C overing approximately 900 square kilometres South Cambridgeshire is Cambridgeshire’s second largest district. It completely surrounds Cambridge City and shares boundaries with Huntingdonshire, Fenland and East Cambridgeshire to the north and the counties of Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Essex and Suffolk to the south. South Cambridgeshire has played a key part in the economic growth of the region. It has successfully combined traditional industries such as agriculture and engineering with new sectors such as ICT and life sciences, many of which are situated on one of the several burgeoning business and science parks. South Cambridgeshire is justifiably proud of having played a prominent role in fostering the Cambridge Phenomenon – the internationally renowned Cambridge Science Park lies within the district – whilst other parks, such as The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute on the Genome Campus, have established reputations for excellence in their research areas. Other notable sites include Granta Park, the Babraham Bio-incubator and Melbourn Science Park, each presenting a unique offer in their approach to business support and catering for spin-outs, start-ups, SME’s and established international corporates. In fact many of the innovative companies and science parks for which Cambridge is famous actually lie within South Cambridgeshire due to the availability of space and reduced overheads whilst still being able to maintain close proximity to the world famous University of Cambridge, Anglia Ruskin University and other leading research institutes. The district lies within the London-Stansted- Cambridge-Peterborough (LSCP) Growth Area which runs from North London to the city of Peterborough. The LSCP Growth Area is a part of the national growth agenda with provisions and plans in place to allow for, and support, a population growth of 33% by 2016 from a population of 131,000 in 2001. As well as an expanding settled population South Cambridgeshire is a desirable destination for a highly skilled scientific and technology orientated talent base due to the availability of career opportunities and the concentration of innovative and ground breaking companies. Quality of LifeSouth Cambridgeshire is consistently cited as being a great place to live and has once again been ranked in the top ten places to live by Channel 4’s Location, Location, Location. The programme stated that it is a quiet place to live, with exceptionally low crime figures and an impressive concern for the environment. The positive comments go on to mention the good travel links to London and Stansted Airport and the fact that there is plenty to see and do in the district, such as the Imperial War Museum at Duxford and Wimpole Hall, as well as in neighbouring Cambridge City.
