Idyllic islands of the Indian Ocean

Elephant Park, which consists of over51,000 hectacres of bush country and ishome to over 450 elephants. Although itbelongs to the same species as the AfricanElephant, the reddish Addo Elephant issmaller with more rounded ears, while thefemales generally have no tusks. On a gamedrive through the park by coach, you willhopefully be able to encounter this rare animal, as well as a variety of other game,which was recently introduced to the reserve. This includes lion, hyena, cheetah,zebra, eland, kudu, red hartebeest and wild dogs.

Day 8 Richards BayThe town of Richards Bay lies at the seaedge of an ancient floodplain, almosthalfway between Durban and Kosi Bay and it acts as a gateway to Zululand andMaputaland. Here, we enjoy an includeddrive to Hluhluwe Game Reserve. Proclaimed a game reserve in 1895, Hluhluwe has since become well known forits small population of the rare white rhino.

Day 4 Cape TownA free day in Cape Town with time to dosome shopping or perhaps head out oftown. There’s a choice of full day optionalsavailable – the Cape Peninsula tour or theCape Winelands tour. The Cape Winelandsregion is the source of many legendaryCape wines, the produce of row-upon-rowof grapevines, many of which were firstplanted hundreds of years ago. You’ll visitthe towns of Paarl and Stellenbosch andenjoy tastings and cellar tours at two well-known wine estates. Then drive toSan Soucis Mountain and the MissionLodge, where liberated slave children were once educated.

spend a day. Or opt for a Coral Cruise to the reef barrier and view the underwaterworld from a glass-bottomed boat – youcan also enjoy some hand fish feeding and snorkelling.

Day 25 Colombo Transfer to Colombo Airport for flighthome.

Peter Mawby ornithologist and research ecologist, has travelled widelyand is a regular and successful lecturer. Whilst at school he was

part of one of the first expeditions to visit South-East Iceland to study the breeding distribution ofthe Great Skua and subsequently organised hisown expeditions to the Shetland and Faeroe Islands as an undergraduate at Cambridge University. Such was his skill and expertise that he received his licence and has been ringing birds for well over fifty years. He is now in greatdemand to speak to enthusiasts from the RSPB.When not lecturing Peter welcomes the opportunity to enhance passengers’ experiences of the wildlife around them out on deck, with on-board commentaries and on tour from the ship.

Lecture topicsA LETTER TO MR DARWIN – Alfred Wallace described himself as “a young man in a hurry”. By comparison, Charles Darwin was a reluctant advocate of evolution by natural selection. It was aletter from Wallace, written from S.E. Asia whichfinally forced Darwin’s hand.

ISLAND WILDLIFE – From Madagascar to theMaldives – The volcanic islands of the Indian Ocean,geologically relatively young, tend to have fewer endemic species than islands, such as Madagascar,which separated from ancient continents millions ofyears ago. Both have numerous species “at risk”.

Simone Schofield specialises in teaching patchwork and quilting to allages. She was born in Cape Town in1955 and co-owns a patchwork shop

called STITCH 'N STUFF in a suburb of CapeTown. Simone has also branched out into embroidery, bead making and quick, fun thingsto sew which give the maker instant pleasure. Her patchwork classes now include beginners,intermediate and advanced students and thetechniques will satisfy the traditional and innovative quilter.

Lecture topicsCRAFT CLASSES – Simone makes the classes revolvearound the area past which the ship is sailing ie. African embroidery, African Mama doll, African beadwork and many others. She prepares a variety of kits forthe cruising students and supplies everything needed tofinish the article.

Dr Richard Thomas has had a career inInternational Development working asan academic, a consultant and as a long term staff member of the UK’s

Department for International Development. He has worked in all of Anglophone Africa, and much of North Africa, Eastern Europe, theMiddle East and South and South East Asia. Hewas, in the late 1980s, responsible for a series ofprogrammes in the ASEAN region which involvedextensive travel to Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesiaand Thailand. He subsequently ran training programmes in Singapore, Malacca, Kuching and Port Klang.

Lecture topicsCEYLON/SRI LANKA: Paradise delayed – Thiscountry has a long history but it has been shaped by450 years of Colonial Rule (by the Portuguese, theDutch and the British). The British imported a million Tamils from India who worked largely on thetea plantations –and unbalanced the demography ofthe country. Although the Civil War has ended (in2009) tensions remain.

THE CUP THAT CHEERS: The importance of theTea Trade to the expansion of the British Empire.– A history of the development of tea production(from China Tea to Tea Bags) and of the Tea Trade(Clipper Races) from Asia to Europe. Will Tea remain the drink of choice in the West?

Andrew Schofield is an ecologist whowas born in Farnborough England1956. He has lived in Nigeria, Kenyaand Tanzania and now lives in Cape

Town, South Africa. Conservation has been thetheme of his life with influences by many people,starting with his Godfather who was the NationalParks field officer for Nigeria and who took him asa young boy to see the herds of Elephants in thebush to the turtles nesting on the beaches. Andrewhas created wildlife reserves in areas that have nothad game on them for hundreds of years. He hascollected and translocated species like Elephant,Rhino, Cheetah and Lion and successfully habituated them to the new reserves and was thefirst person in the world to release White Lionsback into the wild.

Lecture topicsTHE SAVANNAHS OF AFRICA – This is a two parttalk which takes us on a journey across the Savannahfrom East to West. In the talk, we discuss the relationshipbetween the ants and elephants and how each animaland insect has a direct influence on the survival and well-being of themselves and their environment.

WHITE LION – This talk is about how the genes of theWhite Lion were returned to the wild. White Lions havebeen removed from the wild since the 1920s because itwas thought that they could not survive. We discuss howthe team did the re-introduction, in such a way that ithas now given us the opportunity of seeing the WhiteLion in the wild again.
