They were stunned to hear that we own and manage subsidized housing projects through our housing corporation that benefit approximately 500 needy families, seniors and persons with disabilities. And though they were aware of Villa Italia, they did not know that it was a product of the Trieste Lodge, and that it served approximately 125 seniors. They also were generally unaware of the scope of our charitable contributions over the years. These encounters helped me realize that we need to reflect on our accomplishments from time to time, lest we take them for granted. The Order Sons of Italy was established in Canada in 1915 with the Sault St. Marie Lodge. Hamilton’s Order Sons of Italy Trieste Lodge was established in 1921. The initial purpose of the Order was to assist Italian immigrants in the new world. Today our mission statement requires us to: assist the needy, the ill and disabled through financial support, the provision of housing, and other support programs; To encourage the active participation of our members in the political, social and economic life of our community; to participate in programs combating discrimination, racism, and social injustice; to promote and preserve the Italian language, culture, and traditions. Dear Brothers and Sisters, on behalf of your Executive, I would like

to wish you and your families a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous 2014! Felice Anno Nuovo!

A couple of incidents during the holidays caused me to stop and reflect upon our beloved Lodge. As is often the case during the holidays, we’re meeting many

people as we attend holiday festivities or just go about our various holiday preparations. A couple of people I newly met had heard that I was involved with the Sons of Italy, and mentioned that though they had a generally positive impression of our Order and the Trieste Lodge, and “heard” that we do good things in the community, they really didn’t know much about what we do.

By no means an exhaustive list, here are some facts and milestones of our Order and the Trieste Lodge:

• The Order Sons of Italy was established in 1905 by Dr.Vincenzo Sallero in New York City’s Little Italy. Today the Order Sons of Italy is the oldest and largest organization in North America for men and women of Italian heritage with approximately 600,000 members and 3,000 lodges.

• Defeat of 1975 Green Paper thatproposed lower immigration from southern Europe. A delegation from the Trieste Lodge went to Ottawa to lobby against the Green Paper’srecommendations. The delegation’s presentation was instrumental in defeatingtheGreenPaper.

• OvertheyearstheTriesteLodgehashosted Prime Ministers, Premiers, and dignitaries of every political stripe.

• Sons of Italy Housing Corporation.In1981,theTriesteLodgeestablishedits not-for-profit HousingCorporation with the purchase of St. John Place. The objective was to provide subsidized housing to needy families, seniors and persons with disabilities. With the purchase of additional properties over the years, the Housing Corporation now owns and manages over 500 units to the benefit of many needy Hamiltonians.

• Villa Italia Retirement Residence -Sons of Italy Charitable Corporation. The result of a Trieste Lodge visioning process, and after many years of hard work and fund raising, Villa Italia opened its doors in 2003. A 125 bed retirement residence, Villa Italia is the realization of a dream to provide seniors in our community with dignified care respectful of their culture.

President’s Message cont’d from page 1

• McMaster Italian StudentAssociation. In 2011, the Trieste Lodge established a relationship with the McMaster Italian Student Association. The Trieste Lodge was instrumental in getting the GrandLodgetoamenditsby-lawstoallowstudents 25 years of age and under to become full voting members without a membership fee being required.

• Charitable Contributions. TheTrieste Lodge donates funds and resources to various charities within our community on an annual basis. Over the years, we have donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to various charities. A sampling of some of the charities we have donated to over the years are – Ronald McDonald House, Juravinski Cancer Centre, Thalassemia Foundation, Camp Trillium Children’s Cancer Camps, YMCA Strong Kids Campaign, City Kidz, Hamilton Food Share, Debra Canada, Kidney Foundation, Diabetes Association,…etc.

Our history is rich. Our accomplishments are laudable. We have much of which to rightly be proud. We have a strong foundation on which to build our future. As we move forward, we look to expand on these accomplishments, in a manner consistent with our mission statement. We are giving serious consideration to the creation of a community centre, to not only serve the Trieste Lodge, but also the greater community. Also, we are in the process of establishing a charitable foundation to encourage planned giving to the Trieste Lodge, and to facilitate our charitable efforts.

Each of us, each Trieste Lodge member, is an ambassador for the Order Sons of Italy. I ask that you keep our accomplishments in mind when speaking with individuals to whom our Order may be of interest. To that end, I remind you that the upcoming January 14th general meeting is our “Bring a Friend” meeting. Please bring a friend that you think may make a suitable member of our lodge and displays the values we all share.

Before I end my message for this month, I would like to congratulate Br. Frank Merolli, on his recent election to President of our Housing Corporation. Br. Merolli is a Past President and an ongoing active supporter of the Trieste Lodge. Congratulations Frank! We thank Past President, Br. Andrea Romano, for his many years of committed service to the Housing Corporation.

Happy New Year and I look forward to seeing you all on January 14th!!!

Trieste Lodge was busy this Christmas!

Our lodge had quite the busy schedule this Christmas. After the success of this year’s

CitizenoftheYearGalathemomentumcontinued into our many Christmas celebrations.

First, we had our annual Kid’s Christmas Party which was quite a success with many smiling, happy, and well behaved children in attendance. The children were able to take part in crafts, family photos, a visit from Santa Claus, and a lunch. A special thanks goes out to all those who attended, the volunteers helping set up, clean up, and cook, and Team DiCesare for organizing the event.

Next up was our annual poinsettia delivery to Villa Italia. Brothers Livio Dinello, Lou Filice, and Mark Sebastinutti coordinated and delivered the flowers to the Villa with a warm welcome from the residents. Thank you brothers for putting a smile on the faces of the Villa’s residents.

We wrapped up our year with the final general meeting being our Christmas dinner for members and guests. With an unprecedented turnout all members were able to enjoy a night of fraternity and Christmas spirit. Thanks goes out to Joe Mongiardi and his team for cooking a fantastic meal.

As we have done in the past, the next few meetings have special themes. January is “bring a

friend night” as a way to encourage membership and to show the community what our lodge has done throughout the past and what we aim to do in the future. February is “bring a child night”. The executive is working to bring a guest speaker that will interest and motivate

the children and grandchildren of our members. March is the annual wine tasting night where members can submit their wines to be judged and awarded the coveted Sons of Italy prize. April is our initiation meeting. We ask that you think of some potential members and let them know the benefits and privileges of being a Sons of Italy member.

It’s Sopressata Time!

With our first sopressata night coming up in June, it is time to start curing

your sopressata. Brother Lou Filice has

submitted this simple recipe to help you get started. Sopressata is an Italian dry salami. Two principal types are made, a cured dry sausage typical of

Basilicata, Apulia[1] and Calabria, and a very different uncured salami, native to Tuscany and Liguria
