2016 SCO District Scholarship to MVNUDescription
This scholarship is awarded by the South Central Ohio NYI Executive Council on a merit basis. The scholarship is typically awarded to one student in the amount of up to $2,500 for one year. The South Central Ohio NYI Executive Council reserves the right to grant multiple scholarships for lesser amounts, instead of giving out just one scholarship. If a student is awarded a scholarship, he or she will be notified by mail. A check will be sent directly to MVNU no later than August 10th.
RequirementsThe requirements are that the student must have a Christian testimony, must be entering the freshman year at Mount Vernon Nazarene University, and is entering into a youth ministry major.
Who Should ApplyThe South Central Ohio NYI Executive Council selects candidates based on Christian testimony, academics, local church involvement, district involvement, and references. The council reserves the right to pick the applicant who best reflects the ideal of excellence in faith, service, leadership, and academics.
How to ApplyPlease complete an application (available from your youth pastor or Dave Gray) and have two references filled out. All forms need to be sent to the South Central Ohio NYI President. References should be mailed, faxed, or emailed separately. The forms need to be postmarked no later than June 30th, 2016. Mail to:

2016 SCO NYI District Winter Retreat ReportBy Dave Gray
Heartland Retreat and Conference Center once again hosted our annual District Winter Retreat in January. This year’s theme was INVEST primarily coming from a sermon that was heard at last summer’s NYC in Louisville by a speaker named Eric Samuel Timm. I met with a few leaders and said it would be great to get Mr. Timm as the speaker at retreat this year and we all agreed that it would be a lofty goal. I sent an email anyway and thank The Lord Eric Samuel Timm responded that it was the only week-end he had free for like a year and a half. We were blessed to have him speak! We were also blessed to have Zack Zaborski and his band lead us in worship for the event. They did a tremendous job in preparing us for the messages in each session.
We had over 540 teens and adults register for the event. So many that we had to close out registration about a week before the event. On the first night there were over 35 teens who stood to their feet for the first time to make a decision to follow Jesus! We had a lip-sync contest that was out of this world and did many other fun things.
I want to thank Randy Nelson, Carrie Spiaggi, and Eric Clark for helping plan, administer and run the greatest Winter Retreat we’ve ever had!! I also want to thank all the youth leaders and students on SCO for being amazing at what you do and who you are. We look forward to next year to meet together to retreat....to see God move in our lives.

District NYI President Report - 2016Pastor Trevor and SCO District Congregations. It is an honor to
address you this afternoon about the past year of youth ministry on the district. There were many exciting events and happenings on our District NYI. Successful events that helped build The Kingdom of Christ. Events that helped make disciples.
To name a few: Influence 2015 was the first time that we’ve held summer camp at our district campgrounds in Logan. The goal was to offer more than a summer camp, to add a missional aspect to the event. Josh Porterfield did an incredible job of coordinating the event. We had over 100 students and adults who took part from Sunday to Friday. We were challenged to become people of influence in our culture. People like Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abendnego who stood against the trends of culture and brought God attention. We served people and organizations in Logan, Lancaster, and Nelsonville. I’m excited to see what Influence 2016 holds.
NYC2015 was simply amazing. Once again we had over 100 students and adults attend this every 4 year event in Louisville, KY. It was great to be a part of something huge that made an even bigger difference. There were over 237 work sites throughout Louisville. Over 8,000 clean water filters were built by students and 66,096 healthy meals were packed for mission use in South Sudan. The messages and the worship at NYC were life changing. Mark Russell and David Morrison put in many long hard hours preparing and running our district’s aspect of NYC. We were so blessed to have them as coordinators.

All of our events have the same goal: Reaching teenagers and showing them the love of Jesus and making them disciples of Him. District Blast, led by Eric Clark and Brad Crumbacher, has done this through allowing teens to share the talents and gifts He has given them. Teen Bible Quizzing, led by Joe Buxie, challenges students to study God’s word and to put it into practice in their lives.

I’m very excited about the youth ministries and leaders we have on our district. I’m reminded of 1 Chronicles chapter 12:32 when it talks about the tribe of Issachar. It says these were “men who understood the times and knew what Israel needed to do”. It is great being surrounded by youth leaders who understand the deep need in our students and families to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. We’ve added Jason States, Ben Wong, Bailey Weghorst, and Kauri Ledford to our family of youth pastors this year and I’m so excited to work beside them.
As your NYI President, we will strive this year to make it a year of sharing, sharing resources, sharing ideas, and sharing our ministries. My hope is that this year will be a year where our District NYI will be strengthened by being a group that is unified more than ever. When unity happens the world begins to see that Jesus is real.
Finally, I want to thank Pastor Trevor, who gives me encouragement and wisdom on a weekly basis; Betty Neighborgall, who is a sweet lady and leader, it’s been an honor to serve alongside of her these past few years. Thanks to all of the SCO NYI Council, it is great working with you. I appreciate Heritage Nazarene Church and Pastor Wendell Brown who give me the opportunity to work in the district and to continue to work here with students and families.
Most of all I want to thank Jesus Christ. Big Daddy Weave sings a song called “Overwhelmed” with a verse that says, “I delight myself in You, captivated by Your Beauty....I’m overwhelmed, I’m overwhelmed by You.”

Teen Bible Quizzing 2015-2016The district quiz year completed with the finals hosted by Hilliard on
March 5th. Our top two teams are Westerville and Cypress Gamma. These two teams will be representing our district at the MVNU regional quiz on May 5-7 in the church team portion of the competition.

In addition to preparing for the MVNU Regional finals in May, district teen quizzers are also preparing for Q2016. Every other year the Nazarene national finals quiz is hosted at a Q event, open to local and district teen quizzers in addition to the regional teams competing to be national champions. This year’s Q event is being hosted at Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, Oklahoma. Participants from SCO will leave June 23rd, compete June 27-July 2, and return July 4th. Please pray for our teens as they travel and compete.
