REGISTRATION 2017-18August is coming and that means it’s time to register students for school. This year, South Hamilton has some exciting changes for students and families.

South Hamilton parents will now be able to register their students online from the comfort of their own home! The district has implemented online registration for the 2017-18 school year.

In the coming days, a video will be posted to the new school website at www.shhawks.net. This video will walk parents through the process to register their stu-dents online. There is also a short FAQ section to answer any questions about the registration process. Parents will be notified via email once this video is available.

For those parents who do not have internet access at home, a good working computer or would just like some help through the process, the district will offer the following dates at the school:

Monday, August 7 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.Wednesday, August 9 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Location: Elementary due to construction at the MS/HSIt is important to note that even when registering at the school, all registrations still must be completed online. Parents will be provided with a laptop here at the school to use in the registration process. Help will be available for those having difficulty getting through the system.

Another new feature this year, is online payment processing with a credit/debit card. When the time comes to write my beginning of the new school year newsletter article I typically think…wow, it is about time! Characteris-tically there have been very few people in school facilities during the summer months and it can become a bit lonely without the students and much of the South Hamilton workforce. This summer has been no different, in that, I have missed the kids and the staff, however, the facilities have been once again occupied and bustling with construction crew members – sometimes 40 or more on campus at a time - using most every type of tool imaginable to raze, cut, hammer, and replace most every element in the middle/high school building. Thus, the hallways that are routinely silent in June, July, and early August have been anything but abandoned.

As most of our stakeholders are aware, the project to upgrade the middle/high school facilities has been on-going for the last 14 months and slated to be finished up in the coming month or so. However, as of today, July 12th, 2017, there seems to be a great deal to be com-pleted before the students enter the building for the 2017-2018 school year. We have been assured the project will be near completion, however, if there are still some items to check off the final punch list, our goal, “…will still [be to] provide students a safe environment with high educational standards…” – as the new school year begins.

Welcome back to South Hamilton!

From Mr. Howard....

2017-18 REGISTRATION continued....

Families who are new to the district will also register online but they will use a slightly different process. There will be a video posted online for new enrollees to watch, as well.

Parents/guardians of 7-12 students will no longer have to attend the acceptable use policy meetings at the school. South Hamilton Technology Director, Loyal Winborn, has put all of the informa-tion into video format and parents must view this video online. During the registration process, parents will sign off that they have watched the video and agree to the computer guidelines as outlined by the district’s acceptable use policy (AUP).

FROM THE MS/HS GUIDANCE OFFICE LINDSAY GELDER

Welcome back to another school year! I would like to take this opportunity to share my role and philosophy as a coun-selor in our 7-12 building. The South Hamilton Counseling Department provides a comprehensive program to all students in grades K-12 focused on student achievement. The majority of the work I do as a counselor is directly with students and includes the following:

1.Individual Counseling- I will meet with students to address career, personal and social needs as needed on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis.

2.Responsive Services- I design and provide services and activities to meet students’ needs and concerns.

3.Counseling Curriculum- I collaborate with other teachers and present lessons in the classroom and during seminar time. These are targeted at specific knowledge, skills, and abilities that are relevant to students.

Indirectly, I can provide referrals for additional services out-side of the school setting. I also collaborate with teachers, administration, and community members to increase student success. Please feel free to contact me at any time or stop by with questions or concerns.

Schedules- The first semester schedules are complete and may be viewed on Infinite Campus. If a student wishes to make changes, he or she may e-mail me at [email protected]. Students have the first week of school to make any necessary changes as well.

A NOTE FROM THEELLSWORTH/JEWELL/STANHOPE

POLICE DEPARTMENT

With the school year soon to be underway, it means children will be walking to school, and to bus stops. I would like to ask all parents to take a few minutes to sit down and talk to your children about safety when it comes to walking to school. Children should be reminded to use the sidewalks when available to keep them off the street and out of harms way. If a sidewalk is not available, children and all pedestri-ans that are walking are required to walk against traffic. This allows them to see cars that might be approaching; it is not only the safest way to walk, but it is also the law.

Parents are also reminded that children riding bikes to school are required to follow the same rules as cars. That means they must ride on the right side of the street if there is not a sidewalk available. They also must stop at all stop signs. Zig-zagging back and forth on the street is very dangerous. I would also, strongly recommend that your child wear a helmet to protect them if they would fall from their bike. With the sun low in the sky in the morning and drivers fight-ing glare on the windshields, it makes it very hard to see, especially if a child or bike darts out in front of them. Remind your child to be alert, look both ways when crossing an inter-section, don’t assume that the car is going to see them and stop - making sure that it’s clear before crossing.

Taking a few brief minutes to go over some of these rules will make it a safe school year for both children and parents.Steve Butler, Chief of Police701 Main St., Jewell, IA 50130Phone: 515-827-5477 Fax: 515-827-5425

JUNIOR TIPSAugust Tips

• Learn about college fairs and information nights in your area. Visit ICANsucceed.org/calendar and ICANsucceed.org/col-legefairs for dates and times. • Talk to your parents and your school counselor about where you want to go to college. Make sure you’re on the right track by taking the necessary courses during your junior year.• Keep your grades up. Colleges look at your overall GPA through all four years of high school.• Interested in attending one of Iowa’s public universities? Learn about the Regent Admission Index requirements. For more information, contact the admission office at the respective university.• Review your college savings plan; start saving money now if you haven’t already done so.• Learn about careers that interest you with an assessment at ACTprofile.org.• Prepare for college with the ICAN e-newsletter; sign up at ICANsucceed.org/impact.

September Tips• Attend college fairs in your area and meet with college representatives who visit your high school. The Golden Circle Col-lege Fair is the largest college fair in Iowa, with approximately 150 colleges represented.• Check with your high school counselor to register for the Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test (PSAT®). These scores are used to determine National Merit Scholars. South Hamilton juniors will test on Wednesday, October 11th at Bethesda Lutheran Church from 8:30- noon. The cost of the exam is $15.• Discuss with your parents and high school counselor what is important to you in a college (i.e., size, type, location, pro-grams, facilities, cost, academic quality, etc.).• Begin gathering information about colleges that interest you and start a list of those you would like to visit.

SENIOR TIPSAugust Tips

• Your senior grades really do matter. Colleges look at your overall grade point average (GPA) through all four years of high school. It’s not too late to improve your GPA.• Finalize your list of colleges. Decide which colleges best suit you and your career interests. Review your campus visit notes and compare schools on academic, cultural, and financial fit.• Find information on admission, scholarships, and financial aid for the top schools you’re considering. Take note of admis-sion and financial aid deadlines.• Register now to take the September ACT if you wish to improve your score.• Beware of scholarship search and financial aid service organizations that charge a fee for service. Check with your high school counselor or search at no cost.• Visit ICANsucceed.org/fsaid to learn about the FSA ID username and password. You and a parent each need an FSA ID for your financial aid form. Print a list of items you need to fill out the FAFSA at ICANsucceed.org/fafsachecklist.• Let ICAN assist you through the college planning and financial aid process at no cost. Visit ICANsucceed.org/apt to sched-ule an appointment online.

September Tips• Be aware of deadlines. Begin or continue to send in applications for admission. Most colleges accept online applications, and some may waive the application fee for applying online. Keep copies of paper applications and write down the date you submit online applications.• Register to take the Oct. 4 SAT® by Sept. 9 and/or the Oct. 25 ACT® by Sept. 19 if you have not already taken them. You may also retake the test if you are unhappy with your previous score. Check with your high school counselor or college admissions office before you retake the test.• Research scholarship possibilities at the library and high school counseling office. Ask your teachers, high school counselor and/or employers to write letters of recommendation for your admission and scholarship applications.• Attend college fairs in your area and meet with college representatives who visit your high school. The Golden Circle Col-lege Fair is the largest college fair in Iowa, with approximately 150 colleges represented.• Attend a financial aid presentation with your parents. Ask your school counselor when presentations take place or visit ICANsucceed.org/calendar.• Visit ICANsucceed.org/FAFSAreadyIA to find a FAFSA Ready Iowa completion assistance event near you. Volunteers will help you file your FAFSA for free.

1st BYTE PROGRAM

The South Hamilton Community School District will again utilize 1st BYTE program offered through First State Bank in Jewell/Webster City. This is an electronic meal program that automatically withdraws from the participant’s personal bank account and deposits into the family meal account. With 1st BYTE parents/guardians do not need to send with the child money for school meals; the parent/guardian’s checking or savings account is automatically debited; and the child’s school account receives an automatic deposit. 1st BYTE is an option that makes paying for school meals easy and hassle free. Deposits to the family meal account may also be completed online using your credit/debit card or with e-check, starting this school year.

To enroll in 1st BYTE, participants simply complete and return the authorization form provided by the South Hamil-ton Community School District. The participant’s checking or savings account is debited for the indicated amount on the authorization form. The program has three payment options: the 1st of the month; the 15th of the month; and twice a month on the 1st and 15th. Participant’s accounts are debited for the same amount each time unless other-wise notified. Funds remaining in the family meal account at the end of the school year, with the exception of seniors, are carried forward into the new school year. No automatic withdrawals occur during June, July, and August.

Participants in 1st BYTE must enroll annually and will remain enrolled in the program the entire school year until South Hamilton Community School receives notification to cease transactions or there is a change in financial institu-tion accounts. In the event the price of a meal ticket chang-es, participants will receive written notification. 1st BYTE is a convenient and practical way for parents to guarantee their children receive nutritional school meals. To partici-pate in the South Hamilton Community School District’s 1st BYTE program complete the authorization form available on the website or at registration and return it with a void check to the Superintendent’s office. Call 515-827-5479 with any questions.

UNPAID MEAL CHARGE POLICY

The Federal Government required all schools to have policies in place regarding negative lunch account balances.

Families will be notified of an outstanding balance once the balance reaches negative $25.00. Families will be notified by email and/or phone by district staff. Upon the communication of this balance notification, parents/guardians will have three (3) days to pay or make arrangements to pay outstanding student balances. Parents with negative student accounts after this notification period will be asked to send a sack lunch from home until negative balances are taken care of and/or a payment plan schedule is arranged.

When the family balance reaches $0.00, the family may charge no more than $25 to this account. After a family account is in arrears by $25 or more and the parent/guardian does not make payment to the nutrition account, they will be notified that the Nutrition Service Department will provide an alternate reimbursable meal for breakfast and lunch. Pay-ment for these meals will be charged to the student’s account.

Students with negative balances who do not bring a sack lunch from home will receive a “sandwich lunch” in place of the regular hot lunch that complies with USDA requirements.

Students on free or reduced priced meals will not be allowed to purchase seconds or additional ala’carte items unless they have a positive lunch balance.

SCHOOL MEAL PRICES School lunch prices will be $2.75 for PrepK-6 students and $2.90 for 7-12 students. Reduced-price lunch remains at 40-cents. Breakfast will be served at the elementary and mid-dle school/high school at a cost of $1.75 for PrepK-6 students and $1.80 for 7-12 students. Reduced-price breakfast remains at 30-cents.

The district uses the Infinite Campus computerized meal system. If you would like to consider donating any instruments your family is no longer using, it would be greatly appreciated. These donated instruments help students perform who may otherwise not have an opportunity to participate! If you would like to sell an instrument, please contact Miss Macdonald with your information, as she has a contact sheet with used instruments for sale for incoming band families. ATHLETIC PASSES

Athletic passes are once again available for students, parents and families for the 2017-18 home athletic events. A student pass is $50, an adult pass is $100 and a family pass is $225. These passes allow entry to all 2017-18 HOME athletic events. They are optional and available at registra-tion. Please note these passes are not valid for any district or state event.

FOOTBALL GAME BEHAVIOR

Younger students at our home football games like to play football and “rough-it.” Parents should advise their young-sters that they are to watch the game and are not to rough-it behind the bleachers or on the north end of the field. The youngsters will be warned to stop and upon a second warning, will be escorted from the athletic field. Students are asked not to bring footballs along to the games. If they decide to do so, they will be asked to give the football to an administrator, who may return it to them later. Your cooper-ation is appreciated as we do not want someone seriously injured.

TO ALL SOUTH HAMILTON ATHLETIC PARENTS

It has always been the policy of the South Hamilton Athletic Department that every parent of a student athlete is expected to work concessions at one home athletic event per year whether it is during volley-ball, football, basketball, wrestling, track, baseball or softball. A sign-up sheet will be available at the Fall Kick-off and the first two home football games, if need-ed. After registration, individuals with a student athlete will be assigned to work at one event; usually selecting an event in which their son or daughter is not partic-ipating. It will be the parents responsibility to find a replacement if unable to work at the scheduled event. At South Hamilton, we are lucky to have individuals without student athletes willing to volunteer their time to work concessions. If you would like to volunteer please sign up or call the school at 515-827-5418.The money generated for the athletic department through concessions helps fund all sports at South Hamilton. We would like to take this time to thank each and every one of you for your help and we look forward to another year of fun and success with South Hamilton sports.

SCHOOL ACTIVITY CALENDAR

Once again this year, the school has printed an activity calendar for the school year. These calendars can be picked up during registration from any of the school offices. School activity schedules are subject to change and it would seem as soon as this calendar is printed, it is often out of date. The most up to date calendar can be found via the school website at www.s-hamilton.k12.ia.us or www.heartofiowacon-ference.org

South Hamilton CSD and the Heart of Iowa Conference will continue using the scheduling tool rSchool Today. This online tool allows all of the schools in the conference to stay on top of any additions or changes to the school activity calendars. It is really the most accurate way to know what is happening at South Hamilton. This site is used not only for athletic events, but for ALL activities within our school. The calendar also allows anyone to subscribe to the events they wish to be notified of regarding any changes or updates. A subscriber can be notified of all changes via email or cell phone or both. Look for the Notify Me link at the top right hand corner of the calendar to subscribe via email and/or cell phone. The subscribe link will allow you to sync the informa-tion with your Google or iCal calendar system on your smart phone.

As a district and as a conference we hope this is a benefit to our parents and community members. The school activi-ties calendar can be found at www.heartofiowaconference.org. Just click on the link to South Hamilton. It can also be accessed directly on the main page of the school website by clicking on the Calendar tab and dropping down to click on the HOIAC activity calendar link.

ATHLETIC FORMS

Forms for concussions, physicals, insurance information and emergency contact informa-tion can be picked up in the MS/HS Office.

Forms may also be downloaded during on-line registration. All forms must be turned in prior to the first day of practice. Athletic physicals are good for 13 months, so depending upon when the physical was done last year, your athlete may or may not need one prior to practicing.

Parents/guardians are responsible for informing all appropriate staff members about pertinent health needs.

Kindergarten Parents: Please have the required records ready to turn in at registration.

*PROOF OF AGE (birth certificate is best) - we will copy your original - or other official document that can verify date of birth. A social security card does not provide proof of age. You can contact the Clerk of Court in the county of birth or Iowa Department of Public Health Vital Records, Lucas State Office Building Des Moines, IA 50319-0075; Phone 515.281.4944

*PHYSICAL EXAM - we will accept an exam within the past year. Proof of lead screening is now verified at the state level.

Pain reliever is not kept in

stock at the elementary building as it is in the MS-HS building.

If your child has chronic headaches or needs something for orthodontic braces, etc., you may provide your own to keep there. Parents are responsible for providing emergency meds either pre-scribed or recommended by your physician such as epinephrine or Benedryl for their child’s particular allergy/reaction. Students are, byState law, allowed to carry their own asthma inhalers unless there is a specific reason for the nurse to keep it in the office. Health Information Sheets: These salmon-colored sheets are only for new students to the district, preschool, prep-k and kindergarten students OR to update any information previously given. If there is no change, you do not need to fill out a new sheet for your child.

Food Allergies: If your child needs any modification in his/her meals due to an allergy to food intolerance, you must have a PHYSICIAN fill out a form (available for download at registration) for food service to provide a special lunch. Snacks should be addressed with your child’s teacher and the nurse.

Lunch: If your child brings a cold lunch to school, we do not allow soda pop as part of lunch. They are welcome to take milk available at school with their cold lunch or bring something appropriate. The “no-pop-at-lunch” rule applies to visitors as well. Thanks!Health Screenings: K-4 heights and weights will be charted shortly after school begins, followed by vision checks. Fifth and sixth grade height/weight/vision checks will be sometime second semester. Hearing screens are usually done sometime during the year by the AEA for specific groups. You may request screenings at any time if you suspect a problem. As always, you will be noti-fied only if any results need further attention. I usually send a form home, so please remember to check those school bags!

Please feel free to contact me at home (515.826.3396) or at school a few days before classes actually begin (515.827.5096 – Elementary; 515.827.5418 - MS/HS) for any questions or concerns you have.

Enjoy what little is left of summer and see you soon!!. Vicki Olthoff, RN
