CONTENTS

with our membership as our guiding light, we were able to provide clear, concise solutions for issues that affect our profession.

Never have I held dentistry more near to my sense of self or closer to my perception of purpose than during this past year of my presidency. During my year as President-Elect and even in the weeks and days leading to my induction, I could have never imagined where these months would lead. I did, however, know that I wished to remain cognizant of the strides we had made in the past as we continued to aspire towards our future. With that would come the recognition that we simply could not remain content with the status quo. To fully embrace progress, we must be willing to welcome change. As Margaret Mead once reminded us, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, concerned citizens can change the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has.” I was fortunate to fi nd that coalition of members yearning for change in each and every one of you and in the dedication you so dutifully displayed. I could not fathom leading the Society alone; it was only by the continuous commitment and clairvoyance of our staff that we were able to keep our ideas moving forward. A well-deserved thank you to Jennifer for herassiduous drive and to Sandra and Krystal who all makean unstoppable force and without whom I could not have accomplished even half of what, together, we all did. I also want to thank my parents, my sister and my staff who all were instrumental in keeping everything together as I embarked on my journey as your leader. A special thanks to my good friend who has alwaysprovided great insight in the creation of these President’s Messages.

I hope that my time in this position has reminded you all that the onus is now on us. As they say, we don’t come closer to our destination by owning a map, but by taking the diffi cult fi rst steps in the right direction. We don’t only fi ght for dentistry during our visits to the capitol, we fi ght for dentistry through the work we do, the smiles we create and the lives we touch. Now is a time of shifting paradigms in which we must focus on building alliances, not burning bridges. It is a time atwhich the horizon is ablaze with the promise of our aspirations and a time at which I am deeply humbled to have served both you and theSociety.

4 l 2013 SKCDS SPRING QUARTERLY

Just as the seasons have come and gone over this past year, my term as President has brought with it the heat of debate countered by the cool breezes of collaboration. As my time in this position comes to a close, I am proud to report that, although it was an experience beyond my anticipations, together we were successful in our ambitions.

Stepping into this role, my premier goal was to encouragemember engagement in an effort to create a Society that was more relevant and further aligned with the needs and best interests of our member dentists. In front of my very eyes, I watched as you all became engaged, chimed in, shared opinions and showed up in numbers to voice your concerns and demand better solutions. You participated because you cared. And you cared because you held the fi rm belief that, together, we can create change.

I quickly learned that the change we so desired doesn’t stem from the status quo, but rather demands that adversity be our greatest teacher and guide. While I wasn’t prepared to deal with a major crisis, I found that, when one is brimming under the surface, there is no better option than to embrace it and face it immedi-ately. Your actions and your support helped us to not only fi ght, but to defeat midlevel provider legislation and preserve the scope of our practice of dentistry in the hands of professionals who are properly trained to provide appropriate care. My goal was to engagemembers and in doing so, we engaged more legisla-tors than ever before. Though the discourse was often contentious, this year taught us all that controversy doesn’t necessarily beget animosity; when we stand up for our values and demand change in line with those beliefs, we can often gain the respect of those with an opposing mindset.

Certainly, our annual Gala was proof enough of the respect we gained as we brought together not only our dental membership, family and friends, but also enjoyed the company of some of those very legislators whom we had challenged. The night was an incontrovertible success, having sold out before it even began and raising an unprecedented $164,000! These statistics scream engagement and are further reinforced by the fact that in the upcoming SKCDS elections, we have more people

running than ever before to represent our profession. This is the strength of our dental community, that at a time which requires us to carve our own path, we come together in solid support of our future objectives.

As my term wound down, I found myself refl ecting on the lessons I’ve been taught through the challenges we have faced. Writing these articles, working with dental organizations and representing dentistry on a local and state level has been a wonderful treat and is certainly one that I will miss dearly. The duties and responsibilitiesI have toward organized dentistry may continue to evolve over the next years but what will not change is the valuable guidance I received this past year and the subsequent lessons I can take with me for our future endeavors. While the engagement of membership was certainly the platform which I held most dear to my presidency, I discovered that I can’t simply demand your participation and involvement without becoming more familiar with the needs of our members; having direct knowledge of the questions, concerns, fears and expectations of our Society is the key to being a successful leader. In attempting to forge deeper connections with you, the men and women I served during my term, I found that there was much I could learn from each one of you. You donated your time and efforts on our committees, task forces and the Council. You communicated at a basal level with one another and with our greater community. You stood together as one and demanded that your voice be heard…and it was.

This year has been one of building community and alliances. In light of this goal, we pressed forward in creating a strong relationship with our Dental School at University of Washington and, in particular, earned the support of their new visionary leader, Dr. Joel Berg. Such a partnership lay inherent in our shared desire to create a new generation of dental professionals with the skill and foresight to take on the many challenges that our community will undoubtedly face in coming years. I look forward to stimulating a long-term relationship and bond with the students, faculty and School to ensure a bright and prosperous future for our profession.

As we build alliances, it’s important to note that we also worked on relationships with our state and national associations. As many of our members become involved not only at the local level but increasingly on a larger scale, we fi nd some of our own membership serving at all three levels, allowing the creation of positive and amicable relationships throughout. Differences of opinion are inherent to any situation of organized dentistry and it is these opposing views that help us more deeply decipher our joint goals. Discussion and debate are paramount to ensuring great outcomes and,

The Seattle-King County Dental Foundation has established several awards to recognize individuals who help advance the Foundation’s work in eliminating dental pain and infection. During our most recent Gala, the Board of Directors honored three individuals for their contributions. Please join us in congratulating them for their work.

The fi rst award, The Lifetime Achievement Award, is presented to the Seattle-King County Dental Society member who has contributed substantially and consistently to the work of the Dental Society and Foundation for at least ten years. Dr. Karen Sakuma was presented with this fi rst annual award. Dr. Sakuma was president of the Dental Society when it was decided to form the Dental Foundation. Without her tireless work, the Seattle-King County Dental Foundation would not have come into existence. In addition, she has been a long-term fi nancial supporter of theFoundation.

Community Partner of the Year is presented to a non-dentist who has contributed time and/or treasure to the initiatives of the Dental Foundation. The Board chose to recognize Mr. Robert Brown of Max Technologies for his energetic and generoussupport of the Foundation’s annual Gala. Mr. Brown has been on the Event Planning Committeefor over ten years and works tirelessly to secureauction items and helps make the Gala as successful as possible.

Dr. John R. Fitzgerald was selected as the Donated Care Award recipient. This award is presented to the SKCDS member who has made a signifi cant impact on access to dental care through his/her donated dental care in our community. Dr. Fitzgerald has been a tireless volunteer at the Johnny Johnson Memorial Dental Clinic at PROVAIL. Please see his accompanying article (page 12) for more information about his volunteer efforts.

Each year, the Foundation Board will award these awards along with the Volunteer of the Year award at its annual Gala. Watch for nomination forms

Gala a HUGE success! The Seattle-King County Dental Foundation held another successful Auction and Gala on Saturday, March 16th. Our sold-out crowd held its very own “Casino Royale” at the Herban Feast in SoDo. Gambling, wine-tasting, a live auction and GREAT fun was had by all! The photo booth and red carpet pictures next to the hot Barrier Audi R8 sports car started the evening off in a party spirit.

Guests did not lose sight of the important cause they were there to support, however. Their generosity allowed the Foundation to raise $164,000—one of the highest amounts ever raised! These funds will be used by the Foundationto further their mission to eliminate all dental infection and pain among King County residents.

We were also honored to be joined by some special guests that evening. State Representatives Richard DeBolt, Cathy Dahlquist, Mike Hope and Jay Rodne all participated in our Foundation’s efforts. Ms. Samantha Colton, deputy director of the Reagan Fund, also joined us. We were honored to host Dr. Joel Berg, dean of the UW Dental School, and Dr. Jeffrey Cole, president of the Academy of General Dentistry, and Dr. Linda Edgar, president-elect of the Academy of General Dentistry. The Seattle-King County Dental Foundation appreciates the time and support of so many dignitaries.

We owe a special debt of gratitude to the Event Planning Committee so ably chaired Dr. Cynthia R. Pauley. Other Committee members included Dr. Karim Alibhai, Dr. Franco Audia, Mr. Robert Brown, Dr. Michelle Caldier, Dr. Sarah Fraker, Dr. Sabrina Habib, Ms. Robin Haley, Ms. Lisa Hess, Ms. Bre Hill, Ms. Tracie Kellogg, Dr. Princy Rekhi, Dr. Karen Sakuma, Dr. Nina Svino, Dr. Rick Taylor and Dr. Amy Winston. They worked very hard to make the Gala a night to remember and they succeeded!

Please remember to express your appreciation to all the wonderful corporatesponsors of our event. Without their generosity, we wouldn’t have raised nearly as much money for our important cause. So, please thank thefollowing Premier Sponsors: Constantine Builders, DP, Inc., Pacifi c ContinentalBank, Swedish Medical Center Foundation and the Washington Dentists’Insurance Agency. Underwriters: NORDIC and the Washington Dental Service Foundation. Gold Sponsors: Barrier Audi, Burkhart Dental Supply, Durham Law Offi ces, PLLC, First Citizens Bank, Henry Schein and Physicians & Dentists Credit Bureau.

Finally, we would like to thank Brookside Dental as well as Max Technologies for their donations to the entertainment. Thank you!

We will keep you posted on the 2014 date and location. We can defi nitely promise you that it will be another fun evening—and one that you will NOT want to miss! (More photos on page 8)

GIVE KIDS A SMILEFEBRUARY, 2013 February in Seattle not only signaled the nearing end of winter, it also heralded the 10th year of the American Dental Association’s Give Kids A Smile month! Started in 2003 as a way for ADA members to join with others in the community to provide dental services to underserved children, the Seattle-King County Dental Society has been thrilled to support our members every step of the way in their selfl ess efforts to provide desperately needed oral health services to the children in our community. At the time of printing, theestimated number of kids seen nationwide is 403,074 in 2013 alone! The data is still coming in on the number of children treated by SKCDS members, but we have already seen indications of over $17,630 in care provided to over 236 children! With four member dentists and their stellar staff members participating this year, we are most defi nitely impressed by those numbers. We are thankful to all of the dentists who contributed to this year’s success. Additionally, we would like to thank the Washington State Dental Foundation for their contribution of $1,500 which helped to offset the cost of the goody bags presented to the children who received care. We acknowledge that dentists alone will not be able to solve the ever-growing oral health access crisis. We urge our members to continue their

participation in this program and champion the cause of providing access to oral health care within our community.

“Providing dental care to children in need is really the least I can do. Children are our most precious blessings. To help an indigent child in need of dental care, not only helps the child’s health, it soothes the parents’ heart. As a parent myself, I can understand the broken heart a parent must have to be unable to afford proper oral health care for their children. I am so thankful to my staff who supported me for the last three years and who have volunteered their own time to provide care and education to these kids.” –Lina Kim, DDS

who’s ever volunteered at the PROVAIL Johnny Johnson Memorial Clinic—a place dear to my heart—along with the hundreds of dental professionals who donate clinical talents to dozens of other organizations working to improve oral health—especially for disadvantaged kids and people with disabilities.

It is hard to believe that I started volunteering when the Clinic opened in 1962—over 50 years ago!—joining a handful of dentists who committed one half day a month to help an underserved population in desperate need. We didn’t set out to change the world. But, in many small ways, I know we have.

Back then, it was the only clinic of its kind in the country, specifically designed to treat patients with developmental or physical disabilities. Over the years, our patient load steadily increased to where we now complete over 1,600 procedures annually for many patients who otherwise would have no access to dental care at all.

These are often very challenging cases to treat. Few patients brush and fewer patients brush well. The decay rate is high and periodontal infections

are prevalent. Involuntary patient movement in the dental chair means it typically requires an hour to perform a 15-minute procedure.

So who volunteers for such tough duty? We do. Because the rewards are far greater than the time we invest.

Programs Can’t Survive Without Donated Care

Like so many other programs which serve the less fortunate in our community, the PROVAIL Dental Clinic needs new volunteers in order to serve more patients, especially now, during these challenging and uncertain financial times.

The twenty some dentists who donate time at the Clinic can barely keep up with demand. It is imperative to the mission that we attract more dentists, and I respectfully ask my Dental Society colleagues to seriously consider joining us. Beyond providing direct patient care, your contributions are amplified by teaching when students have clinic hours there. Our students are UW Dental School juniors and seniors with hygiene students from local community colleges also rotating through

as part of their training. So, by volunteering at the PROVAIL Dental Clinic, you’re not only serving patients in real need, you also help train the next generation of dental professionals in a disease prevention program which attempts to overcome a nearly total absence of dental home care.

Perhaps equally important, your volunteer service can inspire the next generation to move forward in their professional lives with a strong commitment to community service—and that is good for the causes, good for the profession and good for your business. When your patients learn of your donating to a community program, they are encouraged to solicit and make referrals to your practice. Please contact Francis Olsen at (206) 826-1078 or by emailing her at [email protected] to inquire.

As for the Award, I am Extremely Proud

We do not volunteer our time and professional expertise to receive recognition, though that is always nice and greatly appreciated. We volunteer to give something back—to pay our good fortune forward—and I can honestly say I have received much more than I have given. Thank you for the opportunity to serve with you. I am honored the Donated Care Award has been bestowed upon me, and feel truly blessed to be part of our great profession.

Around the dental offi ce I am agreeable as well. This sometimes makes for a real smooth running operation and other times makes for some odd happenings. For example, my last dental assistant starting calling me Munk. Not Dr. Munk, or Doc, but just Munk. Such as, “Hey Munk do you want the forceps now?” This was the mode of greeting when I was in junior high and seemed very grown- up and sophisticated at the time. “Hey Munk, throw me the basketball” etc. Being the agreeable sort, I let her get away with it and actually found it quite entertaining. The patients did not seem to take offense and I doubt they have ever viewed me as being very professional anyway. Why is it that the patients remain loyal to us when the majority of us are such doofuses? (Perhaps the fi rst time that word has appeared in plural form in print.) I have always avoided staff meetings for this reason as well. Being the agreeable sort, I would just agree to whatever the staff asked me to do anyway. By avoiding the staff meeting, I fi gured it would give them less chance to ask me for stuff. I always go along with what the patients say as well. I mean really, who could fi ght over a stupid lower denture anyway? I used to work in my Dad’s store and he taught me the customer is always right, even when they’re wrong. Would you like me to refund your money for this denture? Would you like me to throw it in the food processor? See how easy that is? I think that on the whole, being agreeable has been a good thing for me, despite the marriage thing and all. That’s all for now from Ballard.

I just may be too agreeable. Some might term it wishy-washy, some indecisive, but I like to call it agreeable. I’m not sure how I came to be the way I am—is anyone? My parents certainly weren’t too agreeable. They both liked a good fi ght better than anyone. I have three sisters and if that is not enough to turn a man into a disagreeable wretch, I don’t know what is. I had my share of fi st-fi ghts in junior high like the rest of the kids I grew up with but somehow did not develop into a fi ghter as I grew up. I’m more of a glider than a fi ghter. There are certainly some advantages to being agreeable. It can save you some time in tasks that ordinarily, for less agreeable people, might take a long time. For example, thirty years ago or so, I woke up one Sunday morning and read the Sunday paper like I always did, and happened to read an article about how the price of Seattle housing was going up. Mind you, this is the sort of article which no doubt has appeared in the Sunday paper about a zillion times in the past, but, for some reason, it got my attention this particular day. I was a contented single man living in a cozy studio apartment with fi ve single girls living down the hall. This was not a bad place to live! Anyway, for somereason, I called a realtor and said I wanted to buy a house. Of course she knew where one was, and thirty minutes later I was standing on the porch of said house. She let me in and I walked around inside the house for a few minutes. I noticed the house had a kitchen and bathroom, the features I was looking for at the time. I told her I would take it. This was a surprise to her. How many houses have you looked at she asked? Just this one I said. See, she didn’t realize I was agreeable. Why should buying a house take any longer than buying a pair of shoes? There are some problems being the agreeable sort. For example, shortly after I bought that house, I met this girl. She ended up living with me in that house within a few days and about a year later, she told me that we were getting married. I don’t remember responding to that announcement in any manner except stunned silence. But, being the agreeable sort, I went along with the idea and thirty years later, that girl still lives in my house. I still don’t know what hit me and intend to think about it deeply one of these days.
