The shows this year have generally been well supported, and the standard of exhibits has been high – all good news for breed promotion. Those members who take the time and who go to considerable expense to show their cattle should be thanked by us all – they are providing the ‘shop-window’ display that does so much to sell the breed. I wish good luck for a favourable result and an enjoyable time to those who are taking part in the many one-day shows around the country. At long last we see a chink of light in the TB catastrophe affecting so many herds and their keepers. The decision to pilot two areas for the culling of badgers is much welcomed, and hopefully it will lead to licences being issued in more areas. However it will need the support and commitment of many farmers if it is to become a successful means to help towards the long-term control of bovine TB. Bill Harper and the TB Eradication Group have worked tirelessly to get to this point and they are to be congratulated for their steadfastness in advising government that the wildlife issue must be addressed as part of an overall package of control. However, there is still much work to do, and there will be other hurdles to jump. There has been a good response to Dovecote Park/Waitrose from the South-West, and we look forward to seeing our beef on the Waitrose fresh counter in Devon and Cornwall. There are opportunities for others with Morrisons supermakets – please see more information inside - with a premium payable for native breeds. As always, August is when the office is short-staffed due to holidays but, if you have work that needs urgent attention please let us know and we will do our best to get it done quickly. With my best wishes Caroline

THE NATIONAL SHOW 2011

Royal Norfolk Show

The second National Show of South Devons was a resounding success for all involved – may I extend my thanks and congratulations to all those who took part or helped in any way. Staff and officials at the Royal Norfolk Show were all warmly welcoming and were obviously pleased to play host to this special event. What a turn-out of cattle: large classes of quality cattle which drew the attention of spectators and like-minded breeders! I have heard many favourable comments from people outside the Society, so the publicity was well worth it. In the end there were 91 South Devons forward – from six of our seven regions - which together with calves at foot, totalled 107 representatives of the breed. Very well done to all those who made such an enormous effort to be there. Our judge, Hugh Lello, did an excellent job of sorting out the order – by no means an easy task. A CD of photos will be available in due course and copies will be sent to exhibitors, and anyone else who would like to request one. Aside the cattle judging, the Show included a number of highlights, especially the Towergate Lloyd & Whyte Young Handler Competition; the visit by HRH Princess Anne; and the lavish Pimms Party held in our ring-side marquee. I have already personally thanked those who played a big role in the proceedings – but if I have left someone out, THANK YOU! We could not have put on such a good show without the help of our sponsors – namely KW Trident; Merial Igenity; Heygate & Sons Ltd; Randall Parker Foods Ltd; Ray Wilson & Co; Central Wool Growers; Dallas Keith Ltd; Cotswold Seeds Ltd; Mr M Kettlewell; Mr J Pinnells; and Lord Jim Prior. We are most grateful to them all for their generosity.

TOWERGATE LLOYD & WHYTE YOUNG HANDLER COMPETITION

Judge: Mr Hugh Lello MBE, Ashill Farm, Kehelland, Camborne, Cornwall

Since the Society decided to link the Young Handler Competition to the annual National Show, it has given the opportunity for members in other parts of the country to become involved as and when the Show reaches their locality. This year, eight skilled young South Devon enthusiasts competed for the winning prize of £400 towards an overseas trip with a South Devon focus, most of whom had not entered the competition in previous years. The standard was, once again, very high, and all did well in each section of the Competition. Congratulations to all who took part, but especially the winners, namely: 1st Ryan Coates, Newton Harcourt, Leicester 2nd Edward Salmon, Ranworth, Norwich 3rd Oliver Brewin, Thorpe Langton, Market Harborough The runners-up were Thomas Blunt, Joe Emmett, George Hartley-Webb, Jessica Phipps-Carter, and Henry Tyrrell.

MEMBER’S CYCLING CHALLENGE Robin Weston, aged 70 this August

Robin and Sandra Weston moved to France over ten years ago, having sold their Rathgrange herd of South Devons. They have remained keen enthusiasts for the breed, and are very supportive of the Society and its members. Having taken on the challenge five years ago of following the Tour de France cycling route – some 2,261 miles – Robin has decided to have another go this year to raise money for three cancer charities on a shorter route – just 2,170 miles! (This puts our Race for Life efforts into another context altogether …) Society members are invited to make donations either directly on Robin’s website, www.charitytours.org, or by cheque to Charity Tours, c/o Robin & Sandra Weston, Le Bois de Guinot, 24620 Marquay, France, if they would like to help this brave effort!

AND FINALLY …

A man sitting in the corner of a railway carriage kept tearing bits out of his newspaper, screwing them into small balls and then throwing them out of the window. The man sitting opposite asked him why he was doing it. “To keep the elephants away.” “But there aren’t any elephants,” said the other passenger. “I know. It’s very effective, isn’t it?”
