It might be an object that is used frequently—a favourite mug or a beautifully crafted tool. Or it might be a letter or keepsake that stays popped away to rediscover from time to time. Objects can be special for all kinds of reasons—some are mementos of special events, reminders of holidays, celebrations and relationships. Some are highly engineered, while others may be organic objects crafted by forces of nature. They can hold spiritual significance or they may have been obsessively tracked down for weird and wonderful collections that have become our passion. Many objects are precious because they have been given as a gift by a particular person at a particular time, and perhaps for a particular reason. Each time we handle the object we remember with gratitude the person who gave us that gift. We recall the moment of receiving it, reliving feelings of acknowledgement, delight, honour or surprise. Sometimes, if the object has come into our care through generations of family owners, it invites us to hold whole generations of forebears appreciatively in our awareness. These gifts can become symbols of hope or reminders of our strengths. They let us know that great beauty or kindness exists. They let us know that we can make it through. A precious object tucked away in a pocket can lend us comfort and encouragement during tough moments. A congratulations card received for a hard won success can remind us that our effort is seen and appreciated. A letter, an email or a note sent to a friend, a colleague or a client can be just the right gift at the right time; it can be make all the difference to someone’s day and even to their whole life. But while tangible gifts can be utterly delightful (and sometimes disastrous!), not all gifts are the kind you can place in a box or tuck under your arm. Sometimes the most meaningful gifts are not ‘things’ at all—they are intangible. These intangible gifts may come in the form of encouragement, good advice, a smile, a helping hand, or someone demonstrating a virtue like honesty, patience, forgiveness or good will. Most of us give and receive such intangible gifts on a daily basis, but how often are we aware of them? I wonder, what would happen if we all become more skilled at noticing these gifts as they pass between us? the great gift of human beings is that we have the power of empathy. Meryl Streep

StoneTherapyforSpecialSiblingsDuring September, our collection of ‘stony’ resources inspired lots of fun and creativity at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Adelaide. Art therapist, Belinda Ryan, selected our picture book, TheWrongStone, as her starting point for some ingenious workshop activities for siblings of children in the hospital’s Paediatric Palliative Care Unit.

Children identify with the stony characters immediately, and there are so many ways you can play with stones!
