COMMITTEE MEMBERSfor 2017-2018 School Year

South Hamilton Community School District Superintendent Ken Howard is looking for interested parents and community members to serve on the 2017-2018 School Improve-ment Advisory Committee (SIAC). The School Improvement Advisory Committee meets up to two times a year, and is charged with annually making recommendations to the board with regard to progress achieved with annual improvement goals for the state indicators that address reading, mathematics, and science, and progress achieved with other locally determined indicators that address the core content areas.

Within the SIAC, each district in Iowa, to the extent possible, is required to have com-mittee membership that is a balanced representation with regard to race, gender, national origin, and disability. Membership includes students, parents, teachers, administrators, and representatives from the local community.

A brief list of some of the SIAC goals and purposes:

• Understand and exemplify the school improvement process.• Work collaboratively to support the district and student• Connect with community businesses and area service agencies in regard to school improvement.• Review and receive reports regarding curriculum processes and educational pro-gramming.• Review of district goals, analyze student achievement data, and make recommenda-tions• Every five years conduct a community needs assessment. Completed; to be re-viewed, discussed and recommendations made.

Superintendent Howard is requesting that anyone who has served on the SIAC and any parents or community members who are interested in serving on the SIAC, to please contact the Superintendent’s office (827-5479). The initial South Hamilton SIAC meeting is scheduled for WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 17th starting at 6:15 p.m. in the Middle/High School Library. Refreshments will be provided.

FOUNDATION NEWSThe South Hamilton School District Foundation Board met on November 15, 2017. Board members present were President Marv Penning, Vice-President Jeanne Winter-mote, Kristi Busch, Justin Deppe, Mindy Harris, Kristy Luppes, Tara Northrop, Dan Scarrow, Jessica Scheller, and Gina Stoecker.

The Foundation will have a raffle on Friday Dec 1, 2017 during the half-time of boys’ basketball game for three Winter VIP Parking Spots. The cost of the raffle tickets will be $5/ticket. The scholarship/award working information sheet for Charles E. & Virginia I. Jewell family scholarship was approved by the board.

The Foundation will hold a fundraiser “Trivia Night” on Friday March 2, 2018 in the MS/HS Atrium. Check the flyer in the newsletter and register in the superintendent’s office for an evening of fun! Bricks will continue to be sold for “Leave a Legacy” project. The Hawk Shoppe class will engrave the bricks during second semester schedule. The funds from the fundraisers will benefit South Hamilton Student Edu-cation

Did you love playing in your high school pep band? Do you enjoy listening to the Hawk Pep Band pump up the crowd at South Hamilton sporting events? Do you know how to play an instrument? Have you just always wanted to learn how? If you answered “Yes!” to even one of these questions, then we want you to dust off your horn and join the members of the Hawk Pep Band for our 2nd annual “Community Pep Band” on Friday, January 5th 2012 during our home basketball game. We will also be doing a music booster meal that evening in the cafeteria. Anyone who has played an instrument before is encouraged to participate. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t played for a few years or since high school; everyone is welcome regardless of skill level. We will have a short “rehearsal” with the cur-rent band students at 5:00pm, and then we will play before the game, at halves, and between games (which begins at 6:00pm). We’ll play many popular tunes and maybe some you haven’t heard before! There’s no need to practice any music beforehand. The current Hawk Pep Band will be playing along with us, so feel free to just come and “wing it.” One thing is for sure; it’s going to be a lot of fun! Remember, this is open to anyone who wants to play so please spread the word to anyone who you think might be interested! If you would like to participate in our 2nd annual “Community Pep Band,” please RSVP to Ms. Alexa Gibbs, Director of Bands at South Hamilton via phone or email by Wednesday, December 20th, 2017 with your name and instrument. IOWA COLLEGE APPLICATION CAMPAIGNDuring the month of October, students in grades 9-12 participated in the Iowa College Application Campaign sponsored by the Iowa College Access Net-work. The purpose of this program is to get students exposed to the options for post-secondary education and training. All seniors were strongly encouraged to apply to a college, university, or vocational program. During seminar time (the last 30 minutes of each school day), students completed a variety of activities related to college options.

Door DecoratingThere was a pennant decorating contest in which students decorated a pennant with their favorite college, university, or military branch. Four judges selected the doors that were the most decorative. First place went to Ms. Gibbs and her seminar and Mr. Entner’s seminar was the run-ner-up.

Trivia ContestThere was a daily trivia question in the morning announcements related to Iowa Colleges and Universities or scavenger hunt questions in which students had to find out the answer by asking the teachers. 1st place- Mr. Entner’s 10th grade2nd place- Mrs. Voga’s 12th grade They both enjoyed an ice cream social during seminar time.

Senior Iowa College TriviaWhich institution has also gone by the names of the Iowa State Normal School, Iowa State Teachers College, State College of Iowa, and its current name? The University of Northern Iowa. Seniors answered questions about Iowa Colleges and Universities during sem-inar. Over the month, the seminar that had the most correct answers was Mrs. Voga’s. They received a trophy.

College ApplicationsIowa Central and Des Moines Area Community College reps were here to help students complete applications during seminar. Students interested in applying to other colleges had time during seminar to complete applications, look for scholarships, write essays for applications, and get letters of recommendation.

VOLLEYBALL AWARDS BANQUETThe South Hamilton Varsity Volleyball team finished with an overall record of 21-11 and a conference record of 3-4. The Hawks were ranked in many cat-egories in the conference. They were first in the con-ference in Total Blocks, Solo Blocks, and Blocks per Set; they were second in Block Assists, third in Kill Efficiency, Aces, and Aces per Set; and fourth in Serve Efficiency. CROSS COUNTRY AWARDS BANQUET

A large gathering of over 100 parents and athletes attended the 2017 Cross Country Year End Banquet on November 5th, in the elementary cafeteria. The event signaled the end of the High School Cross Country careers of 3 seniors. An old-fashioned potluck meal, speeches, handing out of All-Conference Awards, and presentation of State Qualifier certificates to the Boys’ team made the evening a lot of fun.

The season ending awards were given to the following athletes: #1 Boy Runner – Logan Peters; #2 Boy Runner – Josiah Brown; #3 Boy Runner – Quinton Grove; #1 Girl Runner – Yolanda Licea;

#2 Girl Runner – Marissa Jensen; #3 Girl Runner – Abby Ervin.

The coaching staff would like to extend a big THANK YOU to all those persons who did anything to make this year’s cross country experience a memorable one for the 7-12 athletes.

The Stephen Gray chapter of the National Honor Society inducted fifteen new members on Sunday, November 19th at 4:00 p.m. with a ceremony held in the Atrium. Current members Anna Ervin, Marla Grubb, Shea Hassebrock, Madison Klocke, Taylor Ratzke, Gabrielle Struchen, and Jared Ullestad lead the ceremony. New members Karlie Busch, Breanne Diersen, Brayden Evans, Sydney Friest, Conner Hill, Leah Jacoby, Samuel Lewis, Anna Moss, Maya Penning, Bridg-it Schlafke, Alexandria Schwerin, Lily Skartvedt, Katelyn Sogard, Anna Utrera-Greenfield, and Emily Willadsen were inducted.

As part of the application process, students complet-ed an essay answering the question: Why is leader-ship or service important to my school, community, or world? These essays were shared during the ceremony followed by reciting the pledge to be-come members.

The guest speaker was Billie Shelton, a 1968 graduate of South Hamilton, who has pursued a freelance writing career from her family farm near Stanhope for 35 years. She is a local celebrity well known for her weekly column, “Extraor-dinary Hearts” which documents unsung heroes in our community. Her speech outlined the pillars of the National Honor Society- Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service in conjunction with her experiences as a resident of our district and writer. A reception with cupcakes and punch followed the ceremony.

BASKETBALL SEATING

The varsity boys’ and girls’ basketball season is here! We are all excited to attend the games and cheer the Hawks on to a lot of victories. The section for the K-6 grade students is the northwest corner of the gym on the balcony level. Students will not be required to sit in this section during home wrestling meets.

TEACHER WEBSITES Teachers in the elementary are posting daily assignments and homework for their classes on their teacher websites. Parents can access the site to find out what assignments their children have by following these steps:

THE LORD’S CUPBOARD

The Lord’s Cupboard is the South Hamilton area emergency food pantry. During the month of De-cember the students and staff at the elementary col-lect items for the Lord’s Cupboard. They rely solely on donations from citizens and businesses. They are in need of all types of non-perishable foods and per-sonal care items.

WINTER WEARSoon, snow will be covering our playground at the elementary. As a rule, all students are required to wear boots outside for recess after the first snow. It is also important for students to have something to wear on their heads and hands. These items all help make recess more enjoyable for the students.

BOOK FAIRWe would like to extend a big THANK YOU to all the students, parents, and community members who helped make the fall elementary school Scholastic Book Fair a success. Through your generous purchases, we were able to select many new books for the library. We hope you enjoy the new books in your home libraries as much as the students enjoy the new books in the elementary library. WINTER RECESSA reminder that students in the elementary must have a physician’s note to stay in from recess any-time due to health concerns. HISTORY ON THE MOVE, HISTORY 101, a mobile museum from the State Historical Museum of Iowa, was on site at South Hamilton Elementary School from November 13-17. Students in Grades Pre-K-2 learned about Railroad Hero Kate Shelley and students Grades 3-6 and 11 learned about Iowa basics and Iowans at home, work, and play.

If your student is interested in learning more about Iowa history, the State Historical Society of Iowa has a new program called Goldie’s Kids Club that they may love! Children ages 12 and un-der are invited to join FREE! Membership includes:

• A newsletter full of fun facts and games• Exclusive invitations to museum activities• A birthday card from Goldie• Other goodies throughout the year

If you are looking for a family friendly road trip destination, check out the State Historical Museum of Iowa in Des Moines! Visitors will discover Iowa’s rich heritage through a variety of exhibitions, including Iowa and the Great War, Iowa and the Civil War, Holly-wood in the Heartland and Riding Through History. Young visitors will love the Hands-On History gallery, where they can play with Duplo blocks, create crayon rubbings of Iowa symbols and climb atop an Oliver Super 77 tractor!

The State Historical Museum of Iowa is FREE, is located at 600 East Locust Street and is open Monday-Saturday 9:00AM-4:30PM. FREE parking is available in the Capitol Complex Parking Garage at the corner of Grand and Pennsylvania Avenues.

The Giant Traveling Map of Iowa also visited South Hamilton from November 13-22. Students were actively involved learning about Iowa. They were able to apply and learn geography and map skills by standing on the map, locating various towns and landmarks, tracing rivers, interstates, and major highways, identifying products produced in Iowa and where they originated, and visualizing, counting and analyzing how much production of select crops and livestock occurs in Iowa. These were a few of the many hands on activities students participated in while the Giant Traveling Map of Iowa


South Hamilton Community Schools Severe Weather Procedures

Snow, ice, and cold temperatures are right around the corner – we do live n Iowa - which could potentially alter school schedules with delayed start times, early dismissals, or school closings.

Many factors are taken into consideration when a change in the school schedule may need to take place, but our first priority will always be the safety of our students and staff. Transportation Director Gene Greenfield and I will check road conditions beginning as early as 5:00 a.m. Multiple sources – Iowa/Hamilton County D.O.T. connections, other area school district leaders, and sophisticated forecasting/radar technology - will be used to determine if weather conditions are or will be safe enough to hold school. Weather conditions can vary and/or change quickly throughout our 200+ square mile district, so please keep this in mind.

Any decision to change the school schedule due to inclement weather will be made as early as possible. When it is necessary to cancel school or delay the start of the school day, media outlets will be directly contacted. Once a decision has been made to delay, dismiss early or cancel school, the following radio and television stations will be contacted:

Radio: WHO (1040 AM), TV: WHO (Channel 13), KJYL (100.7 FM), KCCI (Channel 8) KQWC (1570 AM, 95.7 FM) WOI (Channel 5)

When school is delayed, it is important for one to continue listening/watching the above media sources for any further updates. Announcements will also be posted on the school website: www.s-hamilton.k12.ia.us and sent out via Infinite Campus. Parents: If you have not yet registered for your parent portal account, please do so before winter weather settles in. This is important, as the school district will utilize the Messenger feature to send out text messages and emails regarding weather announcements. If you have any questions about your parent portal account, please contact the school.

Parents are encouraged to review any plans they have established with their children as to where their child is to go in the event of an early school dismissal. Please make sure your child and anyone providing after-school childcare services are aware of these plans. In addition, please make sure your child’s school has your current emergency contact information.

Severe weather may affect school bus service. Hazardous road conditions or temporarily closed roads may make it difficult, if not impossible, for the buses to pick-up and/or drop-off students at their regular bus stops so parents/guardians may be asked to meet buses at designated pick-up points. Routes and assignments will be handed out to bus riders as needed. If you have any questions about your alternate route assignment, please call the bus barn at 515-827-5658. The same notification process noted above will be used if it is necessary to use alternate bus routes.

A school patron once asked me, “How do you decide if school should be held on questionable weather days?” My reply was, “If I would not be comfortable with my own 16 or 17 year old son or daughter driving to school…then I do not care to have someone else’s child make that same drive…because I know there will be a 16 or 17 year old student that will have to drive if classes are held.”

Staff Member of the Month- 153 students completed a nomination for any staff member in our district and building that they feel deserves recognition. There was a tie with Mr. Brodie and Mrs. Voga receiving the most nominations. They also received a certifi-cate with reasons for nominations and a piece of ice cream cake.

Thank you to Dairy Queen in Webster City for donating an ice cream cake each month for our students to enjoy.

A DECADE OF DODGEBALL!!

Calling all South Hamilton community members! The 10th Annual South Hamilton Dodgeball Tour-nament is coming up on Saturday, December 9th beginning at 4:30 PM! Team registration is now OPEN, and we'd love for you to compete and cele-brate a "Decade of Dodgeball" with us! Entry forms must be turned in with the entry fee to the office by Thursday, December 7!

There will be an All-You-Can-Eat Spaghetti Din-ner at the tournament (sponsored by Barilla Pasta), which is $6/Adults and $4/Students. A delicious as-sortment of festive baked goods will be available for sale that evening, as well! Don't miss out on what is sure to be an OUTSTANDING evening full of fun!

We are also selling once-in-a-lifetime, commemora-tive t-shirts for the 10th Anniversary of the Dodge-ball Tournament! Shirts are available in short sleeve ($12) and long sleeve ($15), and all orders must be submitted to the high school office by noon on Thursday, November 30!
