must be paidwhen enrolling, however exam fees on some courses are extra and are payable when entering or registering for an exam. For further information the CollegeExamination Officers can be contacted at Evesham on (01386) 712604 or at Malvern on (01684) 584552.

Materials and Equipment (marked M in this Course Guide): Some courses require the use of specialist materials or equipment which may incur additionalcosts. You will be advised of this when you enrol. Students are advised not to purchase additional items until they are sure that the class will be running.

Attendance and Withdrawals: Course subsidies to the College are withdrawn if a student fails to attend. The College will assume you have left a course if you fail toattend for 4 consecutive weeks. At that point your place may be allocated to another student. If you know you may be absent but wish to continue yourattendance at a later date, or if you wish to leave your course, please inform the Course Tutor in writing.

Course Cancellations: Minimum student numbers are required for courses to run. The College reserves the right to cancel or combine a course due toinsufficient recruitment and will aim to give a minimum of 3 days' notice. Students may be offered the opportunity to transfer to a similar course which may beat a different time or day, or request a refund.

The College very much regrets having to cancel courses at short notice - please help us to avoid this by enrolling no later than 7 days before the start of yourchosen course.

Discretionary Support Funds: Any student on a Government funded course experiencing financial difficulties can apply for means-tested DiscretionarySupport Funds to help towards the cost of course related expenses such as registered childcare, travel, books, exams and equipment.

Just like Bruegel and Hogarth before him, Lowry painted in direct response to his environment. SUMMER SCHOOL 2013The School of Art was established in 1886 and we have records of exciting events through thedecades. It remains central to the Malvern Campus of South Worcestershire College. We offer acontemporary programme enriched with traditional Arts and Crafts areas from our heritage.Our popular Summer School for adults is well-established, friendly and taught by professional artists(find out more about the artists teaching at this year’s Summer School on page 17 of this Guide).Summer School classes range from short half day courses through to three day events and catersfor many different interests.

We welcome new students, and those who return year after year to try different courses. Currentstudents can extend their studies, and others may come as a holiday treat. Teachers find theSummer School useful for inspiring new ideas, and for many people it gives the opportunity to trysomething new.

Helen Melvin is a textile artist working withnatural dyes and felt using uniquetechniques founded on ancient traditionsand contemporary art. Her art reflects thecolours and textures of the natural world aswell as decay and disintegration. As a tutorshe encourages both individual creativityand good skills.

Lauren Reilly-Page graduated in 2011 witha Textile Design Degree from Central SaintMartins, where she specialised in designingand making woven fabric. She hasbroadened her skills in textiles to includeknitting and various winding techniques.Lauren also works part-time as the ArtTechnician within the College.

Kim Williams is an established artist andexperienced tutor whose oil paintings andcharcoal drawings are exhibitedinternationally. She specialises in flowers,landscapes, and interiors and is a prolificexponent in the use of sketchbooks.

Guy Woodford is an experienced sculptorwho has specialised in figurative andportrait sculpture. Over the 40 years he hasbeen teaching at the College, he hasdeveloped expertise in both traditional andcontemporary approaches to sculpture,including woodcarving, stone carving,modelling, construction, subtractiveprocesses and abstraction. Guy is wellknown for his own sculpture commissionsand exhibitions and for the hundreds ofstudents he has taught successfully.

Anna Yevtukh studied bookbinding tograduate level in the Ukraine, and is now apopular teacher at the College. She hasbeen designing, making and selling herown unusual creative books since 1998.

She is a member of the Society ofBookbinders and the local Guild ofDesigner Craftsmen.

EOAC student Aaron Singleton chose to leave school at 16 togo into employment. He progressed to being the manager ofa local store but as he did not find this challenging enough hestarted to look at the alternative options that were available tohim. Aaron had visited friends at universities in Birmingham andSheffield and whilst there took the opportunity to experience afew lectures so that he could sample student life.

“I liked the university environment and could imagine myselfstudying there. At the time I thought that the only way to getinto university was to progress on from school, but I soondiscovered that there are alternative ways for adults to getinto university. I have now applied to join the Access to HEcourse at SWC, which is a one year course that prepares youfor university study. Between now and the start of the coursein September I am working on improving my maths skills onone of the free maths courses on offer at the Evesham OpenAccess Centre (EOAC) based at the College.”

Aaron attends a three hour session at the EOAC, once aweek, where he has an individual learning plan in addition toworking on skills in a small, friendly, supported group. He willtake a Functional Skills Level 2 qualification which will preparehim for the rigours of the Access course in 2013/14.

“Aaron’s commitment and enthusiasm combined with skilledstaff will ensure that he will achieve the first step on his goal ofstarting a Sports degree at university in 2014” said Jane Gibbs,Manager of the EOAC.

The Beauty Therapy Department at SouthWorcestershire College is celebrating afterwinning a medal in the finals of the WorldSkillsUK, the UK’s biggest skills and careers event,for the third consecutive year.

Three students, Nicola Hill (22), Kelly Seward(24) and Anna Smith (22) who are all fromMalvern, were successful in the regional heatsheld in Torquay, each becoming one of thetop 10 highest scoring students in theircategory, and therefore earning much soughtafter places at the finals at the WorldSkills UKshow at the NEC in Birmingham.

During the finals each student had to performa range of treatments whilst being judged onpersonal skills, personal appearance and theway they carried out treatments.

“At the finals for the Intermediate category wehad to perform a 30 minute leg wax, a 50minute deluxe manicure and a facial. It wasimportant that we remained focused on thetreatments that we were giving because wewere being judged by representatives fromVTCT, a specialist awarding body for thehairdressing and beauty sector, and also being

watched by visitors to the Show” said Nicola Hill.

At the closing ceremony of the Showcontestants from all of the Finals competitionsacross all subject areas were invited to anAward Ceremony where the winners wereannounced. Nicola was delighted to learnthat she had won the bronze award, whichwas presented to her by former Blue Peterpresenter Angelica Bell.

Speak Italian

Are you interested in learning this beautiful language? We havea range of italian courses from beginners to advanced. All ofthese groups concentrate on conversation.

Our tutor is Manuella Cherchi, a native speaker who has built upa good following of students who want to learn Italian. Some ofher students have holiday homes in Italy, some have businessconnections and some just want to make their holidayexperience more enjoyable.

Students can join the Speak Italian 1 and 2 courses and thenprogress on to the more advanced conversation group whichwe have established over the past three years.
