Temperature monitoring: keep safe, keep moving!

Conveyor belts and elevators enable the fast transportation of different materials over long distances. They are vital for transporting loose or bulk materials around plants and between processes.

Combustible dusts and the risk of ignitionWhen working with combustible dusts such as coal, sugar, starch, wood, cork or grain, there is the ever-present danger that these components could form explosive dust clouds. It is therefore essential to guard against every potential source of ignition within your process.

Endress+Hauser’s conveyor belt alignment system ensures accurate operation of conveyor belts. It consists of two basic elements:• Belt alignment detector assembly • Bearing temperature probes

Belt alignment detector assemblyIf conveyor belts or elevators deviate from their lateral position, friction between the belt and the casing wall can cause an ignition spark.

The solution Brass rub blocks with a built-in Pt100 temperature probe mounted on a stainless steel plate for optimal process connection.

How it works:• Rub blocks are mounted in close proximity to conveyor belts. Lateral movement of the belt will cause friction with the brass block which is converted into heat. • Control units (i.e. PLCs) monitor the temperature of the rub blocks and can be configured with critical temperature set-points to trigger alarming units if the temperatures increase.• Spring-loaded temperature probes guarantee optimal thermal contact to the heat-conductive brass element during installation and after repositioning.

The close proximity of the rub blocks to the conveyor belt allows detection of conveyor alignment problems. This information can be used to take preventive action before a potentially hazardous situation occurs.

Bearing temperature probesPermanent operation of conveyor belts and elevators demands precise maintenance of bearings. Insufficient lubrication can result in unintended heat generation.

The solutionA stainless steel body incorporates a removable Pt100 temperature insert and a grease nipple. Probes are designed to replace the existing grease nipple on the bearing housing.

How it works: • Probes are threaded directly into the bearing housing – no additional hole is required.• The integrated grease nipple enables the service team to lubricate machinery without removing the temperature probes.• Spring-loaded Pt100 inserts guarantee a fast thermal response should the temperature within the bearing housing increase.

The temperature of bearings is a safety factor for machinery. A temperature increase indicates that lubrication or maintenance is required.

Our bespoke ready-to-use solution is designed to meet your requirements:• Use of spring-loaded, high quality Endress+Hauser 3-wire Pt100 temperature probes (ref. to EN60751) for accurate and reliable temperature measurement• Fast thermal response time due to brass rub blocks and spring-loaded sensor design• Embedded sensor: no direct contact with moving elements• Integrated test port allows functional testing and temperature simulation without sensor removal• IECEx/ATEX approval: suitable for safe and/or hazardous area applications• Chamfered edges ensure that the belts are protected from damage • Commonly-used industry standards (4-20mA HART and PROFIBUS) for highly integrated systems and standardised communication Endress+Hauser iTEMP temperature

head transmitters.

Systems periphery and panel enclosures Endress+Hauser offers a complete bespoke panel design and manufacturing service to complement our instrument and solutions portfolio. Delivered by our engineered solutions team, design, build and testing follows our audited procedures and standards to ensure we meet your exact requirements.

If temperature transmitters are used to display the process temperatures of conveyor rub blocks, the transmitters should be mounted in a separate junction box. For optimal process connection, several GRP junction boxes for conveyor alignment systems are available:• 4-20mA HART• PROFIBUS PA• Terminal boxes for direct wiring of the field instruments

An intelligent approach Our design engineers take an intelligent approach to your panel design in order to ensure that it meets your exact specifications.

We’ll consider the final location of the panel to ensure that the most suitable housing materials are used and will recommend solutions to deal with problems that are particular to your site. We have the capability to deliver panels for hazardous areas and to incorporate safety controls for critical systems.
