Nature Center Chooses Polished ConcreteNORRIS, TENN. The Ijams Nature Center in eastern Tennessee recently recognized a need for a rejuvenation of its Visitor Center. The park decided it wanted a more

sustainable building. To fit with that idea, the park opted for polished concrete flooring from Perfect Polish.

Ijams Nature Center had been searching for the right fl oor treatment for its Visitor Center for many years one that would be aff ordable, practical, improve the

aesthetics and be easy to clean, said Paul James, executive director of Ijams Nature Center. The new [polished concrete] floors have dramatically improved the qualityand feel of the Visitor Center, particularly the exhibit hall which provides a new inspirational foundation on which to build a new series of exhibits and enhancements.

Polished concrete flooring recycles existing concrete slabs to transform them into finished surfaces. It also provides such environmental benefi ts as improved ambient

lighting, no VOCs and reduced waste. Visit www.perfectpolishonline.com for more information.

These awards recognize the exceptional innovation, perseverance and investment made by our winners, said CARE executive director Georgina Sikorski. CAREs

goals of finding market-based solutions for post-consumer carpet and diverting carpet from landfills cannot be achieved without the kind of vision and commitment

exemplified by the individuals and companies we honor this year.

The EPA/CARE award co-winners were Shaw Industries Evergreen Nylon Recycling facility and the Los Angeles Fiber Company and its president Ronald Greitzer. To make the showrooms entry lobby a featurespace, we used wood reclaimed from the timberstructures of barns in Indiana. In addition to beinga local and 100 percent recycled material, thisend-grain flooring is extremely durable andlong-lasting, while providing a rich, warm finish.

    A Good First Year

NINE MANUFACTURERS HAVE ALREADY ACHIEVED CERTIFICATIONUNDER NSF 140.

    By Jeff Carrier

In its first full year of existence, the ANSI/NSF 140 2007 carpet sustainability standard earned positive accolades and has filled a need in

the existing market.NSF 140 is the comprehensive environmental standard developed to help the design community identify carpet with reduced

environmental impact. NSF 140-2007 is the first multi-attribute ANSI-approved standard developed to identify environmentallypreferred building materials. The standard evaluates products and manufacturers based on performance in five areas: public health andthe environment, energy and energy efficiency, bio-based and recycled content, manufacturing, and reclamation and end-of-lifemanagement.

Nine manufacturers have already achieved certification under NSF 140, representing a total of 28 approved product platforms.Beaulieu Commercial, Bentley Prince Street, Interface-FLOR, Mannington Mills, Masland Contract, Milliken and Company, Shaw

Industries, Tandus and J+J|Invision each submitted detailed documentation and underwent exhaustive scrutiny in order to achievecertification for their products.

Each product platform represents a group of styles that share one or more similar characteristics, such as a backing or fi nishingsystem, and each approved platform can represent hundreds of carpet styles. To make it easier for specifiers to find NSF 140 approved

products, the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) has listed them in a centralized registry on the CRI web- site, carpet-rug.org.(https://www.carpet-rug. org/carpet-and-rug-industry/sustainability/ sustainable-carpet/sustainable-carpet-list.cfm).

The NSF 140 Joint Committee has approveda detailed guidebook, http://standards.nsf.org/apps/group_public/download.php/4273/NSF%20140-2007%20Guidance%20Manu-al%200209.pdf. available online for manufacturers who are interested in starting the certifi cation process.

This summer, the NSF Joint Committee is conducting the first annual review of the NSF 140 standard to examine compliance and

consider proposed changes and additions to the standard. Copies of the current approved NSF 140 standard are available from theNSF I nternational Bookstore. http://www.nsf.org/ info/carpet.

In an exciting development for broadening the acceptance and clout behind NSF 140, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) islooking closely at including NSF 140 in its recommendations for federal comprehensive procurement guidelines (CPGs) for nyloncarpet. If the EPA does add NSF 140-certified products to CPG suggested listings, it will mark the first time the agency has considered aproducts entire environmental profile and overall impact on sustainability and the environment in their decision. Past recommendationswere based on recycled content alone. An answer is expected in the next few months.

    Closing the Loop

    CARPET RECLAMATION CONSIDERATIONS.

    By Kim Matsoukas, LEED AP

The amount of recycled content, while undoubtedly important, should not be the first and certainly not the only green criteria whenchoosing carpet. An important step should be considered before even thinking about new floor covering: Whats going to happen to the

    existing carpet?

Good for Our Planet; Good for Business

Theres no questioning the facts when it comes to the environmental benefits of carpet reclamation. Carpet takes more than 50 years to

begin to decompose in a landfill. One square yard of carpet weighs as much as the amount of trash the average American throws awayeach day. Carpet accounts for 2 to 3 percent of all landfill volume. For every ton of carpet recycled, two tons of CO

    2are prevented from

    entering the atmosphere.

Reclaiming carpet can help reduce a facilitys environmental footprint in a number of ways. Ultimately, carpet manufacturers willneed to make carpet back into carpet. In order to break our dependency on petroleum-based raw materials, manufacturers need a

steady supply of post-consumer recycled carpet to add recycled content to their products. More recycling of carpet at the end of its lifemeans higher recycled content in future products. This means its everyones responsibility to help close the loop.

Its also important to understand that carpet reclamation makes equally good business sense. First, depending on the region, it isactually less expensive to recycle carpet than to send

it to a landfill. Even if the fees arent itemized in the demolition contract, landfill costs are expensive and rising rapidly across thecountry. Depending on the type of carpet being recycled, reclamation can be free. In the not-too-distant future, it is likely that sendingcarpet to landfi lls will no longer be an option, with costly fines for those who do.

Carpet reclamation may contribute up to two points for LEED-CI or LEED-EB certifi cation in the construction waste managementcategory. From an economic perspective, LEED certifi cation has proven to reduce operating costs, enhance asset value and profi ts,improve employee productivity and satisfaction, and optimize life-cycle performance. A 2006U.S. Green Building Council study found that retrofitting buildings to achieve LEED certification saved an average of 90 cents persquare foot in energy and other costs annually.

Its Easier Than You Might Think

There was a time when carpet reclamation was diffi cult, time consuming and expensive. No more. The carpet industry has been anaggressive proponent of keeping its product out of landfills and now provides numerous solutions for managing waste carpet whether

turning old carpet into new carpet, reusing it in another setting, refurbishing, or recycling fiber into other plastic products. Last year, forexample, Bentley Prince Street alone recycled approximately 2.2 million pounds of carpet about the weight of six Boeing 747s through its ReEntry carpet reclamation program.

The basic rule of carpet reclamation is that the dealer or contractor whos handling the projects demolition is responsible for itsdisposal. Dealers may be willing to absorb part of the cost of reclamation if there is one. Reclamation costs are typically determinedby the carpet material, the amount of carpet, the logistics and the location.

Carpet manufacturers can help customers find the best solution for either reusing or recycling carpet. For example, Bentley PrinceStreet coordinates onsite carpet disposal and, once the bins are filled, it manages the complete reclamation process.

Each reclamation program has diff erent specifications for carpet disposal preparation. While every program varies, generallycarpet tile should be palletized and shrink-wrapped; broadloom should be rolled or cut into strips. The carpet also must be dry, cleanand separated from other materials.

    Sustainable Results

Bill McGrath of New Yorks PlazaConstruction Corporation was theproject director on Equinoxoverseeing the 18 weeks ofconstruction for the generalcontractor. Hes understandablyproud of the fi nal result.

The floor turned outbeautifully, McGrath said. It hasa nice overall look and feel to it,

something we can all be proud of.Its all part of the bigger, greenerpicture.

Plaza Construction itself has longbeen an industry leader on the green

front. From start to finish, Equinoxwas a model of sustainable design, built with an eye toward energy andwater savings, and a healthy overall

    environment.Equinox comes equipped with

low-energy, high-output lights outfitted with smart panels and controls. The heat pumps, which help controlthe temperature, arehydrochlorofluorocarbon-free.Flow-reducing controls decreasewater usage by 80 percent comparedwith similar facilities.

Air quality is addressed in a numberof ways. Wood products are form-aldehyde free, and all paints, sealants

and chemicals emit no toxic fumes.Carbon monoxide detectors and filtersalso contribute to the overall health ofthe club.

One of Equinoxs most strikingfeatures is its Living Wall of greenvegetation that converts carbondioxide into oxygen and acts as anatural sound barrier.

Every little bit helps according to Equinoxs Abdalla. You cant do things the old

way, Abdalla said. This is thefuture. Everybody better get onboard. This is how things are goingto be done from now on. And, as theysay, if youre not part of the solution, youre part of the problem.

    Research Affi rms Hardwood Flooring

The Consortium for Research on Renewable Industrial Materials (CORRIM) conducted a gate-to-gate, life-cycle inventory of solid

strip hardwood fl ooring manufactured in the eastern United States. The information obtained from the study was used to compare solid

strip hardwood flooring with popular alternatives: vinyl composition tile, linoleum, nylon carpet tile, and wool carpet tile1

.The CORRIM study concluded: Less total energy is required to produce a hardwood fl oor than other flooring; hardwood fl oors have

no emissions for methane, nitrogen oxides and other particulate matter and minimal emissions for carbon dioxide; and hardwood

flooring is carbon neutral. With independent research affirming hardwoods as being carbon negative and rating systems expanding their certifi cation of moreand more forests, hardwoods are at the forefront of sustainable flooring products and materials. As the design-build industry workstoward the goal of carbon-neutral buildings by 2030, the abundant and naturally self-renewing supply of North American hardwoodslook to play a prominent role in making that goal a reality.

Founded in 1993, the Harwood Council is a coalition of hardwood lumber and product associations along with companies and

individuals interested in promoting the use of North American hardwood. For more information on the Hardwood Council,
