A Peek into S.O.S. Safe Ride’s Story

The Safe Ride Foundation Inc. is a nonprofit organization created to combat the very serious problem of

impaired driving in the bustling community of Frederick Maryland. “S.O.S. Safe Ride” or “Safe Ride” for

short is the flagship program of the organization. S.O.S. Safe Ride is a program that provides the

community with the convenience of on-demand designated drivers to transport an intoxicated person’s

vehicle to their home with them inside. This program in turn provides a great alternative to a taxi cab,

giving the person the luxury of having their vehicle in their driveway the next morning, and preventing

them from making a decision that would harm either themselves or others.

Our organization was founded in December of 2015, with our sister organization in West Virginia being

founded in April of 2013. Since The Safe Ride Foundation’s inception in Frederick Maryland, we’ve

already given well over 450 rides to the citizens of Frederick County, a number that we have been

extremely overwhelmed by, as our designated driving program specifically has only been in operation

since April of 2016. The “buzz” that Safe Ride has created in the local media, and the community, has

resulted in an almost overnight success, and from that we know that we have created something that

will serve our community in a big way for years to come.

While our program is accessible to anyone in our area in the event that they would need it, S.O.S. Safe

Ride naturally targets its efforts mainly toward the age group of young or middle aged professionals, as

well as college students, as these groups tend to be the biggest culprits of impaired driving. With this

being said, it’s interesting to note that at the beginning of the program’s operations, it had been

originally created with the intention of aiming towards almost exclusively college students, in order to

combat not only college binge drinking, but also underage drinking. Through this however, we noticed a

noticeable trend, a trend that gave us huge perspective on how our organization’s efforts were doing in

certain demographics. We discovered that in our infancy, the student population generally neglected

the use our program, so much so that less than 12% of those who utilized the program were in that age

group. We were very shocked by this data, and through more research and focus grouping, we

discovered that this was fact inherent of four major underlying reasons listed below.

1.) Students in the area lived close enough to the nightlife scene to simply walk.

2.) Students did not possess their own vehicles

3.) While our program’s rates are extremely low, at just $1 per mile for students specifically, the average “broke college kid” was usually (and naturally) more hesitant about parting with what little cash they

had.

4.) Biggest Reason: Students are young, and for a lack of a better term, understandably reckless, and as a result have the “invincible” complex that we all had at that age. In layman’s terms: “It won’t happen to

me”.

While it wasn’t necessary to do much about the first two reasons, since luckily for us, students in those

two situations wouldn’t need our program as it is...there was certainly something we could do about

reasons 3 and 4…

Increasing Drunk Driving Awareness & Becoming Even More Accessible.

As a result of our new efforts to tackle student drunk driving, our designated driving program can now

be accessed through phone, text, and even our free to download mobile app. Our response times have

now lowered to no more than 10 minutes, meaning a person is never far away from a designated driver.

In addition, due to increasing public support, we now have implemented a new discount, providing any

person with their first ride, FOR ABSOLUTELY NO CHARGE. Needless to say, if what’s keeping you from

being responsible is a monetary reason, than your ride is on us as far as we’re concerned. We’re a

nonprofit organization trying to stop drunk driving, and that means everyone. To further drive this

concept home (no pun intended), we provide single every bar/hotel/private club/winery in our area

with several “Free Ride Gift Cards” every month, to utilize for any person in their establishment who

they feel shouldn’t be driving.

In addition, we have now increased our drunk driving education efforts, most prominently through our

scholarship programs. Every year we provide several scholarships to local college and high school

students who submit a project on the dangers of drunk driving, the winners of this contest have their

projects displayed in their college/high school, and receive a grant from our organization, rewarding

them for their help in educating students about the epidemic of drunk driving.

A Sponsorship With The Safe Ride Foundation Inc.

A tax-deductible donation to the 501(c)3 charity “The Safe Ride Foundation” will go to tremendous

lengths in helping to stop drunk driving the state of Maryland. It is very important for us to note and

clarify, that no part of your contribution will be attributed to salaries or compensation of any kind, be it

our board members, designated drivers, etc. Part of this generous contribution will go towards the

furthering of our designated driving program, be it through helping educate the public on ALL of their

safe options for getting home, even if it isn’t us. It also may further the development of our

organization’s mobile app, or aid in the acquisition of additional volunteers and vehicles, all of which will

help our programs become that much more accessible to the community. At least 30% of any

contribution we receive is also attributed to the betterment of our scholarship programs, our internship

programs for local college students, and even our grant making programs used to further other drunk

driving organizations in our area.

In conclusion, we leave you with a sentence that we’ve said to every media outlet, and to every single

person we’ve ever driven. We mean it every single time, and it will always ring true…

Appendix A: - DUI Statistics For Frederick County, Maryland

Curbing the DUI epidemic in Frederick County has been an uphill battle for police over the course of the

last decade. The graph data above is taken from the Governor’s Highway Safety Administration starting

in January, 2012. It shows an increasing number of DUI’s issued in Frederick County.

Appendix B - Impaired Driving Facts:

The following facts are taken from information provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

U.S. Law Enforcement, specifically in the state of Maryland is working towards a Zero Tolerance policy of alcohol driving

Almost Half of all drivers killed in crashes tested positive for alcohol in

their system

Over 1.2 Million drivers were arrested in 2014 for driving under the influence of alcohol

Males are 8% more likely to drive drunk than Females

The Rate of Drunk Driving is highest amongst 21 to 25 Year olds

Drunk Driving is 6 times more likely at night than it is during the day

DUI Conviction can lead to many detrimental consequences including: $5,000-$10,000 in legal fees, Loss of License, Mandatory AA Meetings, Jail
