Congratulations to:
Ariana Jamieson, Maykala Manu, Piper Atkins and Maddison McGuigan for their outstanding performance in the CHS State 4 x 100m 14 years Girls relay. The girls ran an outstanding race and were involved in a photo finish for 2nd, 3rd and 4th place. After consulting the photo, it was determined that they placed 4th, missing the bronze medal by one hundredth of a second (0.01s) The smallest margin in school sport! Well done girls.
Ariana Jamieson who not only contested the relay but also the long jump, 200m and 100m. Ariana performed well in all of her events. In the 100m she again missed out on a medal by the barest of margins, finishing 4th, just two hundredths (0.02) of a second behind the bronze medallist. In the 200m, she again finished 4th and in the long jump she was placed 8th. Well done Ariana on an amazing carnival.

balancing the school finances, answering phones, assisting with broken limbs,
mowing the grass, fixing broken windows, dealing with finances, photocopying
exams, greeting visitors, purchasing ingredients, managing the website and
School App, measuring out chemicals, assisting students in the classroom,
coordinating the breakfast club, our SASS staff are kept very busy every day. On
behalf on the South Sydney High School Community, I would like to acknowledge
and thank our SASS staff for their significant contribution to our students,
teachers and parents.

Beacon & Opportunity News Dell Computers & South Sydney High Girls STEM into
the future
On Tuesday, a group of girls from years 7-10 went to
the Dell office in St Leonards for a Hack-a-thon and App
development day. Whilst there, we learnt about the
company and women in technology. The wonderful
women from both Dell and United Way helped us view
our future as full of possibilities. We were taken on a
tour of the Dell office and got a unique chance to
experience virtual reality as well as, learn about the Dell
products; they don’t only sell computers! Overall, it was
a unique opportunity and every girl there had a great
time learning about the workplace and the Dell
Company. Our thanks to Ms Kelso who escorted us and
to Ms Stell for her organisation. Thanks also to Dell
Computers and to United Way that supported us on
this day.

Maroubra Bay Public School Spanish Immersion Day
On Monday the 3rd of September 40 Year 6 students from Maroubra Bay Public School came to South Sydney
High as part of our Spanish Immersion Program. Students had a great time preparing and cooking empanadas
in the kitchen, followed by making Day of the Dead skulls out of clay in the art room. Thank you to Ms Lopez
for organising and running the cooking session, and to Mr Baggaley for running the art session. Also a big thank
you to our student volunteers who helped make the day so enjoyable for our visitors.

We thank you for your understanding.
Attention Year 10 Students and Parents
By day she is a Technology / Science and Maths teacher. But on the weekend she is a football warrior princess.
AKA Ms Kylee Heslop.
When Ms Heslop told me some important news this morning, I thought the whole school community should
know. Let’s start at the beginning.
What made you start playing rugby? I wanted to keep my fitness up over winter as I also play touch football
in the summer as well as being second stroke for Coogee Surf Club surf boat racing team.
How long have you being playing rugby? For 12 months now.
What team do you play for? Eastern Suburbs in the Women’s XIV Shute Shield competition.
What position do you play? I play loose head prop.
What does this position involve? I am part of the scrum, lifting in the line outs and the main tackle machine.
LOL
What’s the best thing about playing rugby? Meeting new people and keeping fit.
What’s the worst thing about playing rugby? The bruises and body knocks. (That’s why I always wear long
pants and shirts to school.)
What’s your biggest achievement in rugby so far? I have just received “The Most Improved Player for
2018”in my team which I was pretty shocked to get. As well as this, I have just being chosen to represent the
“Sydney Rays” in the National Rugby championships where I will be playing in the “City” side in the City vs
Country competition.
What does being chosen for this team mean to you? I was very shocked to be chosen in this team, especially
when there were a lot of players who have played for much longer than me as well as played for Australia.
Personally, its shows what hard work and dedication can do and I am very humble for being chosen.
Congratulations Kylee, the school wishes you all the best.

Year 12—Finalisation of the Higher School Certificate
If students are in class and require any medical supplies and/or female hygiene supplies their
teacher will facilitate this. Students should ask to go to the student office or to see the Deputy
Principal. These instances are treated with the utmost sensitivity.
Did you know?
A letter outlining Procedures for the Finalisation of the Higher School Certificate was sent home with all
year 12 students. Please see a copy for your reference below:
Writing News
P & C
Congratulations to the 36 students who received Certificates in the 2018 What Matters? Writing competition
organised by the Whitlam Institute.
Inspired by Gough Whitlam’s commitment to involving young people in the shaping of Australia, this
competition asks school students in years 5 to 12 to answer the question of ‘what matters’ to them, their
family, community, country and world.
What Matters? Is just one part of the Whitlam Institute’s student civic and citizenship program which
features flexible, thought – provoking curriculum-linked activities.

We have a few upcoming events –
The Year 12 Graduation evening is on Thursday 27th September. As is usual, the P&C provides the catering for
this event. We need 4-6 volunteers to help with the set up and cooking – from about 5pm onwards. Please
email us if you can assist.
And we are holding a Bunnings BBQ & cake stall on Sunday 4th November (at the Mascot store). We are
seeking both volunteers to help on the day (from about 7.30am until 4pm), as well as donations of cakes/
biscuits/slices. If you can spare an hour or two of your time on that day, please email us with your availability
and we will add you to our roster. Cake boxes will be available from the front office closer to the event.
The second hand uniform shop is run by the P&C and is open every Friday afternoon from 3.00pm-3.30pm. All items are $3 each (cash only). The shop is located at the back of the school hall. Our next meeting is our AGM, which is then followed by a general meeting. We are always happy to have new members, so please consider coming along. The date for this meeting is 13th November – 7pm in the Staff Common Room. Justine Jennings [email protected]
R U OK Day Thursday September 13th was R U OK? Day, a day designed to highlight the importance of looking out for our
friends by asking the simple question “Are you okay?” The SRC-led initiative ran all week with a cupcake stall
and lunchtime sporting activities designed to get students thinking about their own wellbeing. The SRC
cooked and sold almost 200 cupcakes and over 50 students participated in our lunchtime Oztag, Netball and
Indoor Soccer activities. A big thank you to all of the PDHPE staff and Ms Rivett for all their help.
8 Yellow’s Big Shop As part of our unit on Ratios and Rates, 8 Maths Yellow took advantage of Coles’ Little Shop promotion to explore scale. Our investigation started by calculating how much the original items had been reduced by to create their equivalent minis. Some of the items were easy to calculate but others proved difficult due to the shape and size which lead to an interesting discussion on measurement errors. We then got creative and designed our own “jumbos” to form part of Ms Rivett’s Big Shop. Have a look at what we made.
Parent Teacher Night Feedback
Thank you to the families who completed our quick survey. We have supplied the link again for those who
haven't already responded.
We will also be making some quick phone calls to randomly selected families. These will occur in the next two
weeks or early next term. We thank you in advance for your support. The information collected will inform our
planning for the reporting and Parent Teacher Interview calendar 2019.
Tell us what you think We are very fortunate to have an engaged and supportive parent community. In response to requests for
increased opportunities to access teacher feedback we changed the format of our parent teacher nights.
Instead of one night for all years, we split the year groups across two nights. We will be seeking feedback from
parents as to how we can best meet community needs. As a starting point we would appreciate it if you could
take the time to answer the three quick questions below:
