The most notable advance in astrologicaltechniques for centuries has been thedevelopment of Harmonics into AgeHarmonics. Most experienced astrologers arefamiliar with the general concept of Harmonics,as expounded by John Addey. They have beenin use from ancient times. But only the advanceguard of astrologers have grasped thesignificance, uniqueness and great utility of AgeHarmonics.

What is different about AGE Harmonics? It isprincipally the concept of using the age of aperson, an organization, a nation, a city, anenterprise, etc, to elicit information concerningthe future of that person, nation, enterprise, etc.This is probably its most important role but by nomeans the only one. Age Harmonics have aunique value in several areas of Astrology wherethey shed light on questions that have perplexedpractitioners from time immemorial.

They are outstanding in their ability to predict withcertainty the outcome of a political battle, anElection, and contests of various kinds. Notableexamples are the Election of George Bush to thePresidency in 1989 and of George W. Bush (re-election) in 2004.

Another application of great practical utility is indistinguishing with certainty which of twopossible birth times is correct. It often happensa person cannot remember whether the mothersaid, for instance, the birth was a quarter to sevenor a quarter past seven, five minutes beforetwelve or five minutes after twelve, etc. In thesecases, setting up an Age Harmonic for someimportant events in the person’s life leaves nodoubt as to which is the correct time.

In Rectification of Natal Charts after a time isestablished within about a quarter of an hour, AgeHarmonics enable a degree of fine tuning notapproached by any other method.

or other issues. Youcan see theinteraction betweentwo people, theirattitude to oneanother or whatpreoccupies them at any point in time, by settingup their Age Harmonic Charts for the same dateand putting them in a BiWheel, with one outsidethe other. The inter-chart conjunctions with anorb of one degree or less are the most importantfactors, describing their relationship to oneanother. Interchange the chart positions for adifferent view and for further insights throughthe different House positions. The computerProgram Solar Fire Deluxe from EsotericTechnologies is ideal for this purpose andfacilitates the whole operation.

If you do this same comparison with the usualSecondary Progressions to the same date foreach Chart you will be surprised how inferior itis to the Harmonics BiWheel.

A further application of Age Harmonics is thedelineation of defining moments in the lives ofpeople. These are moments of greatsignificance to the individual when some strokeof destiny changes the person’s life, maybeorienting it in a very different direction for someyears. Because of its richness in Aspects, theChart for the Harmonic Age at the time can givea better indication of the future life than can theProgressed or Solar Return Chart.

Age Harmonic Charts are rich in Aspectsbecause they are not restricted by the normalrelationships of planets. Venus and Mercury, forexample, can be in any Aspect to the Sun –opposition or square, for instance – not limitedto 45° or less.

Among the great advantages of using AgeHarmonics is that they obviate questions suchas should Return Charts be calculated for theplace of birth or the place of residence.Harmonic Charts are related to the place of birth

only. You can experiment with different locationsbut my researches have led me back to the birthplace.

It is essential to have an accurate birth time toget the best results from Age Harmonics. Thelarge multiplication factors involved in thecalculations magnify the differences in chartscaused by a small time error. On the other hand,this is also a strength as it enables very fineadjustment to inaccurate birth times, asmentioned above. If the birth time you happen tobe working with is not too far out of exactitudeyou can still derive much good information froma harmonic chart by examining the Aspects anddisregarding the Houses. This, however, shouldreally be a stimulus to rectify the chart.

Interpreting Age Harmonic ChartsInterpret the Age Harmonic just as you would aSolar Return Figure. Firstly, read the Chart onits own (without the Radix). Alone, this willusually give the significant matters. When youcombine it with the Radix you find confirmationor extension of what is indicated in theHarmonic Figure.

Occasionally when you surround the HarmonicChart with the Natal Figure some important NatalAspect (hard or soft) is moved into a highlysignificant position in the Harmonic Chart. Forexample, the planets in a natal square could bemoved into the Angular position of Asc and MC.This then becomes a powerful indicator alongwith what else appears in the Harmonic Chart.

Look for CLOSE ASPECTS (within 1°). Theconjunctions are the most important but anyAspect, even a semi-sextile, is significant if lessthan 1°. Give these close Aspects priority, buthaving found and interpreted them see what isadded by the other Aspects up to about 5° orb.

Closeness to a Cusp increases the potency ofthe planet involved – principally the Angles butthe intermediate Cusps also. Harmonic Chartsare usually printed out with equal Cusps, so everyplanet on a Cusp bears some angular relation tothe Ascendant and Midheaven. To my surprise,and having treated them with indifference formany years, I have found Porphyry Cusps to bethe best in general work inasmuch as they

indicate the most powerful position for a planetto occupy in a House.

It is largely a question of PRIORITIES – whatastrological factor is more important andsignificant than another. This comes with doinglots of Age Harmonic Charts for events that youknow in people’s lives. It’s serious rational workthat counts – not lucky guesses. Of course forbest results you need an accurate birth time.

Calculation of HarmonicsHarmonics are tedious (but not hard) to calculateby hand (with an electronic calculator). If the birthtime is out, but not too far out, the inter-planetaryaspects will be O.K. but the House positions maybe wrong and in particular, planets will beremoved from propinquity to Cusps, which arethe strongest positions in the Houses. A numberof computer programs calculate the Age-Harmonic Chart. Preeminent among them is theProgram in Solar Fire designed by EsotericTechnologies. It is comprehensive, includingvaluable extensions such as giving an Harmonic-Age Chart for any day of the year and being ableto give a chronological list of PROGRESSEDHarmonic positions as in SecondaryProgressions.

Those using a version of Solar Fire prior to V6and dependent on my Table of MonthlyHarmonics, should be careful to select the correctmonth. The correct month is the one that includesthe date of the event. If the date of the event is1st March and the birthday is the 23rd of July it isno good going to March in the July column of theTable for Monthly Harmonics. That would referto the month 23 March to 23 April, whereas whatis wanted is 23 February to 23 March, so in thiscase you look down the column for the fractionopposite February.

Each individual factor in the Birth Chart has tobe multiplied by the Age Harmonic. Usually, thisis done by a Program in the computer. (SolarFire does it beautifully). The Ascendant is foundby multiplying the Natal Asc by the Age Harmonic,and all the Cusps have the same degrees andminutes (Equal House). The Natal MC multiplied

by the Age Harmonic gives the “Floating MC”which can be anywhere in the Harmonic Chart.It is more important and significant than the 10th

Cusp.

Genesis of Age HarmonicsMy attention was first directed to this revolutionaryway of applying harmonics to a horoscope by

artist-astrologer Ross Harvey of NSW, Australia,in 1983. Following his lead I made someinvestigations of my own and soon realized thatthis was indeed a momentous discovery, beyondany other advances of the last two centuries.From 1983 onwards I made it my business topromote this new technique by articles anddemonstrations in Astrologers’ Forum of which Iwas Founder and Editor.
