Executive summary
Welcome to the Deloitte South Australian Stock Exchange Quarterly Index (Deloitte SA Index) for 30 September 2016.
The Deloitte SA Index is a quarterly review of South Australian stocks. It is compiled from publicly available information provided by the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX). The Deloitte SA Index is based on the market capitalisation weighted share price performance of South Australian listed companies. The impact of dividends and capital returns are excluded from the Index, which currently comprises 65 companies.
The Deloitte SA Index has increased by 21.1% over the last 12 months, a significant outperformance of the S&P/ASX 200, which increased by 8.3% over the same period.
The Deloitte SA Index increased by 6.0% in the 2016 September quarter, while the S&P/ASX 200 recorded a 3.9% increase. Both indices displayed a strong increase in July but recorded moderate falls in August, whilst September remained relatively flat. The absolute total market capitalisation of the state’s 65 listed companies increased by $662 million (2.67%) during the September quarter, from $24.79 billion to $25.45 billion.
In February this year, global supply pressures and strengthening demand spurred upward trends in commodity prices. As a result, many Deloitte SA Index Energy & Resource (E&R) companies experienced positive share price growth over the September quarter, with E&R companies accounting for eight of the top ten performers (by share price) in the Deloitte SA Index.

South Australian E&R companies have seized the opportunity presented by strengthened share prices to source capital through equity raisings. These capital raisings have been utilised to fund acquisitions and replenish cash positions that were previously under pressure.
Most notably, Cooper Energy Limited has performed multiple capital raisings this year ahead of the acquisition of a portfolio of gas assets off the coast of Victoria from Santos. This transformational transaction, which is aligned to its stated strategy, contributed to a 70% increase in share price over the September quarter.
Similarly, Sundance Energy Australia Limited raised capital through equity offerings in June and August of this year, ahead of the acquisition of Eagle Ford’s assets in Texas, USA.
We anticipate that the strong share prices and capital injections in South Australia’s E&R industry will continue to spur increased investment activity by South Australian E&R companies in the short to mid-term.

Positive contributions to the Deloitte SA IndexOver the last quarter, 34 of the 65 South Australian listed companies positively contributed to the Deloitte SA Index. The top three contributors to the Index during this quarter, which have remained the same as the June quarter, were Mayne Pharma Group Limited, Adelaide Brighton Limited and OZ Minerals Limited.
Mayne Pharma Group Limited (Mayne Pharma) was the largest positive contributor (5.0%) to the Deloitte SA Index over the quarter. Mayne Pharma is a pharmaceutical company specialising in drug delivery expertise with capabilities in research and development as well as manufacturing. Mayne Pharma continues to enjoy growth following significant acquisitions in the 12 months to September.
Adelaide Brighton Limited (Adelaide Brighton) was the second largest positive contributor (2.1%) to the Deloitte SA Index over the quarter. Adelaide Brighton is an
importer, distributor, and marketer of cement and concrete products. Adelaide Brighton’s increase in share price is being driven not only by the increase in infrastructure in South Australia but also by growing demand from the east coast of Australia. It is expected that Adelaide Brighton will continue to grow through signalled acquisition intentions.
OZ Minerals Limited (OZ Minerals) was the third largest positive contributor (1.0%) to the Deloitte SA Index over the quarter. OZ Minerals owns and operates the Prominent Hill copper-gold mine and the Carrpateena copper-gold mine in South Australia. Despite decreased capacity over the September quarter as a result of the state-wide blackout in late September, OZ Minerals’ overall production exceeded expectations during the September quarter. In conjunction with lower than expected costs OZ Minerals has enjoyed another successful quarter following the decision to move its head office to South Australia. Compilation of the Deloitte SA IndexCompilation of the Deloitte SA Index The quarterly Deloitte SA Index is compiled from publicly available information provided by the ASX on the share prices and market capitalisation of each South Australian listed company.
A company is included on the Deloitte SA Index if its registered office is in South Australia. Dual-listed companies are not included in the Deloitte SA Index. The information on South Australian listed companies is extracted to provide a market capitalisation weighted share price index for all South Australian companies broadly in line with the methodology adopted for the compilation of the S&P/ASX 200 Index. The impact of dividends and capital returns has been excluded from the Deloitte SA Index.
The base period of the Deloitte SA Index is 30 June 2005, and for the purposes of the Index this month is given a notional value of one. Please note, if a company has been delisted during a particular period, no data will be included for that month and all subsequent months until the company is relisted. Historical information regarding the company will continue to be included in the calculation of the Deloitte SA Index.
