Thank you for your interest in sorority recruitment and congratulations on your decision to participate in recruitment here at FAU! Whether you are a new student or an experi-enced Owl, there is a place in our community for you! Joining a sororitycan bring you many opportunities that you may not find otherwise. In addition to mak-ing new and lifelong friends, you will have the opportunity to enhance your leadership skills, improve your academic performance, engage in community service activities, and so much more!In this manual, you will find a lot of great information about sorority recruitment and our community. s National Panhellenic ConferenceThe National Panhellenic Conference was created in 1902 to help form bonds between our sororities and cre-ated set of guidelines regarding recruitment. Today there are 26 fraternal organizations that are affiliated with NPC and exist to assist collegiate and alumnae members groups to foster interfraternal relationships. Members are represented on over 620 campuses in the US and Canada.

When you join ne of the 5 NPC sororities at FAU, you also become a member of the University Panhellenic Council (CPA). CPA is the governing body of 5 National NPC-af-filiated sororities at Florida Atlantic University. CPA is also run by an excecutive board, whose officers are chosen on rotational basis to equally represent women from all 5 sororities chapters at FAU. CPA serves as a forum for discussion of current issues facing college students and the Greek commnity and also promoters equally; therefore, stablishing guidelines that govern member-ship recruitment, social activities, publicity, and member responsibilities.

Sorority chapters at FAU provide a diverse selection of events that will enrich your social life and take you be-yond the daily routine at class, working and studying, formals, date events and chapter retreats. It supports the goal of bringing members together to develop the bonds of friendships.

PHILANTHROPY & THE COMMUNITYOne of the most gratifying aspects of greek life at FAU is giving back to the community through philanthropy, social awareness and community services within the sorority commnity. Chapters plan and sponsor various philanthropy events for national and local commnunity services activities. Helping people in need and doing things for the commnity is an integral part of lifeas a sorority member.

We, the members of the College Panhellenic Association at Florida Atlantic University commit to establish a high set of values that will continue to improve the growth and prosperity of the community. This code was created in order to maintain year-round positive communication, mutual respect, trust, and support among all Panhellenic women. We recognize the Panhellenic experience as a unique opportunity for leadership, scholarship, and friendship. The Code of Ethics provides a guide by which all potential new members, active sorority members, and alumnae of the community shall strive to uphold.

How Does The Process Work?Our recruitment is about a week long, beginning Thursday, September 1st and concluding Sunday, September 11th. You will begin the process by at-tending an orientation to become acclimated to the process and gain more general knowledge about the process. You will then attend three nights of events with the sororities where you will learn more about their organizations. The next night you will attend a preference round event in which you will participate in an open ritual with the organization(s). On the final day, Bid Day, you will be extended a bid to join a sorority and will spend the day with your new sorority family.

The Mutual Selection ProcessThe mutual selection process is the process that is used to place you in a sorority. When you go through recruitment, it is inevitable that you will feel a stronger connection with some organizations than you will with others. The organizations will also feel stronger connections with some potential new mem-bers than they will with others. This is not meant to be mean or cliquey, it is simply meant to ensure that you are in a sorority that you click with, that clicks with you as well. On some nights of recruitment, you will be ranking the sororities based upon which you would most prefer to join. The sororities will also be ranking potential new members based on who they would most like to join their organization. By Bid Day, you will be matched with a sorority where there is a mutual connection. Ultimately, this sorority is the best fit for you.

What is a Recruitment Event?A recruitment event will be a night & day occurrence during the week of recruitment. Each night your recruitment counselor will give you your schedule of events for that night. You will then attend the events. At each event you will have the opportunity to meet some women in each organization. Every round of recruitment the event will be focused on educating you about something different about the sorority.

What is a Recruitment Counselor?Your recruitment counselor is there to serve as your guide throughout the recruitment process. She is an initiated sister in a sorority who will hide her affiliation until Bid Day in order to give you the most unbiased advice possible. She is there to guide you to the sorority that is the best fit for you. Once your recruit-ment counselor contacts you, you will be in contact with each other regularly. She will send you reminders about recruitment and she will promote friendship among the other women in your group. There will be about twenty other potential new members in your recruitment counselor group. Depending on when you register for recruitment, you may have opportuni-ties to get to know your recruitment counselor and the other women in your group before recruitment begins.

s Recruitment ContactBefore recruitment begins, you may be contacted by sorority women. The soror-ity women will be in the FAU breezeway frequently promoting their organizations and you may have classes with them. It is encouraged that you talk to them and get to know them. However, there are some things that should not occur when you are in contact with sorority women. They cannot promise you a bid. For example, if you get to know a woman in a sorority and she says something like, “Well, I like you so my sisters are going to. You’ll definitely join our sorority!” or “When you join my sorority I want you to be my little!”, these things are not al-lowed. These ultimately put you, the potential new member, at a disadvantage because you don’t truly get to view all the organizations with an open mind. Please contact Spring Rosado at the OFFICE OF FRATERNITY & SORORITY LIFE (561) 297-1245 if these things happen to you. For general recruitment questions, contact your recruitment counselor. If you need to reach someone for general questions, emergencies, contact Nicole Beauchamp or Sofia Gonzalez.

Anti-Hazing PolicyHazing, in any form, is absolutely not allowed at Florida Atlantic University. Hazing is defined as any action or situation, with or without consent, which recklessly, intentionally or unintentionally, endangers the mental or physical health or safety of a student, or creates risk of injury, or causes discomfort, embarrassment, harass-ment, or ridicule, or which willfully destroys or removes public or private property for the purpose of initiation or admission into or affiliation with or as a condition for continued membership in a chapter or colony of an NPC member fraternity. Hazing is a felony in the state of Florida. Wanting to be hazed is not a defense, this would actually make you guilty of hazing as well. Hazing is against the FAU Student Code of Conduct and is taken extremely seriously. If you ever feel that you are being hazed, or see hazing occur, contact our The Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life immediately.

RUMORSRumors can be an unfor-tunate occurrence during sorority recruitment. It is not looked upon highly for a PNM to start/spread rumors about women or organizations. Soror-ity women should not to spread rumors to PNMs during recruitment week. If a woman tells you a rumor during an event, please let your recruit-ment counselor know immediately.

Mandatory Acceptance PolicyIf you are part of the recruitment process on preference night and you maximize your options (meaning you agree to ac-cept a bid from any organization whose preference round you attended) you are guaranteed to receive a bid.

Signing & Accepting a BidAfter you attend your preference round(s), you will be offered a Membership Recruitment Acceptance Binding Agreement (MRABA) to sign. The MRABA is a one year binding agreement signed by a potential new member. By signing the MRABA, you are agreeing to accept a bid from any sorority you list on the MRABA. Once this is signed, you cannot participate in sorority recruitment with an organization who is not the organization who offers you a bid for one year.

The right to be treated as an individual.

The right to be fully informed about the recruit-ment process.

The right to ask questions and receive true and objective answers from recruitment counselors

and members.

The right to be treated with respect.

The right to be treated as a capable and mature person without being patronized.

The right to ask how and why and receive straight answers.

The right to have and express opinions to recruit-ment counselors and recruitment staff.

The right to have inviolable confidentiality when sharing information with recruitment counselors

and recruitment staff.

The right to make informed decisions without pressure from others.

The right to be fully informed about the binding agreement implicit in the signing of the MRABA.

The right to make ones own choices and deci-sions and to accept full responsibility for the

results of that decision.

The right to have a positive, safe, and enriching recruitment experience.

A women is eligible to participate in membership for recruitment if...

She is a regularly matriculated student on cam-pus.

Shall not be, or have even been, an initiated member of an NPC group and join another NPC

group.

She shall register for membership recruitment and pay a $30.00 registration fee.

She shall attend orientation and all parties which she has accepted invitations. In the event of an illness or emergency, she should notify the re-

cruitment staff and/or her recruitment counselor if she cannot attend.

She should provide her own transportation.

She should contact her recruitment counselor if she desires to withdrawal from the process.

She shall not give a promise, either verbal or written to join a certain fraternity before bids are

issued through Panhellenic.

She will complete the MRABA after her last event she attends. It is a binding contract and once

this has been signed, no changes may be made

WHEN CHOOSING A Sorority, THERE ARE SOME IMPORTANT THINGS TO THINK ABOUT. JOINING A SORORITY IS NOT MERELY A COMMITMENT FOR YOUR COLLEGE YEARS, BUT A LIFELONG COMMITMENT. SOME THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND AND CONSIDER ARE:Comfort Do you feel comfortable with the women in the sorority? These are women you will be spending lots of time with, so you want to be comfortable with them. You should be able to imagine yourself hanging out with at least a few members outside of sorority activities.

FriendsAvoid choosing a sorority just because your friend likes it. If you and your friends all end up in different sororities, you will remain friends. In our sorority community, we make it a point to have friends in other organizations. You and your friend may have a lot in common, but the decision ultimately must be for you in order for you to be happy with it.

Common GoalsYou’ll be spending a lot of time with your sorority sisters and it’s important to carefully consider whether the organization cor-relates with your lifestyle, social preferences, academic goals, and values.

Shared ValuesWhen choosing a sorority make sure you think about what their values are and if these match yours. This will help you connect with the sorority and feel that you have made the right choice.

What to Bring?During some nights of recruitment you will have free time when you are wait-ing between events. Since recruitment takes place during the semester, many women bring homework with them. While you are in an event, you will not be permitted to bring anything with you. This being said, we advise you to pack light.

If you bring a purse, cell phone, etc. they will be safely guarded by your recruitment counselor and the recruit-ment staff. Ultimately we are NOT responsible for any stoles/lost items.

You can bring a good book or maga-zine to read during your break between events. Your recruitment counselor will also have activities prepared for you as well.

Phones and any electronic items are strongly suggested to be kept at home. You will not be allowed to have those on you at any times.


Questions You Should Ask!Anything! If ever you don’t understand something, are feeling stressed, are confused, aren’t sure about an outfit, etc. your recruitment counselor is there to help! Asking questions can be helpful to gain more knowledge about an organiza-tion and to show interest. Some questions to ask include:

WHAT DO YOU VALUE ABOUT YOUR SORORITY?WHAT OPPORTUNITIES ARE THERE FOR NEW MEMBERS TO SERVE IN LEADERSHIP POSITIONS?WHAT DOES YOUR NEW MEMBER PROGRAM LOOK LIKE?WHAT KIND OF SISTERHOOD EVENTS DO YOU HAVE?ARE DUES ALL-INCLUSIVE?WHAT IS EXPECTED OF ME ACADEMICALLY?WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR IN A MEMBER?WHY DID YOU JOIN YOUR SORORITY?HOW HAS YOUR MEMBERSHIP IMPACTED YOUR COLLEGE EXPERIENCE?

Financial ResponsibiltyIt is important for students and parents to be as imformal as possible regarding to costs associated with obtaining a college education. Understanding the financial obligations associated with sorority mem-bership is just important.

During Formal Recruitment you should ask sosority members about financial obliga-tions and payment options.

How To Choose The Best Sorority For You > Choose a sorority in which you can see yourself hanging out with

members in your free time, not just at sorority events > Ignore gossip sites that rank fraternities and sororities. They are inac-

curate and what sorority is best for you depends on YOU. > Ignore rumors. > Don’t rule out organizations before you meet them. > Make a decision on what you think feels right. > Learn all you can about each organization every night of recruitment. > Prepare yourself for each night. Simply reflect on your likes, activities,

hobbies, etc. so you’re prepared to talk about them. > Trust your Recruitment Counselor and your own instincts. > Befriend your Recruitment Counselor and other women in your Re-

cruitment Counselor group. > Be as friendly as you can be (without being fake).

MRABA: One year binding agreement that you may sign after preference round(s).NPC: National Panhellenic Council. The govern-ing board that oversees all 26 sororities that are within it’s jurisdiction.

PNM: Potential New Member. A woman who is not yet affiliated with an organization, but has the potential to be affiliated

BIG/LITTLE SISTER: A process that pairs a new member with an already affiliated member of the sorority. Your big is meant to be your men-tor

VALUES: Guiding principles, standards or quali-ties that guide choices and behavior

SOCIAL: A get-together with another sorority or fraternity. It is intended to bond the fraternity & sorority community.

PHILANTHROPY: Most fraternities and sorori-ties have a national philanthropy or participate in local philanthropies (not-for-profit organiza-tions) for which they spend time raising funds and volunteering.

CREED/SYMPHONY: A formal system of beliefs written out by the organization that the members of the organization vow to live by.

RITUAL: The sacred ceremonies practiced by every chapter of a Greek letter organization. Generally these are kept secret from all who are not affiliated with the organization.
